I guess their love story was more lackluster in the show, but I believe that's the point. Romance is a big part of the world, but it's also a big cliche. Besides, if we got more Clace time we wouldn't have as much Malec or the Jordan/Maia/Simon. I think Clary and Jace's love story taking a backseat is the perfect sacrifice to flesh out LITERALLY everything else.

Actually Cassandra Clare is writing a trilogy only for Malec called The Eldest Curses. In the TV show Malec comes too fast and it isn't well developed like in the books. The TV show is like "Yeah, first of all there is a gay love story and than we have Valentine and Sebastian", but in the books Malec is in second place (in the first trilogy even in third placee) and the actual lore comes first. If we compare the disaster that they did in the show with the other characters with Malec, they're not that bad, but Alec and Magnus in the books are better than this discreet representation of them. This is my opinion as a fan of the books that cringed a lot watching the TV series.

Jace was suppose to be THE hottest dude on the show, in the series Alec is the hottest 🤷♀️
@spaceparrot87025 жыл бұрын
The way it was described in the books: Jace is like gold, which is popular because of its outer appeal. Alec is like silver, isnt as popular as gold, but its actually a lot stronger. So its a matter of perspective, Jace used his looks to succeed in battles and stuff too, but Alec didnt really care about vanity, but he could be a lot sexier than Jace if he actually made efforts to follow a tedious beauty routine like Jace does. But in the show Alec s just the hottest, big time.

The most illogical one: Jocelyn DOES NOT DIE IN THE BOOKS. She actually wakes up after all the drama of Jace and Clary being siblings, and immediately tells them they are not, because she remembers her son and the cruelty in him didn't exist in Jace.
@glorianaelizondoz.23736 жыл бұрын
And also, she and Isabelle ended up getting really well in the books. Sure, the begin wasn't so good, but so it was with Alec as well. In the books, they got to a point where a lot of us fans asked Cassandra if Izzy and Clary would be parabatai.
@hannahportzer93196 жыл бұрын
The only reason why Jocelyn died is because Clary is supposed to become/be a hero and in order for someone to become a hero they need to go through adversity. The death of parents is also apart of becoming a true adult. They felt that was something that would push Clary through 2A in a compelling manner. They even asked Cassandra if it was okay and she Approved and even said "it was a cool way to execute Clary's journey as a hero"

1. Actually Matzie is not in the books. She's an invented character like Lydia Branwell. 2. Simon's not turned into a Vampire in the third episode but at the very end or episode seven. 3. In the books it is said that if a mundane drinks from the Mortal Cup they can become a Shadowhunter but the process is dangerous, because many mundanes will die before one is turned into a Shadowhunter. And that's the same in the show. The real difference is that in the show if you have the Mortal Cup you can control demons. 4. Even in the show Jocelyn went to Magnus Bane in order to have Clary's memories of the Shadow world cancelled. 5. In the show Ragnor Fell's skin is not green because in the cooks we don't see him at all. Ragnor only appears in the first episode of Magnus Bane Chronicles and the show runners don't have any rights over those books so they cannot mention or describe any of their characters. They just could do it with Ragnor because he was mentioned in the Mortal Instruments but they had no permission to describe him the way he really looked like.

I’m usually a “the books are better” person but the show holds such a special place in my heart. After the first season you could tell they improved on so much and I think it was a better reflection of the society we live in now especially with all the references to mental health and addiction. The books are amazing, no doubt about it, but Malec is so important to me as not only a fan but a queer fan and I think the show and their casting of Harry and Matt were perfect and their chemistry as well as the chemistry between all the couples was phenomenal. Weird that she didn't mention the physical differences between book malec and tv malec. In the book, Magnus is a lot taller than Alec. And Alec has blue eyes instead of brown. (But I thank the casting directors decided not to stick with the book Malec otherwise we wouldn't have Harry Shum Jr and Matt Daddario in our lives) Which means, the MOVIE malec (Godfrey Gao and Kevin Zegers) was actually more accurate. But the movie sucked so it doesn't really matter anyway..

