@KinnPlays Of course! And Christ also came specially for the illiterate, who could never in their life times read even a line of the Bible. Christianity is not the religion of the book, but of the Person - whom we truly meet in the Eucharist.
@meusisto4 жыл бұрын
@@leahjames6870 In a nutshell, I realized it made no sense to believe that God allowed his religion to be corrupted (soon after its beginning), then allow it to be restored only 15 or 16 centuries later, just to be corrupted again a little later (since protestants disagree with one another on some key issues) and even so believe that I particularly was in the right denomination, stp. Moreover, that meant I believed not in Christianity, but in the Bible: but a book can't talk by itself and must be interpreted. Thus there are many different interpretations. This way I believed only in myself, in my interpretation. In short: it was stopping believing in myself and beginning to trust in Christ.

I was a protestant for 40 years and converted to Catholicism after reading Church history, studying the history of protestant reformation, and observing the many problems with the protestant arguments. One clear observation, if Christ did not leave us with a Church, Christianity would look very different today. Protestants take the Nicene Creed for granted.The Church formulated the creed in response to heresies plaguing Christianity, mainly Arianism and Gnosticism. Each part of the creed is in response to a heresy the Church spent centuries combating. Had there not been a Church to formulate theology, the faith would nothing like it does today. You cannot read Apostolic Fathers without seeing they all strongly believed in a single Church. Christ instructed us not to divide and 500 years after the protestant reformation there are thousands of protestant denominations each claiming to have a better understanding of the scriptures than all the others. And every day more are created. As a protestant, I knew very little about the Catholic Church. What I knew I learned from other protestants who learned what they knew from other protestants. It wasn't until I began reading about the early Church did I have any concept of the full history of our faith. I knew of Aquinas, Augustine, and a few others but had only a cursory understanding. I had not read what early Christians who worshiped with the apostles had written. What did they have to say and how did they worship? All this is lost to protestants who stop at the death of Paul and don't pick up again for another 1,500 years. The depth and richness of Catholicism is mind boggling. If you are a protestant and curious to know what you've been missing, I recommend reading "The Fathers of the Church" by Mike Aquilina. It's a broad overview but it's a start.

Silverbird901 You can believe in a single Church and not call yourself a Catholic. In fact it’s easier, because you include all sons and daughters of Christ, those who are saved, as fellow members of your church body in Christ. We are unified in Christ, not Catholicism. We should be small “c” catholics, if that makes sense. (in the sense that catholic means universal). When you decide to name something as “the” church beyond Christ, you are actually the one drawing divisions. I agree that people should learn more Church history. Most protestants would find themselves agreeing with most Church fathers.

@tysonguess5 жыл бұрын
@@lukericker8325 "When you decide to name something as “the” church beyond Christ," Your issue then is with Christ because He is the one who said the Church founded on Peter would never be prevailed against (Matthew 16:18). He also said we have recourse to this church (singular) when we have disagreements and He said that this church (singular) will bind and loose infallibly (matthew 18:17). If heaven cannot affirm a false teaching, then Jesus is saying that this earthly authority He established will bind and loose (permit and forbid in regards to the faith) infallibly. So, since Jesus said we have recourse to this earthly authority it must exist in every century and it will be the only church that has made binding decisions that all Christians believe. There is only one church that meets that standard. In the absence of that earthly authority Christians can never have anything more than scriptural relativism. One can feel morally justified in how they interpret scripture but in the absence of the authority of the Church we can never know with certainty what scripture means with epistemic certainty. Which explains the ever growing fractured state of Protestantism. I too was a Protestant apologist and lay philosopher until I encountered the early church, which was thoroughly Catholic.

20:06 From a Catholic perspective, the importance of Rome can be seen in two aspects: 1) It is not important simply because that's where Saint Peter died. But because that's where he was Bishop. The leaders of the Church after the Ascension of Christ were the Bishops, and Peter was the first among them. So after his death, the new heads of the Church would be his successors in what he was: the Bishop of Rome. 2) Rome is also symbol. The Romans were the ones who crucified Christ, and first persecuted His followers. So the head of the Church being in Rome, the center of the Empire who tried to crush "a small movement from Judea" , is a remembrance to the power of God that can defeat your worst enemy, no matter how big, and turn him into your friend and supporter.

