I've always considered myself a Guess Who (and Bachman-Turner Overdrive) fan, but I'd never seen that performance, and that was insane! Bachman's solo was, of course, next level, but the whole band was great! I've always loved Burton Cummings' voice. And they were having so much fun! I loved it.

I am a Canadian in his mid-fifties with a mother who loved music so I grew up on this stuff. I have always considered Randy Bachman the Godfather of Canadian Rock and he blazed a trail for so many Canadian artists who walked in his footsteps in the snow.

The lead singer, Burton Cummings is an amazing vocalist. His solo work is really great. Check out Stand Tall, I'm Scared, Timeless Love, Break It To Them Gently, Your Backyard, and I Will Play a Rhapsody. Guess Who songs are Undone, These Eyes, No Sugar Tonight - New Mother Nature. Cummings cover of When a Man Loves a Woman is outstanding.

The concert had been interrupted by a thunderstorm. The crowd was still there after the storm passed so the concert continued. Randy Bachman (in Winnipeg pronounced Backman) used to go hang out at the music store with Neil Young, staring at the guitars they couldn't afford. Not bad for a bunch of old guys who cut their teeth playing at community club sock hops.

Aside from the rain, thunder and lightning, it was actually pretty dangerous with high winds blowing the towers. The band left the stage for a while and likely would have cancelled if it wasn't their hometown. Guitarist Donnie MacDougall's senior citizen mother stayed and made her ways towards the front of the crowd.
@jethro1963

Aside from Neil Young, Randy was good friends with jazz prodigy Lenny Breau (who had an admirer in Chet Atkins) and the band would be met in Fort William (Thunder Bay) Ontario by their fan Paul Shaffer (David Letterman).

5:42 - The comment about ''the crowd staying'' refers to an hour-long delay caused mid-show by a severe electrical storm. I've been to hundreds of concerts but too young in the early 70s I had to wait for this tour to pass by Montreal to see the Guess Who. Schooled in Rock I knew the repertoire, the history and ''American woman'' is an anthem. But they blew everybody's mind with that extended version and to this day I'll swear it went longer than 14 minutes (the intro itself passing from 90 seconds to 6 minutes.) I beleive the Winnipeg concert was part of the Canada Day celebrations, thus a more reserved crowd. The one I attended looked like the Rio crowd reacting to Rush's YYZ.

I live in Winnipeg and this concert was held in our baseball stadium on June 30th. July 1st is Canada Day - that is why you see so many Canadian flags in the audience. When Burton Cummings said at the beginning of the concert, only Winnipeggers would stay - it is because there was a torrential rainstorm prior to the Guess Who taking the stage. You should really watch the interview with Burton Cummings saying how they wrote American Woman on the stage ad lib. They are amazing!

You guys just popped up on my smart tv tonight for the first time. Thank you for the great reaction to this video. I have suggested this elsewhere on other reaction channels with no results and it was a lot of fun. American Woman was one of my least liked tracks of theirs but when I saw this concert for the first time, I couldn't stop playing it. I think I'm going to have a good time checking out your reactions. My father moved to Canada from the Bristol area in 1929 so I have English roots. Keep playing the good ones. This song used to be the ringtone for my American fiancée... When she found out she -bitched about- objected to the lyrics, saying, _"What do you mean, 'Stay away from me?!'..."_ . So I changed it to "Layla" by Derek and the Dominos. Now when she calls, my phone reminds me that she _"got me on my knees"_ 🙄

The best part of this song is how it was written. In Randy Bachmans own words They were waiting for Randy to get back on stage and the crown grew restless and wanted more so he adlibbed the words.. They went and found a guy making a bootleg copy of that nights concert with his gettoblaster and got a copy of this song and the rest is history.
@BobSoltis1
@BobSoltis1 9 ай бұрын
Nope - It was Burton Cummings who was late getting back to the stage and Randy started playing the riff on his guitar to signal Burton to come back. The crowd was really digging the riff so Burton just started scatting some lyrics. You are right about the bootleg recording though.