MalickaNeya And the show didn't say that a human will die if they drink from the cup, the show said that a human has an extremely high chance of dying from it, but will be a shadowhunter if they live (this bothered me: to get the number of new shadowhunters that Valentine has in season 2, he would have nearly had to have all the humans in New York drink from the cup, considering that over two-thirds of the candidates should have died according to their own rules!) This is pretty much the same in the books, aside from the fact that the books say that intense training and preparation help your chances.

But thats why Valentine started looking for the fittest candidates to turn into shadowhunters. So that's why he had so much people, he increased the chances to succesfully turn humans into shadowhunters without the risk of half of them dying.

How dare you call Luke meek! Did you know Valentine set him up to become a werewolf after Luke defied him? In the side novel the Bane Chronicles, Magnus encounters the Circle a short while before Luke was turned. They were trying to hunt down werewolves after Valentine convinced them those were the ones who killed his father. As Luke discovered Valentine was secretly torturing a werewolf child when he entered the room Valentine was in, he rescued the child, scolding Valentine for it and taking it to the mother, letting them free. Magnus thought he misjudged Luke, and that he was probably the only one in the Circle with a heart, but that he wouldn't survive it. As that was when Valentine decided Luke should be taken care off. Luke also fought several times to protect Clary with his pack, and had no problems with shooting Sebastian/Jonathan with a gun, even though he was going to be his stepfather. Luke was a kind man, but he was not meek.

The show itself is a good stand alone show and a pretty good adaptation. It gets the important parts from the books in there, but since it is an adaptation, in my personal opinion, I feel that its ok that the director changed some things. Some tv/movies change so much *cough* Percy Jackson *cough* because they're lazy and/or didn't understand the source material, but you can tell that the director is trying to keep the characters similar to their roots. Also that thing with the mortal cup, They totally say that it can change mundanes into shadowhunters. There's even a scene where they do it. ...Also Malec is amazing btw

The Mortal Cup kills even in the books bc mundanes rarely survive the transformation. Same is explained in the show AND even showed how Valentine uses it to create new shadowhunters. Urg it was so infuriating...and one more thing Catarina is blue, but because she has a job as a nurse she had to hide her warlock's mark, her blue form almost showed on season 3 when they had a party at Lorenzo Ray and Lilith started messing with the laylines

But when someone makes it completely different it upsets us because we think we will finally find one of the rare tv shows and movie that are actually like the books.
@Harpie.6 жыл бұрын
I think that while they changed some things, they still stay rather true to the books. The plot is still happening chronologically, like with how Valentine and Raziel happened, then Jonathon's death, now with Lilith's arc. It's interesting because with the slight deviations as a book reader I am still sometimes shocked. However, I think they go closer to the books in the past two seasons.

I never said that the actor shouldn't play Luke because he is black or anything like that. In fact I think that the actor who plays Luke is doing an amazing job. But that is not the point of my comment above. I am simply saying that if they are showing a picture of green Ragnor and saying how he is diffrent from books, why are they showing the picture of white Luke and not saying anything. And it's ridiculous to say I am racist when I didn't even write the book. Cassie did and the picture in this video of Luke is the proof of that.

I've never watched the show for a few reasons. I only recently read the books, so when I looked up the show, I looked for clips at first. The first one I came across was Alec's wedding to Lydia - which made me super confused - and they were getting married in white. It's the color of mourning, not marriage. The other thing was the ages of the characters. I never watched the show because I figured that there would probably be a lot of changes and I wasn't sure I'd be happy with them. Seeing as how I blew up over the color of Lydia's dress at her marriage, I think it was a good call on my part to just stay away from the TV show.

NicoleGZ, Ultimately, it was a personal decision on my part to stay away from the show because of the reasons I stated above. No, I didn't know what was happening in the story and, frankly, I didn't care. I am not saying the show is bad; I'm saying it's not like the books. I wanted to see the characters I imagined on screen and instead, I got a whole new cast that I wasn't interested in. Everyone has their own preference and I'm not going to put fans of the TV show down for that. The books and TV show are different, which both the video and I pointed out. Doesn't necessarily mean it's a bad thing, but it's not my cup of tea.