Pat Aherne actually that is incorrect. The term “Roman Catholic” refers to the liturgical rite used at the mass. Most people that call themselves “Catholic” are of the Roman rite. There are different rites in the Catholic Church such as the Byzantine, Coptic, Armenian, etc. which are Catholic and under the authority of the Pope as well, they simply use a different liturgical rite.
@jg20725 жыл бұрын
Again I bring up the need to a a specificity to language. Throwing around the term Catholic to only being Roman Catholic doesn't help the discussion. But on the other hand saying Roman Catholic gives a definite starting point. Work to fully explain your point so that we dan advance the discussion. Peace
@JoeLandrigan5 жыл бұрын
@@jg2072I may have misunderstood you, but I think you have this backwards. "Roman Catholic" is shorthand for "Roman Rite Catholic" and is excessively specific and doesn't actually refer to a church, but to a subset of that church. All Catholics belong to the church of the Pope, regardless of whether they are Maronite Catholic, Byzantine Catholic, Roman Catholic, etc. Something like 90% of Catholics are Roman Catholics, but if you are referring to the people who hold the beliefs that "Roman Catholics" hold (which all Catholics necessarily also hold) then you should not say "Roman Catholic" but "Catholic." The only difference between "Roman Catholics" and non-Roman Rite Catholics is the way they worship. That difference may mean one rite speaks Aramaic in their worship service, and another speaks Greek, but it's the same beliefs. So "Catholic" is actually the more appropriate term under 99% of scenarios.

There are many Christians in their denomination who feel bound by traditional loyalties and needlessly so, but one cannot force them to leave if they choose to remain. @@lolhey6954 Jesus, has set up a Church headed by Peter as the rock of the Church to teach others what Jesus has taught and given divine backing to the Catholic Church that Satan will not over come it in Matt 16 :18 I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. Jesus appointed His disciples to be His representatives on Earth by investing divine authority unto them when He breathed the Holy Spirit into them in John 20:20 Jesus gave the keys of His Kingdom to Peter and the authority to act on His behalf- to.bind and loosen in Matt 16 : 16 -19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. "The keys" are abilities to open and explain the Gospel truths, and a mission and commission from Christ to make use of them; and being said to be given to Peter particularly, denotes his after qualifications, commission, work, and usefulness in opening the door of faith, or preaching the Gospel first to the Jews, ( Acts 2:1-47 ) and then to the Gentiles, ( Acts 10:1-48 ) ( Acts 15:7 Acts 15:14) and who was the first that made use of the keys of evangelical knowledge with respect to both, after he, with the rest of the apostles, had received an enlarged commission to preach the Gospel to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. There are 32000 denominations each proclaiming to be the one true Church. The only way is to look back to see what Jesus taught and what the Apostles and early Church believed. They all.hold Catholic beliefs like the true presence of the Eucharist etc. The Apostles were also given the authority to bind and loose and the authority to retain / forgive sins in John 20:21 - 23 So Jesus said to them again, “Peace to you!As the Father has sent Me, I also send you.” And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.” Jesus promised to be with the Catholic Church till the end of time and the mandate to proclaim the Good News in Matt 28:20 teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." Thus the Apostles have divine authority to represent Jesus on Earth and knew the correct interpretations of what Jesus taught. That is why they wrote the New Testament under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. The Apostles passed on these teachings to the Early Church Fathers and their disciples. The teachings and doctrines of the Catholic Church after 2000 years is the same as what Jesus taught and what the Apostles upheld. All of the present Catholic clergy can trace their ordination back to the Apostles. These are the biblical basis of the Catholic Church. All other 32000 denominations/churches including yours are founded by men without any divine authority and are not found in the bible.

