On Aruba’s new APs (not instant on) they can be configured as “Instant APs” allowing one AP to act as a controller locally. It has more features and requires no licensing.

Being from non IT background, I am quite surprised at how much I am able to understand (albeit is more about your clear communication than about my capability to grasp). I have used these things after I watched your videos 1. Bitwarden, 2. XCP-NG and 3. Zero-tier. Thank you so much Tom! ♥️ Edit:spelling

Having a startup config and running config like cisco hardware has is handy if you are configuring a router remotely and you have it set to reboot in 30 or so minutes. If you lock yourself out it will reboot and restore the configuration back.

I'm a tac engineer for Aruba, and If you desire a local management IAP's can be a low cost option. The "controller" aspect is built into them so you can link multiple IAP's together There can be some good deals for used iap's, and since they don't need license it can be cost effective.

Great review, as always! I wonder, the Ethernet connector on the AP is oddly placed where the cable will stick right up to the ceiling, especially if you using that nifty tile bracket?

It would be good to compare these to Aruba Instant AP's which are some of the same hardware but the Instant AP's have a virtual software controller and one of the AP's acts as a master to the other AP's on the network. The WAP's then form a cluster and if the master is lost a selection process is run on the WAP's to select a new master. Once you out grow this mode you can add a local controller. Multiple controllers can by managed by a local isntall of Aruba Air Wave or via a cloud solution. Another good thing about the Instand AP's & Aruba switches is the lifetime free software upgrades and lifetime NBD warranties. That warranty was great when I worked for a MSP where we supplied HP Procurve switches which are now the Aruba switches.

Finally some Aruba content from you guys! We've been using HPE-Aruba gear for years and never had any particular problems with them....switches feature-wise are miles ahead Unifi at a similar price! This said I've used instant APs a bit and I'm not impressed... EoL is usually 5-6 years with Aruba, I truly hope they'll be supported for a lot more. Oh and AP11 SUCKS big time, even an AC-Lite is much better 😄

There are comments in the video, around 17m and towards the end, that the DPI is not granular enough. The Application tile was not reviewed in here, and under the Applications tab under that tile there are more granular information, for example the services that were used as part of the streaming category, plus usage per networks and more.

You said you don’t like captive portals. What do you use for public Wi-Fi? I’m trying to decide if I want to use a captive portal for free outdoor wireless, but I’m concerned about the adoption rate if a WPA2 password is used. I am considering using either a captive portal with a click through terms of use as least and potentially a timeout on the connection for each device. I’ll be using Unifi AP’s, I’ve deployed several of them (100 at one place and small 4-12 at small businesses). All of them have been a controlled environment, no truly public wireless access.

@@joshuabrixey4679 your experience maybe helping you more than you think. ive tried the access points and wouldnt try it again. i wouldnt even think of deploying in a mission critical situation. maybe in a restaurant where the manager can go in the back and power cycle the devices when they start acting up. but for situations where down-time is not acceptable. they are way too risky. ive even heard the same about the switches. my first unifi ap device died after 15mins of use, and the second still wasnt super stable. they are also missing some adaptive radio features and IDS features which i really require. PFsense is rock solid and has good feature-set. i did use it and have no complaints. but most people who try OPNsense GUI wouldnt go back to PFsense. and there are also some situations where PFsense/OPNsense is not the best choice. you would never think any other routers or firewalls companies exist watching this channel.
