I saw a guy on live chat asking how the Muslims prayed if they don't know where Mekka is, if you don't know where the Kaba is (and if you don't have the means to determine it's place) you can just select a direction and pray while facing it.
@dashiellgillingham45794 жыл бұрын
Islam does something beautiful when it's practitioners are beyond Earth. If you can't reasonably pray towards the Kaaba itself, you prey towards the planet. If you can't find the Earth, or it would be impractical to keep pointed towards it for the entire duration of the ceremony, prayer is directed towards Sol itself. If even that cannot be done, than to close one's eyes, and imagine oneself praying toward the Kaaba, is enough. If I ever write a sci-fi story, I'm going to incorporate that. It's such a powerful and genuine thing- It's just beautiful.
@jesseberg32714 жыл бұрын
I know this leads down controversial roads, but religions aren't static. Cut off from Earth, unsure if it even exists anymore (even without the secret messages only the leaders have) Antaren Muslims might have founded a new Mecca, as a center for prayer and pilgrimage. Likewise, with so many predominantly Catholic nations represented, there could be an Antaren Vatican with its own Pope.

Ngl, the Antares Confederacy is some of my favourite worldbuilding so far. I loved the GTU, but this was some really interesting backstory that tells a tale unlike most others but also full of hope. Stuff like the Non-Aligned Movement prevailing as the dominant force and unexpected victory of democracy in the face of a gridlocked system meant to benefit its strongest members echo enough elements of our history to be real while adding an optimistic spin. The story of the colonies fighting against an alien world, their history before contact was reestablished, and the period of uncertainty before the Confederacy's founding all sounds like they could be full-length stories of their own. Imagine how many people worked nonstop for the dream of a united but fair system, whether out of memories passed down to them or dreams of a better future. It's just so full of... hope. Not to mention that each of the member states sound like they could be unique parts of one whole, united in their common past but distinct enough to have their own unique identities. I just love seeing so many different people united behind a cause, and it feels so much more interesting than a relatively universal or homogenous identity. The background of their ancestors, and how that's evolved with their people also feels pretty unique. This is a level of fluff writing that'll only impact the game so much, but I love Antares for it more than I think I can explain. So yeah, I wish the best for Antares and hope humanity sees a place like it one day, though more as what it has become than what it was.

I just realized that like the GTU's "Terra Invicta", The Antares Confederation needs a national rally cry. (I know it has a national motto but "Hic Manebimus Optime" doesn't have that patriotic kick to it.) In case one does not appear in the Prologue, some ideas can be considered. "Antares Iunctus", "Antares In Foedus", "Simul Astra", "Praemisit Antares", etc.