I'm very intellectually driven. And intellectually the Catholic Church interests me quite a bit more than protestantism. And in all honesty, I knew more about theology than the average christian, I'd say. I was already a christian and I was anti the Catholic Church with conviction. The deciding factor for me to become Catholic, surprisingly, had nothing to do with intellect. I did not want, by any means, to become a Catholic! I was fasting and praying quite a lot at the time, then a series of "coincidences" started happening in my life. When there are two or three it's ok, but when in a short period of time there are around ten or fifteen coincidences... well, makes you think, right? So I started remembering things ever since I was a child. And in each place I had lived, each address, each country there was something that was profound and related to the Catholic faith that I had never noticed in my life. My entire life was laid out in front of my eyes and I could suddenly see a pattern, a path that I was suppose to follow. That gave me a lot of anxiety, because I had known my whole life the Catholics adored saints and the Virgin Mary and that that was wrong. Finally I decided to go to a Catholic Church. When I finally did, about two weeks later, I was very skeptical, and so was my wife who I had convinced to accompany me. She was not a big fan of the Catholic church, I'll tell you that much. There was no way I could have a transformative experience, I thought. I expected it to be boring and a mistake. What was I doing there? I did not know much about a Catholic Mass, I did not know exactly what the sacraments meant to a Catholic, but a few minutes after the Mass started my whole life changed. I felt for the first time in my life a direct connection to another realm... God, the angels, all of that (mind you, it was in the beginning of the service, not during the Eucharist when Catholics actually believe that that happens - but I didn't even know that at the time). It was the most unique feeling that I've ever had and I don't know if I'll ever experience it again. Out of nowhere it was like a storm going on inside my body, I had goose bumps ALL OVER. I had NEVER felt like that. I looked to my wife and I was tearing up and I could't even talk (for her it was a regular Mass, but she noticed something was different for me). At that moment I just knew I was home. And I don't say home because it's just a way of saying it. I truthfully felt like that, like I was my home, and that that's where I was supposed to be. My wife also converted and is also a devout Catholic. It doesn't matter if you want to believe a certain way or not, it doesn't matter if you understand something or not... some things are the way they are, the way God created them to be.

Also, how can you be so sure about what I study or what I don't study? As to your other comment, how can you understand from 'I was once a protestant. Now I'm a Catholic." that I said there were only two options? How exactly could you know what I did or did not consider before? I appreciate the candid and respectful discourse in this video -- but, listening to the Catholic Theologian's explanations I cannot help but see that much of what he says is in disagreement with what I read in God's Word. I am a 'Born Again' Protestant, saved by the Grace of God through faith at the age of 51 yrs., I'm now 77 yrs. old. I was born and raised in the Catholic Church, went to Catholic schools through high school, even went to a seminary for 6 months. In all that time, I was never encouraged to read, nor study Scripture -- and instead was told that performing all the Catholic rituals would get me into Heaven. Consequently, my life became a search for self satisfaction, filled with sin and broken relationships/marriages. My oldest daughter got genuinely saved during those years and tried her best to gently witness to me -- it fell on deaf ears -- until God brought my life to a point where I knew I needed someone other than me to control my life. With my daughter's prompting, I said a feeble, half-hearted prayer to Jesus, asking Him to take control of my life -- I really did not expect answer. The answer came that very morning, as the Holy Spirit convicted me of my total selfishness and sinfulness, and my total need for Jesus. That was 25 years ago, and since then my life has changed 180 degrees -- all by the grace of God. I have now been actively studying the Bible for those 25 years, and simply cannot reconcile many of the major Roman Catholic teachings with what God's Word clearly says. I know that I am a saved sinner, being sanctified and sealed by the Holy Spirit -- just as God's Word says. We are not saved because we are sanctified, we are sanctified because we are saved. Ephesians 1:13-14 -- "And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession-to the praise of his glory." In my understanding, Catholic doctrines like the 'Treasury of Merit' are a clear contradiction to the all-sufficient atonement of Christ, clearly taught by the Scriptures -- and even as stated by the Catholic Theologian in this video. As for our good works, Isaiah 64:6 says -- "All of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags; we all shrivel up like a leaf, and like the wind our sins sweep us away." I do believe there are many truly saved Roman Catholics, who have fully put their trust in Christ for their salvation, just as I am sure there are many professing Protestants who are not truly saved, because they are trying to earn their salvation -- salvation is a gift of God. Ephesians 2:8-9 -- "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith-and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God-not by works, so that no one can boast." May the peace of our Lord be with you.

