I purchased my first Rolex on impulse. I walked into a AD at the Roosevelt Field Mall (New York) two weeks before this Christmas and casually mentioned what I was looking for. I was planning on buying a Deep Sea, but not just yet. The lady walked away and to my surprise, a minute later came back with a black face DS 126660. Needless to say, I purchased it and here I am 6 months later and could not be more happy. You hit on the head Oisin. A watch, never mind a 14 K watch, has no practical purpose. Clocks are everywhere. Cheap watches are even more common. But I purchased mine because I love the engineering and craftsmanship, and yeah - a bit of exclusivity. Am I a snob? You bet. Love the channel. Keep up the good work.

As one who grew up in poverty and has worked himself into the upper middle class I appreciate the classes. It keeps me motivated to achieve more. Though I’m more of Omega/Rolex budget, own both, I’ve walked into dealers to try on Patek and Richard Mille and do not feel uncomfortable one bit. It’s just more inspiration. I will own a Patek one day. I also ride a a Harley and love Lynard Skynard. 😂 Very good content. Watched your last two videos and you’re two for two. Subscribed.

I remember a few years back watching a food network "star" on one of their programs mentioning how he was looking at a person's watch and how he made fun of it to another snob that the watch wasn't an "automatic" or a "mechanical" but a "quartz" movement watch. I lost respect for that person. He acted like he was so much "above" that person. Really disgusting.

I think I know exactly what scene/person you are talking about. I think he said something about looking at someones watch to see if the second sweep was "smooth" or if it ticked. I often do the same thing. If someone has an automatic watch I might start a conversation because we are both probably interested in watches, but if its not, then I don't and I assume they don't know any better or they just don't care about watches (ex. Bill Gates wears a sub $100 Casio diver). I know there are amazing quartz watches out there (some Grand Seikos for example) but if someone really likes watches and knows what they are talking about then they will most likely wear an automatic, regardless of the price point. The 'star' wouldn't say something condescending to the person, he is just using the observation to silently inform himself that the other person isn't 'in the know' when it comes to watches. Also, if you watch his program, you will see that he is an anti-snob when it comes to his profession. He eschews trendy, expensive tools over on-hand devices. He is very practical and knows seeks to share his knowledge. I don't particularly like the 'star' you are referring to or his show(s) but I do respect him because he is very knowledgeable about food and his (original) show is science based and devoid of the usual tropes. I could be totally wrong and he could be a huge jerk, but I don't think so.

When you buy expensive watches your buying the whole experience champagne etc. I'm lucky enough to have a Rolexs and tudors and I always get dressed up as it makes the experience better. I also own swatch watches and can walk in with shorts and t shirt on and no one in the store cares. It's all about knowing what your buying and enjoying the experience. It's not snobbery it's just manners.

I appreciate your honesty ! As long as you don't treat other people badly there is nothing to be ashamed of, if you are rich and wealthy ! It is the personality and your character that makes you Human Being, not your money ! But, on the other side, there is jealousy ! If you show your good taste, your appreciation of fine things, your passion for art and craft by having a luxury watch, a nice pen, a suit... then people start thinking of you as of a snob, without knowing how hard you work and what else you gave up to pursue your passion. Another Very Intelligent Post. Like me, You have an Intrinsic Understanding of Snobbery because you're A Celt! I think it's important, however to appreciate the Nuances of Categories. There IS A Difference between Discernment, Exclusivity & Snobbery. Someone who can differentiate between Châteux Cardboard & Château Neuf Du Pâpe or an Omega 321 & 861 handwound mechanical chronograph movement has Discernment. Exclusivity whether of Viticultur or Horology is usually determined by money. Everything you said is true about watch snobbery. Great insight. Owning and wearing a Rolex or Patek Philippe or a few other brands is a status symbol. Like driving a Porsche, Audi, Rolls Royce or Bentley. And snobbery continues into other forms like Real Estate, travel and clothes. And like men, women enjoy their designer hand bags like men enjoy watches. Take for example, the Hermes Birkin bag. Like the Daytona of watches, these bags can cost at least $10,000 or more and are very hard to get. Louis Vitton is up there as well as Gucci.

