Starfleet probably is one of the most unique factions in all scifi. Few seem to be able to pull off their success while maintaining such ideals. But its probably because of another policy, they tend to speak softly while carrying a big stick. And if that stick isn't enough, they make a bigger one (sometimes on the fly).

Sterfleet is able to pull off their success because the script decides so. Sure, Star Trek is a monumental and legendary part of sci-fi, but not very realistic. Realism of course doesn't determine popularity, if it did, The Expanse or Mass Effect would be more popular.
@jhmcd24 жыл бұрын
@@ArghastOfTheAlliance I would be willing to argue that Star Trek is one of the more realistic scifi shows out there. Now, I've never seen expanse nor played Mass Effect, my knowledge is limited to to the occasional web episode on them. However, the second version of Battlestar is often cited as being realistic, and I don't think so. But just because starfleet isn't always against the ropes, or the people aren't always at each other's throats doesn't mean its not realistic.

Carrot OR the stick, you are thinking of the pen is mightier than the sword... The phrase you are referring to describes a situation in which there is a benefit "carrot" and a punishment "stick", the two are meant to work together to increase the difference between cooperation and resistance ie one is nothing without the other so comparing the two in efficacy is literally meaningless. Starfleet believes in holding up its ideals and only punishes those who attempt to threaten it directly, ie the pen being mightier than the sword in the long term.

The Andorian Imperial Guard and Vulcan High Command or Vulcan Expeditionary group were not folded into Starfleet as both members kept those services. It is just that among the military and exploritary services of the founding members Starfleet was federalized. The Bajoran Militia was to be absorbed to Starfleet if Bajor joined the Federation. In a future timeline in the 26th century the Klingons were part of the Federation had their own ships participate during the Battle of Procyon V against the Sphere Builders. So it seems to be on a case to case basis.

the founder members did not always contribute the same to the Federation. Vulcans for instance did not join Starfleet itself during the TOS era, with Spock being one of the rare exceptions during his time, followed by Saavik and Valeris. In fact the first time two Vulcans were seen serving on the same ship was all the way in Voyager-not counting the all-Vulcan crew Sisko hosted at DS9. No Vulcan is recorded as being President of the Federation, either. One would think each member world still had its government, and thus the Imperial Guard and the High Command would be still around, and Vulcan/Andorian ships would still be a thing.
@reddyredwolf39312 жыл бұрын
@@SantomPh The Intrepid during TOS was an all Vulcan crew though I suspect they are graduates of the Vulcan Science Academy. To this day I remain convinced that Starfleet's greatest achievement was holding the line in the Dominion War when a significant portion (if not a majority) of their fleet was made up of outdated science vessels and, later on, the same science vessels hastily retrofitted to current standards and with as many weapons as they could power taped on. I know they had a lot of help, I know they had some far more combat worthy vessels and I know they ultimately would have lost anyway had it not been for other stuff which happened over the course of DS9, but when you consider what they had to work with at the start of the war, the fact that it was anything other than the Dominion cutting a swathe through Federation territory whenever they felt like it was damn impressive.

Nearly too late did Starfleet, and the Federation as a whole, realize a core tenant of idealism: in order to make your ideals a reality, you need power to back them up and help enforce their creation/stability. An idealist without power is an inventor without tools: useless and impotent. Now that Starfleet has beefed up their weapons and shields, they actually stand a chance of creating lasting peace in the galaxy...as long as the Borg don't muck everything up again.

I got a beef with families boarding with starships. According to non-canon Gods of Night, after the loss of ENTERPRISE-D at the battle of Veridian III, Starfleet decided not to populate starships on not only vessels smaller than Explorer class, but all of them. There was just too much at stake. This makes sense in a familial manner. Take the Second World War Navy. The five Sullivan brothers all served onboard light cruiser USS JUNEAU in the Pacific, but all were lost when it was torpedoed. The military adopted family survivor policies that mandated pulling lone family members from front line duty in the case of all the other family members being lost or killed. Starfleet readopted this policy after ENTERPRISE-D was lost.

There is a darker reason for _multi species crews_ - it's to encourage humans to live up to their ideals and not, as is often the case amongst humanity, *sink down to the ethics of the lowest common denominator.* Humans don't like to let the side down in front of witnesses, so having "outsiders" shames them into compliance with their professed beliefs, not their hidden urges. Otherwise the subtle unconscious signals and body language amongst humans would allow group think and the leadership of the most ruthless, leading to the exposure of the brutal xenophobic tribalism that still exist as potential in most humans. This can be seen in the behaviour of the crew of the Equinox, which only had human survivors and performed experiments on other sentients to use them as fuel. Still this may not be isolated to just the human psyche, after all the most honourable Klingon who lived up to the ideals of his species was raised by and worked with humans and other species. *It's only under the gaze of others that humanity is really humane.*

@andrewjones24534 жыл бұрын
@@popitrekker1543 But they wouldn't. The humans of 40k, when faced with a dangerous and diverse universe chose a doctrine of supremacy and purity. The humans of Star Trek chose cooperation and IDIC. Given the differences in the natures of the worlds, I'm not sure any comparison is practical. Star Trek is pretty much based on the idea that humanity has reached a point where. given the opportunity, it would make that choice, with others, and among itself.
@gengoosekhan4 жыл бұрын
A possible (not canon) reason that is 'darker' would be a matter of loyalty. If you kept the crews of ships homogeneous, they would be less loyal to the Federation as a whole as opposed to their own Species homeworld. An all-Andorian ship would be more loyal to Andor than the Federation, for example.