The reason I came back to the Catholic Church: John 6:47 "Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me has everlasting life. I am the bread of life. Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and are dead. This is the bread which comes down from heaven, that one may eat of it and not die. I am the living bread which came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever; and the bread that I shall give is My flesh, which I shall give for the life of the world." The Jews therefore quarreled among themselves, saying, “How can this Man give us His flesh to eat?” Then Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in you. Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. For My flesh is food indeed, and My blood is drink indeed. He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him. As the living Father sent Me, and I live because of the Father, so he who feeds on Me will live because of Me. This is the bread which came down from heaven-not as your fathers ate the manna, and are dead. He who eats this bread will live forever.” These things said he in the synagogue, as he taught in Capernaum. Therefore many of His disciples, when they heard this, said, “This is a hard saying; who can understand it?” When Jesus knew in Himself that His disciples complained about this, He said to them, “Does this offend you? What then if you should see the Son of Man ascend where He was before? It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life. "But there are some of you who do not believe." For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were who did not believe, and who it was that would betray Him. And He said, “Therefore I have said to you that no one can come to Me unless it has been granted to him by My Father.” From that time many of His disciples went back and walked with Him no more. Then Jesus said to the twelve, “Do you also want to go away?” But Simon Peter answered Him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. Also we have come to believe and know that You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”

Key phrase: "I've been studying church history for a long time, and I'm still not a Catholic...I don't feel like I have to be." At the point where you believe what the Catholic Church teaches about the sacraments, then that's when you will realize a Catholic is what you have to be...because when you believe what the Church teaches about the sacraments, you will want to receive them. Chris - I think it's going to be interesting to watch Matt for the next few years... He's clearly a Well Educated person on matters of the Faith, and he's "dangerously" close to making the same "Mistake" I made a few years ago - the same "mistake" Scott Hahn, Marcus Grodi, Dave Anders, and countless others have made. :-) And of course, that "Mistake" is in giving The Church a fair hearing. Speaking ONLY for myself - I'm like the friend that Dr. Homes discussed in the early part of the video. I accepted Christ, But then (years later) I DID Come to the Realization that Christ founded an actual, visible, earthly Church, and that it still exists. Faced with that realization, I found myself with no choice BUT to accept HIS Church (and its been a Wonderful choice!!!). However, I respect that others Can (and do) reach different conclusions.

I'm curious, are you familiar with St. John Henry Newman?
@anar36025 жыл бұрын
What do you mean by "divine interpreter"? * Do you not believe Jesus' words in John 16:13-15? * Are we not called to follow Abraham example, taking God at His word? An act of faith and expectation which was accounted to him as righteousness _(James __2:23__)?_ _ _ _ _ John 16:13-15 - _"However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, _*_He will guide you_*_ into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears _*_He will speak;_*_ and _*_He will tell you_*_ things to come. He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and _*_declare it to you._*_ All things that the Father has are Mine. Therefore I said that He will take of Mine and j.gdeclare it to you."*_ James 2:23 - _"And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “Abraham _*_believed God,_*_ and it was accounted to him for righteousness.” And _*_he was called the friend of God."_* . . . . . . . This is one of the issues I have with the doctrines of the RCC. That they encourage lack of understanding and faith in God's desire and ability to fulfill what He has promised. Instead they call it penitent and humble to walk in a lack of faith. When in reality we can stand as saints in the righteousness of Jesus Christ _(2 Cor __5:21__),_ boldly able to come before the throne of our holy God and Father. Hebrews 4:16 - _"Let us therefore _*_come boldly_*_ to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need."_

@XYU When you say "church", do you mean a man-made religious organization or the definition the Bible gives of a spiritual entity that is made up of all born-again believers that make up the body of Jesus Christ? Yes, I agree that God can use men both good and evil to assemble HIS BOOK. BUT if the catholic church hadn't existed, would it have come about anyway? *of course* Why? Because God is able, even inspite of the stupidity of mankind.
@anar36025 жыл бұрын
@XYU When I speak to catholics they wear the achievement of the assembly of the Bible as a crown of eternal righteousness on behalf of the RCC. As if it equates a man-made religious organization unto righteousness there after. While forgetting that all religious organizations are made up of both righteous and evil men because we are in a fallen world where humanity has a propensity for evil. It is this very type of docrine that is used by all cults that places their "church" as the gatekeeper to Heaven. Making their "church" the way, the truth, and the life. This is a blasphemous teaching that robs glory from YHWH, and introduces idolatry that ultimately leads to damnation. This is likely why there are thousands of protestant denominations. Because no one religious organization is holier than other. Righteousness is defined individually before a Holy God. YHWH is a personal God first, before being a corporate God. It is only IN Him that each body part is a member of His Church. Why? Simply put, salvation is found in Jesus alone.
@anar36025 жыл бұрын
@@joemen3332 You mean someone needs an man-made religious organization aside from having the Holy Spirit to preach the gospel? That's the silliest thing EVER! Hello . . . do you know how many missionaries have gone into the mission field with no backing. God told them to go, so they went. He directed them, He provided, He opened doors and souls were won. Sorry but you need to listen to testimonies after testimonies after testimonies of all the marvelous things God has and is doing. All I can tell you is that He is way bigger than you're giving Him credit for.
@anar36025 жыл бұрын
@XYU So if you agree that a man-made religious organization is made up of both evil and righteous men. Why would you equate the doctrines that come out of the religious organization as righteous and equating it to "the one true church" that is the gatekeeper to heaven? That logic sounds beyond flimsy?