Great video. I’m not the least bit rich but I’ve always loved watches and have a modest collection for the exact reasons you explained. Most people assume I’m part of that “1st class”. People make assumptions about me that aren’t actually correct. I think they assume I’m a snob or wealthy. There is a difference between snob and enthusiast. Snobbery is always a sign of insecurity, especially for those who don't have anything as a person but material things around them. I don't buy brands not because it's unaffordable but simply because I don't pay for someone's tag to brand myself. Especially when some ugly things are sold based on fake scarcity.

Really great post. This concept extends to lots of things. Interesting that you brought up Apple Watch. I have the same snobbery with regard to that because I enjoy and know luxury time pieces. I don't want a timepiece that everyone else has. But, interestingly, when it comes to the iPhone, AirPods, iPad, or laptop, I'm an Apple snob because the whole Apple un-boxing experience is superior to anything else. And the products live up to the un-boxing experience. I suspect that anyone that hasn't yet experienced that would call me a snob until they experience it for the first time. It's not snobbery to appreciate and pay for craftsmanship, quality, or luxury. That's just being an aficionado and something anyone can become if they have the passion. It becomes snobbery when you judge others based on what they can appreciate or afford. That doesn't belong in the watch world...or anywhere.

Great thought provoking content. Rolex jealously guards it’s luxury status and rightly so. I bought a Datejust recently and the Sales woman was telling me in the AD that they no longer offer any zero percent interest deals or discounts. So Rolex want you to be the person that can drop 100% of the watch’s full retail price in one go right there and then. They don’t want just anybody with a credit card to swing by and leave with their product on their wrist. Make of this what you will - it could be seen as snobbery or just brand protection. They are gunning for the Patek market after all and if you buy a Rolex you’d like the assurance of that kind of aspiration protecting your investment. Also, Paul Thorpe an ex Dealer and watch expert was sitting with another seasoned dealer doing a live Q&A and they mentioned how the ultra ultra rich guy would just walk in through the door wearing just jeans and a leather jacket then drop eye watering amounts on the highest end pieces without a second thought. So the crazy luxury watch world we find ourselves in is a very broad church indeed.

Snobbery and discriminating taste are not the same thing. Snobbery is when you are a guest at someone's home and you refuse to drink the sub-par wine they offer you, if not secretly. Discriminating tastes would be to enjoy the sub-par wine as not to offend your host.

There are many reasons why people go out to buy watches. Luxury watches are about luxury, so it shouldn't surprise anyone when a brand like Rolex caters to a certain degree of "snobishness". Personally, I don't think the desire for the luxury of a Rolex and the experiencing of buying one is snobbish. Judging someone for not wearing one is. Of course, if you are like me and you collect watches, not for luxury, but the enjoyment of the history and craftsmanship of a watch, then there is likely to be some degree of conflict with people who are out for fashion or luxury. Snobbery has a very cultural connotation. If you walk into a Rolex store looking like a slob, then you are the one being a snob. The same is true the other way around. If you walk into Walmart in a 10,000 dollar suit wearing a 10,000 dollar watch and parading about like you are the king of the world, then you are also being a snob. Rolex makes a number of watches with a huge history and outstanding level of craftsmanship that I would love to own. Should I ever have the pleasure of purchasing one, I am perfectly able to act the part even though it isn't my cup of tea. BTW I personally engage in Russian watch collecting so if you ever turn up rabbitting on about how rubbish Russian watches are, don't get mad at me if I call you out for being a snob.

Great post that I enjoyed very much, but I think the definition of a snob is someone who looks down on a person they regard as being of a lower social standing. I don't think you do this at all. You don't look down on someone who buys cheap watch - you enjoy fine watches for what they are which is an entirely different thing. And you appreciate how fortunate you are. @Angelo Soulas Ha! I actually have a 1989 Vostok Mini Komanderskie naval watch with a gorgeous teal-blue sunray dial that my husband gave me. He bought it himself from an American military officer who was in Berlin when the Wall came down, crossed over into East Germany to buy a few souvenirs, and decided later to sell some of them. It’s probably not valuable, and the bezel is not even uni-directional, so I definitely wouldn’t trust it for actual diving, but it’s beautiful in my eyes, has sentimental value since it was a gift from my husband, and has a good story behind it. So far, no one has recognized it when I’ve worn it out and about - at least, no one who has commented on it to me. I hope it doesn’t “scare” anyone who does recognize it!