Dang Randy looks scruffy and old compared to the last time I saw them play back in 2003 SARS Festival. Love the song and all but wasn't expecting much....boy was I wrong. OMG, that was 🔥🔥🔥wish I was there to see that live. I think I'll be watching that video at least 100 times, since I play guitar and the video had some close up on his hands. I'll be checking the other videos of Canada Week. From a top Canadian bands pov, Rush and The Guess.are awesome Another band on the same level, is Triumph. Hopefully they make your list for this week. Saga, April Wine are those under appreciated bands with some awesome hits as well. There are a ton more that I can name but when it comes to absolute rock classics (in the same vein as American Women) I hope you boys get around to doing a reaction to: The Kings - This beat goes on/Switchin' to Glide Prism - Armageddon April Wine - Roller

Amazing. I had not seen this before. I've always had great respect for Randy Bachman but this just elevated him into the rarefied rock stratosphere for me. Love to see old rockers still rockin' out and still be great at it. Bachman is such a great guitarist and an interesting guy. You should check out his Vinyl Tap podcasts. Burton Cummings is such an underrated lead singer; he had a very good solo career as well. Randy and Burton had some friction over the years but always seem to have totally respected each other. Other Guess Who hits to react to include Undun, No Time, These Eyes, Runnin' Back To Saskatoon, Hand Me Down World, Hang On To Your Life, Share The Land, Albert Flasher, Rain Dance, Bus Rider, Star Baby etc.

That was great. I’d had some sort of internal block when it came to The Guess Who. It seemed somehow like The Rutles, although not as obviously a spoof, more like they were trying to gain fame in reference to The Who or something. I didn’t even know American Woman was theirs. I got the feeling that Lenny Kravitz’s song was not his, but I didn’t know its origins. That’s the great thing about this channel. Lots of learning and great music. Thanks Chris!

I had heard of The Guess Who, but never really heard them. This is something I am going to rectify as this performance was rock solid. I did have a chuckle when Bachman broke the string with the drumstick. I just thought: "that's why we were born with fingers ... for tapping arpeggios". If I was going to be greedy, the only thing in that solo I would have liked is if he used the whammy bar more during the latter sections to make it more sludgy and dirty. Also, what about that bass line holding the solo up? It was perfect. Another great track from Chris the Master.

great clip great rendition og the song! A couple more you may be interested, No sugar tonight/new mother nature. No time Clap for the wolfman Share the land, Albert Flasher Hang on to your life, Sour suite. Intersted where Chris will take this voyage. Appreciate the choices so far. They only let down was the Gordon Lightfoot clip. Loved the song but wish you would have played a younger version of Lightfoot with a bite more power in his voice. over all well done looking forward to the next few days

Years earlier they recorded Live at the Paramount with a 16 minute version that has a similar intro. The whole album is one of my favorite live albums. kzbin.info/www/bejne/iIaYoaqPbMp8as0

Couldn't agree more, this was brilliant. Randy Bachman is often overlooked as being a great guitarist, at least by audiences (not Canadian! we know how great he is), until a performance like this pops up. Great blues and rock guitarist...how about jazz? Check out the GW's Undun, their masterpiece imo. I prefer the studio version for the arrangement. He studied with guitar legend Lenny Breau when they were both teens in Winnipeg and learned some great jazz licks.

Great to see some seminal CANROCK. Considering the substance issues Burton Cummings had in his 30's his voice is remarkable in 2005. I really appreciate Alex comments on the harmonica and it makes me want to hear more....especially reminded by one of your bumpers. Being Thamesmen I really think you could educate today's audience by digging up some video from some other sons of the Thames.....those GREAT souffenders Dr. FEELGOOD!!! Menacing music with dangerous guitar & harp. If you can find some Feelgood with and without Wilko you'd be doing North America a favour. Well done Lads- RM

If you haven't already, you really should check out Burton Cummings solo work. The lyricism is almost as incredible as the vocals. And Randy Bachman was no slouch either. His post Guess Who stuff deserves some deep dives as well. There's *B.T.O* of course, and his little known, but equally amazing, run with *Ironhorse* (Not to be mistaken for the bluegrass band *Iron Horse* from Alabama...though they aren't bad either). Randy was also in the bands *Brave Belt* and *Union.*
