Hi Phillip, thanks. Another strategy could be to write the ratios as fractions labelled by what they represent, and then multiply or divide the fraction accordingly until you get the desired ratio. This would be similar to switching units by cancelling out terms. For the first example, apples to oranges (A/O) = 3/4 and pears to oranges (P/O) = 6/5. In order to get the desired ratio, apples to pears (A/P) you need to divide A/O by P/O so that the O's cancel out and you are left with A/P. This works for multiple ratios too. Might be quicker than writing out a table and I think it's pretty intuitive. What do you think?

Super useful! One thing I did to try to speed up in the last case was to draw an additional column on the right and then write the multiplier in each row to get all adjusted in one go. So starting from the bottom, I multiplied the last row by 5 and the above row by 6 to get the common ratio of 30 (Y10 and Y11), and then the first row by 4 to get 28 (Y9 and Y11). So we have all rows in the same proportion at once. Thanks for the amazing teaching!

I have different method and hope everyone can understand Y8/Y9 = 2/3 Y9/Y11 = 4/5 Y10/Y11 = 5/6 Based on the question, we would want Y8/Y10 = ?? I'll multiple all ratio together while trying to make Y8 as numerator, Y11 as denominator and cancel out Y9, Y11 by putting them on both numerator and denominator Y8/Y9 * Y9/Y11 * Y11/Y10 = 2/3 * 4/5 * 6/5 = 48 / 75 = 16 / 25

Please Sir this method can also be used using the Chain Rule For instance for Question 1=Apple/Pear =Apple/Orange x Orange/Pear 3/4 x 5/6=5/8 For question 2 same method apply Y(8)/Y(10)= Y(8)/Y(9) x Y(9)/Y(11)x Y(11)/ Y(10) 2/3 x 4/5 x 6/5= 16/25 or 16:25

What is the probability of forming the word “ADDS” by picking 4 cards at random and kept in the same order out of 50 cards given with 10 cards having “A”, 10 having “S”, and the remaining 30 having “D” on it?

hi man...a little doubt here in one of the Princeton GRE tests, s^2=64 then s = +8 and -8 also, why is a root of 64 equals only 8 and not -8 as well...what is happening here??
@TheTestedTutor
@TheTestedTutor 4 жыл бұрын
If you see the root sign, that always means positive root. So just +8. If you don't see the sign, just x squared = 64, then there is a +8 and -8 solution. Weird but true!

Great video but I found an easier way I think. Rewrite both in terms of oranges, then substitute in the required ratio. A=3oranges/4 and we have P=6oranges/5. So A/P=(3or/4)*(5/6or)=15/24=5/8. Hope this helps.
@TheTestedTutor

Great tip! But for harder overlapping (like 4 or more sets), subbing could get quite difficult
@mahirlabib4512
@mahirlabib4512 4 жыл бұрын
@@TheTestedTutor I agree! I will keep in mind of your row technique for bigger problems. Subbing can get risky for more than three variables!