@pi4t6515 жыл бұрын
@XYU Speaking as a Protestant, I think the contention about Mary isn't about a particular devotion about her, or about any supposed appearances made by her (miracles being attributed to saints is of course something we would disagree on as a general principle, but I think most Protestants would concede that if they were mistaken and saints *could* arrange for miracles then Mary would be able to do so). The thing that causes contention is (from a Protestant perspective) the Catholic Church's extreme regard for Mary. Now, we might be misinterpreting things - we do only have an outside perspective, so maybe this is simply a misunderstanding. Or I might be misinformed altogether on some points, in which case I'm sorry and please correct me. But from my perspective, it looks like Catholics attach enormous significance and importance to Mary, declaring her the "Queen of Heaven" and seeming to treat her as second only to God Himself. I'm not sure of the formal doctrines - maybe a few other people (Peter, maybe?) are technically placed higher up but she's way up and seems to be venerated far more than anyone else in practice. Again, maybe this is inaccurate - I'm only saying what it looks like from my position. Based on what I see in the Bible, she doesn't seem *that* significant. I mean, yes, she's a very important figure in history and is doubtless with all the other saints now, but I don't see anything placing her above, say, Ezekiel, or John the Baptist.

@@pi4t651 Hi, pi4t. Mary is, indeed, exceptional to the Catholic Church. There are many reasons for it, many of them Biblical. However, she is still not God and we do not worship her as God. Here is a list of reasons why she is exceptional. (No particular order.) I understand that you might not believe everything I put below, but perhaps you can come to understand that *if* the Catholics are right about all these things, then it is no wonder that she gets special veneration. (Not worship.) 1. Mary, more than any other human being other than Jesus, has had a special relationship with the Holy Spirit throughout her life. We know specifically that the Holy Spirit was there at her conception (the Immaculate Conception), He was also there at Christ Jesus’s conception, and she was also at the Pentecost. However, we also know that the Holy Spirit has had a special relationship with her throughout. 2. God the Father, the Holy Spirit, and Jesus Himself entrusted her with the life of Jesus Christ from conception to adulthood. Jesus *gave himself to her* for care and protection. 3. Luke 1:48: “Behold, from now on will all ages call me blessed.” (Who, throughout the ages, has called Mary blessed? Not most of Protestantism-but the Catholic and Orthodox Churches have.) 4. At the foot of the cross, Jesus Christ Himself proclaims Mary the mother of his church, and puts her under the care of the Church through the Apostle. By this proclamation Jesus Christ named Mary our spiritual mother. Not a part of the godhood, but she clearly has a special role in the Church. As such, she helps us and nurtures us the way only a perfected spiritual mother can. 5. Mary is shown in Revelations as the queen of heaven. 6. There have been many apparitions of Mary, including ones like Fatima, where upwards of sixty thousand people witnessed her miraculous sign made with the sun. 7. The Bible shows her in Cana working as an intercessor for the family having the wedding. Jesus first resists, but she persists and he then agrees, at which point she says to the servants to do whatever he says-because she is always aligned with Jesus’s and God’s will! But how strange that Jesus would seem to change his mind! What is being shown here? It shows that Mary has a special role to intercede and she has influence over what God does! The results then and now are miraculous. 8. The New Testament is full of perfected “types” from the Old Testament. Adam was the imperfect first born, while Jesus was the perfected one. Eve was the imperfect and disobedient mother of humanity, while Mary was the sinless (preserved from sin by Christ and the Holy Spirit at the Immaculate Conception) and fully obedient handmaiden of the Lord. The Ark of the Covenant was the sacred receptacle for the written word of God, while Mary was the pure and unstained vessel for the Word mad Flesh, Jesus Christ. 9. Certainly, just by virtue of being the mother of our Lord, she deserves special honor and respect. There are many, many more things--these are just the ones off the top of my head. To Catholics, it is manifest both from the Holy Traditions passed down from Christ and the Apostles and from the written Traditions of Holy Scripture that Christ Jesus meant for Mary to have a special role in the Church as our spiritual mother, and that she is very involved with helping all of mankind for the sake of her son. If Christ deemed it so, then we honor it!
@markfreivald12525 жыл бұрын
@@pi4t651 One more thing worth mentioning, pi4t. Mary, more than any other human being, shared the perfect love with Jesus Christ. Of all human intercessors, she with her pure heart has the greatest knowledge and experience to bring us closer to loving Christ perfectly. We turn to her to help us find that love, and everything we seek through Mary is directed toward Jesus Christ. Furthermore, she always wills what God wills as was shown in scripture, so we are completely confident in her spiritual guidance and intercession.