Jace is not a soft kind person and Clary is not suposed to be flirting Jace already in the first episode, it is cringy and awfull to see, i just... i can handle the show and if we talk about the looks PLEASEEEE CLARY CAN'T BE TALLER THAN ISABELLE!!!! Alec is supposed to have black hair and blue eyes because is the favorite combination to Magnus and Jace oh please i can't handle Jace, he is suposed to be leon like, with a wild aura, cold and mostly he is suposed to have a athlete body, fibrous and thin like a panther. This felt more like a bashing video, with very sparse attempts to give the show credit. A lot of the aspects of the book were changed to fit the tv show. Luke is a cop because it gives his character something to do and a way for the other characters to find out about the latest issues occurring in New York. The book centered around Clary mostly, so Luke would always show up when it was convenient for her story. It would've been so boring to have him sit in a bookstore doing nothing. The show gave everyone way more screen time (except perhaps Simon and Clary somewhat). Other adaptations like Chairman Meow not existing may be due to the cast having cat allergies, alongside it just being very difficult to require a cat on set anytime Magnus' apartment is used in a scene. At least they make references in the alternate universe episode, which was very funny. Some events are different, but the basic plot remains the same in the series, and happens chronologically for the most part. The few changes that differ usually made sense for the scenarios, and all together the show succeeds in showcasing more than just Clary and character development. They're doing the right things to make a successful show, like using Malec as a focal point for season 1 to gain more viewership.

I like the changes in the movie. because it gave me a little more to grasp on to than the book. also I felt like the book did not give the excitement or drama or challenges that it gave in the T.V show. [shadow hunters]

Thats because the books are not a drama...

Lynn Jordan i totally agree with you. I felt a bit bored while reading the book. The show is much mysterious and unpredictable

i mean am I the only one who thinks making Alec get married and adding Lydia was a really good decision, cause it added depth to Malec. I wish it'd happened in the books. Also Jocelyn's death was one that I liked cause it added depth to Alec's charactar.

this pisses me off, caterinas skin as a warlock is blue but as she works in a MUNDANE hospital she has glamored skin, no human has blue skin

I hate how you say in almost difference "fans of the books were upset about this difference because..." You don't have to repeat that after every entry. There is and always will be outcry for any adaptation when it differs from source material. People are just petty like that. Also, you're so wrong about your entry of Simon's vampirism. How can you say that Simon was more involved in the books when Simon turning early on in the show was just so that he can have a storyline? In book one he doesn't do much at all before and after getting kidnapped.

Book version of Clary is much better.

Also, Simon became a Shadowhunter in the books, and in the show he stayed a vampire.

I originally intended to read the book series before watching the TV show, but I never got around to it before the premiere, so I started watching the show, then I read comments on here that explained how different the two actually are and now, I have gotten to the point where I enjoy the show for what it is and I think I might be better off not reading the books and having expectations of them being the same.

You're not missing anything with the books IMO. I know people will shout and crucify me for saying so, but I honestly couldn't get through the first book. I started watching the series first, thought it was a bit cheesy but stuck with it and now I love it! I tired reading the books after being introduced through the series, and was just so completely annoyed with Clary and tired of being in her head. I tried to stick it through but eventually gave up mid-way. Books aren't untouchable things, and all authors aren't perfect writers. I may not agree with all of the changes, but some were appropriate. Plus people raved about the movie and how much closer it was to the books, and guess what? The movie flopped. There are a lot of things the series does right that the author didn't develop in the book. And considering the show is only what 30-40 mins long each episode there is only but so much you can fit in.

srayj God, thank you. we need more people like you in the comments. book readers are looking to fight people in the comments who like the TV show at all. I've been thinking about reading he books but idek where to get them ( library's around here are kinda small ) and I'm not too sure if I'll like them as much as I'm currently liking the show ( I haven't gotten too far yet ) the idea of the things I hear about the book don't sit well with me...I'm just not sure.

Nooooo you have to read the books if you love the show you will love the books even more because it is a lot more intricate and detailed. I read all the books before I watched the tv show and movies and I still appreciate them all. People are just salty because it's different. It didn't make me hate it, I just think of it as an extension of the books rather than an adaption. Trust me your opinion won't change unless you make it.

srayj I found the first book tough to get through, but I persisted as the story concept itself intrigued me....the books did get better and better with each one and by the finale of the story I was totally hooked! It's well worth reading the books imo. Just push through that first book....you'll be glad you did when you read them!
