The sharing of rooms was pretty hilarious, the designer of the ship said it's really fit for a crew the size of 4,000 plus, and Rodenberry and the Producers just reduced it to 1,000 because of a lack of extras. There is no way anyone would have to share a room if you look at the blueprints and factor in some family members already living together.

I know when the script called for it, you got a nice little okuda layout, but any other time, I always tried to figure out how on earth anybody got any work done on any of them? Keyboard input was always a bit of a mystery to me with these shows. When people did input data, I never saw any such keyboard layouts to enter the data with. Just random buttons for data entry?

Well we talk about "Guests" in the sense of diplomats which can be accommodated in luxury. I mean their suites are probably equal to the Senior staff or even the captains Quarters. The Evacuation limit was at 15000 but this is with all luxury over board and only for limited amounts of time. The "reasonably luxurious with just double stacked still relatively big Quarters and still good live style to our modern standards" amount of crew probably is somewhere up to one third of the Evacuation Limit i guess. So 5000 Persons.

Probably the best "all-around" ship design the Federation had. Sure, it was later surpassed in specific roles by other classes (Defiant-class for combat, Sovereign-class for long-range "show-the-flag" missions and diplomacy, Intrepid-class and Nova-class for exploration), but a jack of all trades, and master of many.
@PaiSAMSEN
@PaiSAMSEN 3 жыл бұрын
My head canon is that the loss of their status as the top-of-the-line ship of the Federation has been a boon for the Galaxy-class after the Dominion war. Free from the curse of being the flagships, the ship is now free to embark on what the original designer has envisioned : a long-range exploratory vessel that can operate independently in uncharted territory for years. The new post-war batches of Galaxy-class, unofficially designated by some as "Galaxy-II" to denote upgrade derive from advancement on ships like Sovereign-class, form the core of the revitalized exploratory branch of Starfleet, which were massively curtailed following the Wolf-359 disaster and the following Dominion war, and launch the Federation into a new golden age of exploration.

The Yamato had to go to have that "is it a design flaw" element in Contagion (even though I think they could have done without that) and the Odyssey was destroyed to show just how damn serious the Dominion was. @@thegreenmanofnorwich I would agree. Rather wistful excuse to get rid of the 6ft model that really didn't do much for the plot. That little bird of prey wouldn't have been a match in a strait fight. But as powerful as the Galaxy Class is, it still doesn't have any armor at all so if you take the shields out of the equation, its gets a lot easier to do damage to federation ships. The Constitution Refit will always be my pick for the most beautiful starship design, but the Galaxy Class is the one that comes the closest to representing the Federation's ideals and embodying Gene Roddenberry's vision of a future worth living in. The problem is that it’s very, _very_ hard to write an idealistic dream of humanity’s future without making lots of mistakes, especially if your own understanding of things like human psychology or sociology is less than college level. The most common is the arrogant assumption “in the future everything will be perfect, because everyone will think exactly like me!” Idealism can often come across as sanctimoniousness, arrogance, or childish naïveté if the writer lacks the skills necessary to portray those ideals properly. It gets worse when a writer makes a serious error that isn’t caught before the final version, or fails to truly consider the implications or ramifications of something. That’s how you get a cutting edge of technology heavy cruiser meant to redefine every aspect of what a Federation starship is… being designed not by an engineer, but by a _theoretical physicist._

One of the best and proper uses we have seen is with the war planet, when Picard got stuck on the surface and a cloaked enemy appeared in orbit and started pounding on the ship. Jourdi was in command at the time and he broke orbit, separated, came back in the star drive section to take care of the threat and recover the away team. Also has one of my fav line, "Mr Laforge, when I left this ship it was in one piece. I'd like you to return it to me in that condition." And then he goes and sits off to the side of the battle bridge leaving Jordi in command.

The first time I saw the Galaxy Class Starship was when Star Trek The Next Generation aired on t.v. and when I first saw that ship and it was called the Enterprise I was in complete awe that Starfleet could build such a massive starship when compared to the old Constitution Class it would probably look puny compared to the Galaxy Class and I was even surprised that these ships had families on board and it had a Klingon for a security chief and a blind man for a chief engineer and an android for a second officer just shows how far Starfleet has come since the days of the legendary Starfleet officers of the forementioned Constitution Class like the legendary Captain James T. Kirk.

This why other races in Star Trek think the Federation are such a big threat. Just imagine what they think when they encounter the Enterprise. Pirate crew: Captain, I am detecting a Federation vessel. It appears to be a luxury cruise liner with several recreational areas, large comfortable quarters, and what appears to be a school for children. Pirate captain: Excellent, easy prey. No doubt there are many valuable hostages onboard. And I'm sure a vessel of that size will have a large quantity of dilithium. Charge weapons and prepare boarding parties. Pirate crew: Sir! I'm also detecting over 200 high yield photon torpedoes, dozens of phaser arrays, dreadnought class shield generators, and the warp engines are more powerful than any we have ever encountered before! Pirate captain: What? How can anyone equip such heavy armaments on a luxury vessel? I would hate see what their warships are like. We better tell all our ships to avoid Federation ships in the future. They're clearly too powerful to be reckoned with and we cannot afford to incur their wrath.