@@markfreivald1252 Thanks for the respectful response. I'd like to respond in kind to the points you raised, explaining how I see them as a Protestant. As before, I'm not trying to attack you, or Catholicism, just explaining the different conclusions. I think your second message really shows the fundamental difference between the Catholic and Protestant understanding of Mary. But let's go through the points in order. 1) Rather famously, most Protestants (myself included) don't believe in the Immaculate Conception, since we don't think it's supported by the Bible. (The Bible also doesn't explicitly say she was there at Pentecost, although I agree it seems reasonable given she was at the crucifixion, and John had taken her into his home by this point. But of course, receiving the Holy Spirit at Pentecost doesn't set her aside from the other believers at that time.) I can see how holding those doctrines would lead one to hold Mary in high regard, though. 2) Hmm...that's a reasonable point. I hadn't thought about it that way before. 3) I disagree here - I think most if not all Protestants would say that Mary was blessed, and blessed greatly. I mean it says so in the Bible - apart from Mary's song, Gabriel tells her that she is "highly favoured". But one can be greatly blessed without receiving the veneration that Catholicism gives to her. Also, if someone is blessed they're very much receiving a gift from God, and one which is unearned. While the gift is very good, it seems strange to me to honour someone for being given a gift. It would be like giving a child honour because their parents gave them a lot of money, if you'll forgive the crude metaphor. Shouldn't any honour in Mary being blessed go to God who did the blessing? 4) I read that as a far less symbolic and more human thing - Jesus knew his mother would need to be cared for, and even while being crucified he made arrangements accordingly. If he'd been meaning his pronouncement as announcing that Mary would be the mother of the church, wouldn't he have said "behold your mother" to Peter rather than John? Especially if Catholicism is correct about Peter's importance as the first Pope, the rock on which Christ built his church, etc. On the other hand, if he was just making sure Mary would be looked after, it makes sense he'd choose John - he was particularly close to John, and we know that Peter had a mother in law and thus presumably also a wife to look after already. 5) Sorry to be a pedant, but Revelation*. Addressing the actual point you make, I've seen...rather a lot of contradictory interpretations of things in Revelation, which people have believed in quite firmly. Comes of not having a unifying set of doctrines across Protestantism, I suppose. The upshot is, I'm dubious about any specific interpretation of the signs and prophecies in Revelation - we see the general pattern, but I don't think we'll see what was specifically being described in each verse until the new creation has come and we have the benefit of hindsight. With that in mind, I don't think the Catholic interpretation of that passage as definitely being a literal description of Mary's significance holds up on its own merits - even if I were Catholic, I think I'd only accept that interpretation because it was part of Catholic doctrine. 6) I'm not familiar enough with events like these to comment on their theological implications, so I'll simply let this one pass as "not something I've heard of". Although...if the Catholic position on saints, prayer and miracles is correct, and if Mary does tend to show up a lot more than other saints...might that not just be because you're praying to her more? 7) Interesting. I wouldn't have taken that as a sign of Mary always being in line with God's will, but just of her faith in her son. If you're present when I'm having an operation, and I tell you to do whatever the doctor tells you, that doesn't mean my will is fundamentally aligned with the doctor's - just that I trust that the doctor knows what he's doing better than I do! Similarly, I wouldn't have taken the fact that it was Mary who got Jesus to change his mind as a sign that she has special influence to do so. There are, after all, other examples of Jesus (seemingly) being persuaded to change his mind. The woman who talked about eating scraps under the table springs to mind, as does the centurion who told Jesus it wasn't necessary to come to his house. I'd take it as a sign that Jesus will listen to any of us and our prayers might persuade him to change his plans - that we don't need an intercessor between us and him, and more than Mary did. This is getting a bit long, so I'll finish up in a second comment.
@pi4t6515 жыл бұрын
8) Hmm. I'm afraid I don't see the connection here. If Eve was an imperfect parallel to Mary, wouldn't we have expected her to come before Adam and be his mother rather than his wife? If we're going to read a parallel to Eve in the New Testament, I'd say a more obvious choice would be his bride - ie the church as a whole. Not sure about the parallel with the Ark, either - Jesus repeatedly described his own body as the Temple, and it's again his body which is identified with the veil in the temple in Hebrews. Plus the Ark was the symbol of God's covenant with the Israelites - the symbol of the new covenant could be said to be Christ's body, or the bread and wine of communion/mass, or perhaps the cross - but I'd find it hard to accept "Mary's body" as a candidate. From my perspective, this looks more like the Catholic Church has reached its conclusions about Mary from other reasons, and then looked for parallels of her in the light of that, rather than seeing those parallels and using that as a basis for their respect for her. And that would be a completely reasonable thing to have done, as long as those parallels don't end up becoming used as justification for the conclusions that were already assumed. 9) Agreed, though perhaps we'd disagree on just how much honour and respect that calls for :) As I said, your second message seems to show the core of the difference between our views of Mary. As a Protestant, I don't see Mary having the things you described. It's clear that she had a strong faith, of course, and that she put that faith into action when she accepted God's task for her. But there have been many notable Christians who have done that throughout the ages, and indeed many prophets in Old Testament times. I don't see anything in scripture to show that she was anything more than a faithful (by human standards) servant of God who was given the utterly unique job of being God's own mother. Which would obviously still make her very significant (see point 9) but perhaps not worthy of the veneration Catholics give her?

