People sleep on Russell, loved how despite the illusion of safety he went back into hell and even when struggling with a extremely violent virus he sacrificed himself for his friends
@meatybtz3 ай бұрын
I always felt that Russell was an example of the ability to, perhaps just for a while, to overcome the virus' effects. That a good person, a real good person, not someone who postures that they are good, might react to the virus' effects. He still had the violent impulses. He still struggled to contain them. He realized he wouldn't be able to hold out forever. He was a "good person" and maintained control till the end, even if it was just by his fingernails and died a good person. One of my favorite characters. In some ways it was like hinting that the virus didn't make you evil, it just disregulated your self control. Which is a social commentary saying that those people who fell into violence and evil had that evil inside them all along and the movie used Russell as that contextual foil. Which is internally consistent with other behaviors seen in the movie, such as the hunters internal cooperation or the family waiting in ambush. The crazies were not "randomly" crazy. It was specific in each case. A hidden evil. Something nursed and concealed now exposed through disregulation. Their "true" nature revealed if you will. Romero loved social commentary like that.

Honestly, I think limiting the perspective to just the townsfolk makes the remake a much better watch. The OG isn't bad by any means, but imo it really suffers from having too many plotlines going on at once. Romero should've either focused on just the survivors, or just the military. Both are interesting on their own, but when they get meshed together they detract from one another.
@I.____.....__...__5 ай бұрын
Agreed. They're both good in their own ways, but surprisingly different. I think Romero's version was more about all the propaganda and control that the military and government employ. This one was more of a traditional thriller, but did have some of those aspects in the satellite and the propaganda during the credits.

The infected in The Sadness are 100% completely aware and have full brain function, but their impulse control and morality are completely gone. The water supply plot point is absolutely genius in how realistic it is, and something sort of similar happened to me years ago. I used to live in a building where the water supply was pretty much contaminated due to old tanks and extremely rusty pipes from the 50s which were made with toxic materials that arent used anymore. When I moved in I had no idea about this so I would drink the water normally from the sink. One week all of a sudden people inside my building started getting extremely sick, elderly had to be taken to the hospitals, and I started puking my guts out without warning. Turns out that the terrible manteinance of the water supply made a bacteria show up that got everyone sick in the span of 48 hrs, added to the rust within the pipes becoming toxic and that in contact with water at a certain temperature would release a toxin into the air, which filtered into each flat, making even those who didnt drink the water sick on a lower level but still having diarrhea and other bad symptoms. The building was fortunately cleaned but it took a long time, and its safe to say I never drank water from the pipes again and always kept a window open in case the toxins come back. It seems so stupid, but its insanely truthful to how many building ends up quarantined.

It kinda makes you think what people would be willing to do if the stakes were this high. On one hand, they seem like antagonists because you’re following a main character and usually the soldiers can’t take the risk that your main character might be infected. On the other hand, in real life you’d want this effective “cut off the hand to save the body,” approach if a few million meant the survival of billions. If a soldier was told he had to exterminate a small town, knowing probably a quarter of them are healthy, but if they don’t die there’s a chance our future as a species is over, how would they live with those actions? I always found the idea that in a hopeless situation like this, the heroes seem like villains, was such an interesting and realistic take.

Like in any other movie every military member in the movie would just be some faceless robot that just kills everyone for no reason. This one showed that they were actually people and that they don't actually want to be doing this but thought they were preventing an outbreak, so to save more people basically. So they can be the antagonists without actually being bad, which is a fine balance that a lot of other movies, especially in this genre, do not get right.

Your argument is quite ironic, when precisely this consecutive subordination will eventually turn the individual into a killing machine, incapable of understanding any command other than to point a gun and shoot. The uncomfortable (although known) truth of the military-industrial complex dehumanizing troops exists, regardless of who it is. The reason why the representation of the army in The Crazies was so popular with the American public, as evidenced by the comments on this video, was precisely that: it was not critical of the true consequences of the systematic subordination exerted on soldiers. But hey, what good patriot wants to be truly critical, right? 😉

Am I the only one seeing a connection between this movie and the game "Project Zomboid"? - both are set in the 90s - both are set in a small rural area in the US - In both the movie and the game, the military seals off the infected area without telling anyone inside or outside the perimeter - both have a misterious sickness that turns people crazy - both have the helicopter event from which you have to hide from - both have the overunning of the refugee camp, forcing the military to flee - In the older versions of the game, you had to take care of your blond wife who was injured

This movie is quite good and I really recomend the comicbook tie-ins Image published before the premiere. Each issue is from the point of view of one of the crazies so you get more insight into how the virus works. The desease isn't like the typical zombie virus that kills all the higher functions of the brain or the viruses on _Blackgas, Crossed,_ and _The Sadness_ that shut-down all the impulse control instincts of a person turning them into an increasingly deraged psycho, the virus of _The Crazies_ comicbook is scarier because it starts by just intensifying any mental or emotional problem the infected already has: the guy in the baseball field had a past histoy of paranoia and allucinations so they cameback in full force, he was seeing the people on the game as shadow creatures and things like that; meanwhile the coroner was talking to his dead mother about how he would show her that he could become a doctor and that's why he started doing horrifying operations on random people; and even the hunters have some nuance because the town was descending into chaos and madness when their started to show syntoms so a lot of their early acts of violence where justifyed to the point that the reader could wonder if the hunters were really infected or just suffering from a regular mental breakdown (untill you see the film, in their last scenes those guys were clearly sick)... the comics are an awesome short reading