Humanity came in an enormous star system to go away from overpopulation on Earth, and started to terraform every planet and moon in that system. But since the Alliance was founded, it has always refuse to recognize the existence of the one and only thing that it fears since its creation : the Reavers. Humans who live and who are navigating at the borders of the system, and who are basically devastating all form of civilization when they go inside the colonies. They are known for four things they do : they plunder, they rape, they kill, and if that was not enough, they eat most of their victims. Scientific names are in Latin, it's touched alot.
@aidanfurst85124 жыл бұрын
@@andrewdiaz3529 Yeah that's definitely true. I dunno though, the premise for the motto was its historical context, which isn't the historical background of most of these peoples. I think it would've been more fitting to have an ancient chinese or arabic saying as the motto, everything in science fiction uses bloody latin as the base.
@HypnoticChronic14 жыл бұрын
Latin makes sense in the fact its a dead language and does not show favoritism to any of the predominate languages that come from those areas formerly inhabited and that lack of favoritism is a primary tenet in which the Confederacy had been established, along with it being used in the scientific/law/governmental fields three things any nation needs to reestablish itself. Also if you look at it from a historical standpoint many of the regions and languages from which the colonists came from either have their root in Latin or had Latin spoken in the region during the Empire. To give you a few examples South America almost all countries there speak Spanish aside from Brazil, Guyana, Suriname and French Guinea are respectively Portuguese, English, Dutch and French now consider that French, Portuguese and Spanish are Romance languages having their root in Latin. Now to the Middle East which is home to Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria and Turkey all of which had been under Imperial rule as a unified Roman Empire or later the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire despite the latter eventually switching to Greek as a primary language it can be assumed Latin had been spoken there by either colonists, government officials or the Legions. Now if we look at Africa particularly the northern part Egypt, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, and Libya also had been under Roman rule thus had Latin spoken there as per the aforementioned reasons, as for the rest of Africa Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Comoros, Congo, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ivory Coast, Djibouti, Gabon, Guinea, Madagascar, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Rwanda, Senegal, Seychelles, Togo all speak French while Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, São Tomé and Príncipe all speak Portuguese and Equatorial Guinea, (while not a offically recognized county) Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic being the only ones that speaks Spanish and if you want to throw Eritrea, Ethiopia and Somalia all once had Italian spoken in them. So out of the 54 countries in Africa that only leaves 22 that had been touched by Latin or derivative language in some way. If we move onto Oceania and Asia French Polynesia, New Caledonia, and Vanuatu speak French while places like Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam had French spoken in them for a time, Carolines, Guam, Marianas, Palaos and Philippines had Spanish spoken in them, Portuguese is spoken in East Timor (while this is no longer the case) Macau and Goa also had spoken Portuguese. TL:DR So to sum it up if you consider that Latin is considered a dead language thus cannot whole be claimed as a mother tongue by any of the colonists as to not show favoritism or its use in scientific/law/governmental fields and the areas and people that spoke Latin directly or one of its off shoot languages and compare that with the colonists of the Confederacy former home nations Latin is a logical choice.
@aidanfurst85124 жыл бұрын
@@HypnoticChronic1 Christ what a write up, good job. Definitely good stuff to think about. I think the key factor you're ignoring is the cultural association between Latin and imperialist colonialism. The whole "let's put a Latin motto on everything" trend was a big part of exporting European culture during the period of European imperialism. This was something which was widely despised in the Middle East, Asia, and Oceania. I can understand the historical links you're making between these places and Latin, they're well reasoned. But just because Latin is a dead language doesn't mean it has no historical meaning. It's possible that the confederacy would have adopted it, but I just find it very hard to believe that a coalition of the very nations that were most adversely effected by European imperialism would choose Latin for their motto. But hey, I'm just being pedantic because I enjoy the series.
@HypnoticChronic14 жыл бұрын
@@aidanfurst8512 That is a fair assessment no doubt however, I would like to clarify one thing the reasoning I pointed out Latin specifically as a dead language was not due to its historical context but, because that none of the countries that the colonists had once called home could claim it as their own language if they had chosen one of those from the former countries it could have been interpreted as a sign of favoritism, which by what I took from the prologue the Confederacy was attempting to avoid at all costs. This was just me putting myself in the shoes of a politician in the Confederacy thinking what would cause the least amount of friction between the member states and yet be a somewhat uniting factor. I can see the point your making as well with Latin being a reminder of the colonial past, but to my mind I would have to think the colonized people would hold more resentment to the spoken language of the occupiers themselves rather than a language of a people long since passed which those occupiers merely had revered, despite that train of logic many of those same people still actively use the language of their former occupiers as I had pointed out be it for efficiency sake or just viewing it as a non issue. We could also speculate that this is far enough in the future and resentment has all but died out, to give a real world example of such a case take a look at the relationship between US and British citizens neither view the other as "the enemy" so to speak nor do their respective governments despite fighting two wars with the other, but go back just a 120 years and that hatred and resentment is still alive and well so much so that the British had been seriously concerned that the US may well have sided with the Central Powers in WWI. So this line of thinking leads me to conclude that the citizens of the Confederacy would take a stance similar to the stance the US took during its infant years and try not to concern themselves with "old world problems" and focus on the here and now and the future. That being said this is merely speculation on my part I could well be 100% wrong, hell both of us could be and that is perfectly fine as well, it will be interesting to see what direction Templin takes it I remember during the GTU campaign the chat really latching onto the whole water conservation narrative and that becoming probably more than it was ever meant to be. This could be another one of such moments and say a Confederate historian runs across some old archives that mentions the Roman occupation of Egypt for 600 years which triggers a series of riots and defacing the motto on public institutions and monuments or some such which itself leads to a system seceding from the Confederacy, Templin has always been good with putting narrative spin on in game events and I don't believe they will let us down this time either. Also apologies for the read yet again when I enjoy a discussion I tend to get on a roll well... you can see for yourself what happens, again sorry.