I think that Federation scared their neighbors and allies during the Dominion War. The Federation started the war with the Dominion by attacking Cardassia rather than tolerate multiple provocations. It was a cold calculation that they would not have a chance if they let the Dominion continue their build up. Starfleet actually waged war to win and did not bother offer an end of hostilities.

Thank you, finally One who knows what he talks about, pointing out the real "awesomeness" of the Galaxy Class. To add some theory crafting: When turning a Galaxy Class into a Warship, her best feature is the ability to sport an insane amount of Reactor Power. It would be enough to up the 12 to 24 Phasor Arrays to each side, allowing 48-Phaser-Volleys that may even get upped by Offensive maneuvering. Also, you can go up to 50+Volleys in regards of Torpedoes. But, the main Advantage here from the possible 2 Main Cores and additional 4 Supplemental Reactors is not only to sport thoose "common" additional Weapons. In combination with the now discarded unneeded Scientific Parts (I do not talk about Astrometry or such - they are very much needed. I talk about Biolabs aside Medical and such) and the leftout Crew Accomodations we can add more secondary Systems - the "Redundant Ones" - to be able to compansade System Failures (more Backup-EPS, dammit!). Also, we can now add more Energy to structural Integrity, upping the sturdyness of the Ship a lot. The Cargo Bays get repositioned as Crewquarters get relocated as well, leaving space in the Saucer and Saucers now independent Reactor and its 2 supplemental Cores to Power the Weponry we add in the "Cargo Bay". We call this System the Kira/Dukat-Phalanx: 4 Planetary Defense Cannons, 2 of them to be able to be discharged the same Time, 60 Minutes recharge Time or less when you burn through the Conductors and Capacitors. Also, the Hangar gets now used for Runabouts with Torpedo Attachment or dome Fighters as used in Planetary defense. You have a Bomber or a Fighter Squad at hand. And that is just the "Legal Part". If we throw Khitomer out the Window and do not care about the Romulan Treaty, it gets really scary. Because, the "leftover Scientific Stations" allow for real Atrocities to be used. Lets just take a look at the metaphasic Shields that are considerably stronger than normal ones. When you project our a further "Shield" that just resonates to passing Energy (and Matter), you can analyze its Frequency and thus auto-alter the Shields to adapt optimal to it - Borg-Shields Plus. Also, we can fit in the Transphasic System from the Pegasus Experimental Cloak to make us "immaterial" for Attacks. That System was - as seen, not so big and can be deployed in a Torpedo, now bypassing all defense Systems and materializing and exploding inside a Ship - rendering the "Shields get worn down and Torpedoes go for the Kill"-Tactic obsolete. And with that, we are at the real ugly Part - Subspace Weaponry. Ever seen TNGs "Remember me"? Weponizing Runabouts is really evil - stripping anemy Ships from all life but leaving the Ship unharmed. Piracy 101 and wet Dream I gotta say. And here, it gets funny - The new and bigger Weapon. Empty Runabout with Warp Core and Transphasic Cloak. Fly in, Materialize and make a Warp Jump from inside the enemy Ship. That Way, you create an instable Black Hole inside the Enemy Ship that feeds from it and then collapses in a microscopic "Big Bang" - which is considerably Powerful even though "Microsopic" Also, Tractor Probes are some evil shit. Link 2 of them opposing and have them lock on 2 different Ships - like "chaining them together". Puts considrable Stress on the Hull. Multiple Probes can hinder a Ships maneuverability sigificantly. And also you can use your Deflector Dish to project one of the "additional Warp Fields" you can now pregenerate (risky, but powerful). What do you think happens when you disturb an existing Field in use with another one you project upon them? Right, Singularity Core Collapse. Projecting this via the Tractor Drones and you literally "lock down" the enemy until he destroyed the Probes - and thoose Seconds are all you need with a Ship as the above. So, by all means - Federation did not go out "Full War" on the Borg. When you do what they did to a Runabout by attaching an oversized Cruiser Reacor, a fuckton of Weapons and defensice Abilitys of a heavy Cruiser plus a cloak.... yes, the Defiant was a Runabout. Look at the front, they just attached a "Saucer" on the Bacl and popped the Engine directly on to the Sides.... well, you get the Idea doing this to a Galaxy Class. So no, the Sovereign Class is not a "Warship". It is something the others Think of as a Warship compared to their Warships. But, it isn't. If Federation would go out full Warships, the Borg would request assimilation by the Federation politely.

Starfleet is a goddamn life commitment, so splurging on some comfortability makes sense. You should do the NX-01 class one day in this type of video. It isn't as iconic as the Galaxy-class but it is the father of all Starfleet starships and it was granted the first mass exploration mission of humankind. In Star Trek lore, the NX-01 was the greatest human machine in the early years of human extrasolar age. Plus, Star Trek Enterprise is very underrated to me, this show deserves more love because many misunderstood it.