For anyone who likes this sort of theme as far as infected that still retain skills I’d recommend the retreat series by Craig Dilouis and Stephen knight. It has a similar premise and follows a us army unit that is trying to fight and survive through the us while most of the population is infected with a virus that turns them into bloodthirsty sadistic killers who laugh uncontrollably. It’s a dark story and very graphic with the details but it’s also really intense following this unit that is trying to keep the wheels on the bus while they change goals after each one is shown to be already gone when they reach it.

this movie is very underrated... I did enjoy it when first watched it some time ago, (more than once even) wanted to studied the "zombies" movements and behavior patterns and Russell's whole character, from start to finish was was best, my favorite character and you really felt for him- when he realizes he's infected but asked if he could still walk with them while he's still "him" with the sorrow and regret in his expression... and how he sacrifices himself to distract the military personal so the other two could escape.
@FlamingNinjaBoi5 ай бұрын
First watched this as a teenager and it's one of my all-time favorite horrors. The concepts at play are just so unique, even in comparison to today. As you stated, 'zombies that don't necessarily want to eat you, but just want to kill you, are terrifying'. Especially since they have cognitive capabilities, can use tools, weapons, etc. Always wished it got a sequel in that next city. The only two people that know what's about to happen trying to salvage the situation in a city with a much larger population and a lot more potential battlegrounds against The Crazies. I think it could have been great.

The real drawback of small towns liket his one is the lack of services, my husband lived in a tiny village in New Mexico for a few years, and one of the most frustrating things was a lack of emergency services. Yes, there was a fire station, but the police force was maybe 4 or 5 people and there was no emergency medical care. Things happened up there all the time and no one ever knew; there were even people in the bigger city over the mountain that didn't even know there was a village up there. It's really, really isolating, and I could see something like this happening there, but with the mine everyone worked in instead of a plane crash. If you want the peace of small town living without everyone knowing your business, you'd love a place with around 10k people. I grew up in a town of about 12k, and it was big enough to have just about everything, but I very rarely knew people I saw on the street.

This movie honestly is a tamer depiction of how people who've turned crazy will act. This movie reminded me of a comic series I've read two years ago, I think it was called Crossed, where the crazy people there aren't just killers they do _anything_ that's depraved onto others or to themselves. The infection works when the infected people infect others with their bodily fluids (saliva, blood, piss, ect.). They are smart enough to use that knowledge to coat their weapons - including bullets - with it to infect people. They engage in torture, not just physical but also mental before they kill their prey, and will use them to also lure more people to be slaughtered. The comics are, obviously, very graphic, so much so that even the people who are into gore in movies and shows will understand why this series _shouldn't_ and _neither will be_ adapted.

6:25 I lived in a small town about this size in 2020, when our little sickness kicked off. I know it's not the same at all, but it _kiiiiinda_ is? Anyway, it took 2 years for any cases to actually get to our town due to the lockdowns and restrictions. I had daydreams during the inital stages that this was gonna flip to something much worse (I'm sure everyone did at least once!) and thought about what would happen to the tiny country town if it was, say, zombies. If it started there, it would be hard to contain, honestly. People just walk into each other's houses if they know them. People can't be missing for more than a day or two before people start actively looking around, and everyone gathers at a select few places to mingle. If it started in the big city, though? *Nothing!* I bet nothing. Country towns, especially here in Australia, would be relatively fine. Way too much time to prepare for a place like that to fall. Way too many resources there to fail, imo. Cities are death traps, though. They could work for a short time, but the numbers of Zs would quickly outweigh resources.
@elishafollet53475 ай бұрын
Technically speaking if a zombie outbreak that is as bad as what is shown in films happens in a city you wouldn't have to worry to much about resources because the vast majority of the folks inside would already be dead/turned tho the number of zombies will still be an issue for a while

Food for thought here… So I’m from Iowa and I’m proud to say I know of a town that hovers around the 1000 people mark (Milo Iowa) which is SE Warren county if you’re interested, and I’ve considered what may happen if the “crazies event” happened to my wife’s home town. It’s a great town but it’s a 4 way town meaning you got 4 ways in and 4 ways out. Nearest military large presence would probably be Camp Dodge in Johnston, and supported from my old unit in Knoxville Iowa and Oskaloosa (3654, 3655 maintenance units) Barricades on N E S W directions with Indianola being the main town about 10-15 minutes North and West In Milo I’ll say it’s a gun ratio of maybe 3 guns to 1 person. With plenty of hunters and farmers (gun enthusiasts) It’s an agricultural town for sure with a local style restaurant, 1 gas station, a public library, grade school, and a few churches… and of course one mechanic shed. Right off the bat I’d say the churches would be redemption centers for gathering people and the grade school would probably be the “prison” since the HS is in Lacona. Heavy military presence could be established in 24 hours and an effective “wall” could encircle the town pretty quick. I’d be curious to see what the results of the town being hit with some like this would be but the feed water from the town is off of the Des Moines pipes. So…. Curious!!!