I just had a realization what if Invicta season 2 takes place in the same universe as season 1 but in a different galaxy and it may be possible that at the end of season we will encounter the colonization fleet from the GTU that was send to colonize a new galaxy at the end of season 1. Hell the fleet could arrive earlier that i may think and act like a fallen empire as time travel was mentioned. So the Confederacy may not have to liberate earth but instaid encounter a massively powerful interstellar empire. What do you guys think.
@marcog.verbruggen6744 жыл бұрын
both the GTU and the flotilla that became Antares are explicitly from earth, with a different history. GTU was modern day earth got attacked by aliens and survived, Antares is that same earth but in the future started exploring in a "normal" way and antares is a lost colony. so if anything, it would imply some multiverse shenanigans.
@alfagamingnl18154 жыл бұрын
@@marcog.verbruggen674 I am a bit rusty on the GTU back story but was i really modern day earth or was it one that had technologically regressed to the point that it looked like modern day (in this theory GTU earth had regressed its technology because of the grief the loss of the colony ship caused). But still this is why i asked what you guys think its nice to see different perspectives.
@shadowtheme964 жыл бұрын
@@alfagamingnl1815 I suppose it is somewhat plausible? Though if memory serves, in Invicta Season 1 prior to the devastating attack by the Byrum that almost wiped out Humanity, Earth's space programs were still in its infancy. I remember the United Nations organizing a ragtag screen of orbital defense satellites in an attempt to intercept the Byrum space ships in orbit but were swept aside. In Season 2, Earth's space programs were already advanced enough that we have warp gates and flotilas of space exploration vessels. Heck we've even managed to reach Alpha Centauri and other solar systems. Regardless of how much technology might regress as a result from the grief of losing such a massive colonization fleet, it doesn't seem possible for it to fall back THAT far to the point that we can't even field anything but satellites. Sure advancement might stagnant, with riots and civil unrest erupting around the world. At the very least I'd imagine Earth in Season 2 will at least be able to maintain their existing fleets and various research outposts in space. So even if an entity such as the Byrum were to show up there'd be a bigger fight in space. Whether we can beat back the Byrum invasion fleet is a different matter, but Earth will almost certainly fair better in Season 2 than in Season 1.

I can't be the only one who thinks that the stories of the early Antares colonies would be really interesting.

When war comes I think the inherent weakness of the military setup in place can be overcome by simple competition, i.e. the Interstellar government 'requests' xyz materiel, and far from acting as an obstacle to this, the individual states actually compete heavily to provide as much of this as possible, in order to maximise spending on their own planets, and to build up as much of the necessary industry as possible to maximise the odds of them acquiring even more contracts in the future. This could also be used as a plot device, i.e. those planets that 'traditionally' (after many decades) fulfil most of the military procurement contracts become more xenophobic and jingoistic when meeting new alien species in order to necessitate more military spending and thus more business for them, while the poorer ones without that industry argue for more diplomacy, less expansion, and more development on the home planets.

Would love for stellaris to have scenarios like this with pre-set events and stuff.

This story was incredible! If this was a Sci-Fi book I would happily pick it up and read the whole thing, particularly if some of the artwork from this episode was the cover for the book

Honestly... those 8 intended messages and the several hundret(-s) more that they recieved sound like desperate calls for help. As if earth was attacked and wiped out. cough cough DOOM ETERNAL intro cough cough.

I imagine the first 8 are normal stuff, and then the rest are increasingly frantic ones, starting from simple 'something approaches' all the way to screams and warnings to not return to Sol ever again, that its all lost.

@@Runetrantor exactly. And then a final one: don't return to earth, there is nothing left here. Kind of like obi-wan's message not to return to the jedi temple.

The Confederacy's parliament sounds very similar to that of Australia's parliament, which is based on the Westminster system.