Truly a wonderful series of conversations. I am a life-long Roman Catholic and this is really the first time that I have see this type of respectful conversations between fellow Christians who love and live the words of Jesus. I look forward to each of these videos. Keep up the amazing work.

Very nice conversation. I suggest you also interview the Byzantine Catholic chaplain at Wyoming Catholic. By the way...the Syriac Maronite Catholics & the Byzantine Italo-Greek Catholics never were in schism with Rome.

How about Chaldean? I was privileged to be at a Chaldean Mass in San Diego, where the default liturgical language was Aramaic, not Latin. Yet the prayers, translated into English, and the heart of the Liturgy were the same. More poetic, more Eastern, but the ancient prayers were so familiar to this Roman Catholic. Chaldean is also Catholic but I don't know if they reunited or never were in schism

@@CrankyGrandma I know Syriac Catholics & have seen Chaleans on EWTN...I didn't mention them because this theologian is at Wyoming Catholic College, which also has a Byzantine chaplain.

@@CrankyGrandma I understand that Chaldeans are reunited Nestorians.

Antonius Rusticus the Chaldeans are primarily in San Diego and I think Detroit? In the US. Mostly Iraqi refuges. Still speaking Aramaic! The liturgy was profoundly beautiful. If you get a chance to go, definitely do so

Cranky Grandma you’re right on the Detroit part! Basically all of metro Detroit, tons of Chaldean churches, stores, bakeries, restaurants etc!

Great discussion! Feels like a peaceful oases after listening to a couple of "militant" religious channels.

Unfortunately, even with "explanatory videos" there are far too often "militants" in the comments, who don't really listen, but condemn others with their way of expressing themselves.

@@manub.3847 Take heart, Manu. This is the world we live in, but these discussions only have any effect inasmuch as God uses them to do so. Passions and egos will assert themselves, and we are helpless against them--but God knows what is in there hearts, and he can use our faults and ignorance to shape our hearts. The strife and discord that we see is not the whole picture!

Matt, thank you for what you do. I am learning so much about each Christian denomination; Orthodox, Catholic Protestant and I’m sure much more to come.