I own a number of Rolex watches and am quite an enthusiast. On occasions a conversation on Rolex arises and I go nuts with excitement and start talking about my collection. A watch’s function is to tell the time is it not... If a sub says it’s 3.15 and a g shock says it’s 3.15 and your cell phone says it’s 3.15 is it not 3.15? We all look at someone’s watch as we believe it says something about them as does their clothes, sunglasses and car. Sometimes we get it right sometimes not. Never judge a book by its cover.

From an outsider looking in, if it has stainless or titanium case it more less in an abstract way it can get a pass as a tool watch. The analog is chisels or kitchen knives from Japan. Some cost 10,000 of K as they are hand forged using 1000 year old technical to pound out the impurities of the tamahagane steel. Others use very expansive super stainlesses like ZPM-189 other just use simple high carbon or basic VG10 at end of day if you use it, it's more or less a tool. Anything adored with precious stones or metal is ceremonial and not a tool even if it's a watch or sword. e.g. With Patek a 7118/1a - Nautilus is a tool watch the nearly identical 7118/1200A is not

I think a lot of people refer to snobbery but actually mean people being jerks. I shocked a person when I complemented their Swatch while wearing my Omega seamaster. A lot of people throw on a Rolex sub and think they are the king and look down at the "inferior" people with a Seiko or whatever... they are jerks. I love watches for the art and not for the status. That said, I expect to be treated at a certain level buying an Omega versus a regular Seiko. I agree on that for sure.

I like knowing that some people who wear Rolex like to sport it but truly cant afford it. They clean out their bank account or max out a card yet I have an Aquaracer, a Hamilton, several Seikos and so on yet I can afford any Rolex without a sweat. I love them but just haven't gotten to the point where I want to take that leap yet. When a guy walks into an AD and buys a 10k to 15k Rolex as a gift and doesn't even give it much thought then that impresses me. I generally have no problem dropping 25k to 30k on a Harley Davidson but thats just my passion. Maybe one day ill move to the upper tier.

I completely agree with you on wine. I will invariably choose a beer over the "house" wine. Is that being a wine snob? Not if I don't put down the house wine to the host.

Getting ignored by an AD based on how you are dressed is not snobbery. In some cases it’s discrimination and possibly even racial profiling. Let’s call it what it is.

This video is so spot on, local AD's where I am are not upscale enough, they generally don't even have a place to sit (you are just standing at the counter). Big turn off. If I am going to spend, 5/15/30k on a watch, I want a relaxed, smooth, comfortable experience. Otherwise I would just buy online or rock a G-Shock.

I agree that understanding and keeping high standards is appropriate in many fields, like watches. I think the snobbery comes in when you treat people with distain because they don't share your particular passions, or have less knowledge and investment in something. I don't look down on people because they know less about watches them I do. There are many people who know more than me.

I love my Rolex Sub. I acknowledge that as a watch snob, I have difficulty thinking about buying an Omega or a Tudor. I know they are great watches, at least as good as a Rolex, but I bought my Rolex because my Tudor Sub didn't say Rolex on the dial. Snob? Mea Culpa. BTW, I wouldn't be caught dead wearing an Apple watch. It is the antithesis of what I think about watches, what they represent, et al. I've been able to get into high end dealers, Rolex, etc, by flashing my Rolex Sub. I don't dress like a bum in the first place, so when I make sure they see my Sub, I've not been let into any dealer.

Leaving this comment not having scrolled down so maybe someone already made this point Agree for the most part on the paying for the experience not just the product.. judging book by the cover argument.. walking past a Madison Ave boutique gestured to the guard "are you open?" @ which point he nodded "for you, sir, we are". I was wearing a suit (hedge funder), I wonder what racial/socieconomic prejudices/biases the door guards have when reading the person to grant entry or not. In NYC where I live wealth is often stealthy, an AD or an exotic car dealership or any luxury lifestyle retailer should not make a blanket judgment b/c never know a young tech CEO who just IPOed or had a 9 figure exit/liquidity event in a tee jeans & sneakers could be the customer. An experienced sales professional should be able to make those decisions in split second, since many three piece types wonder in to window shop & leave empty handed.

I love how mechanical watches and how there engineered but I use a quarts Hamilton khaki for anything I need to be accurate with not saying mechanical are inaccurate but quartz movements are more likely to be bang on I also love solar technology no place for snobs there uneducated in horology in my opinion

Can’t go wrong with Rolex as long as you like the watch. Movements are great and mostly very durable. Many other makes of snob value are lacking in the updated movement as they do not compare with Rolex in this respect. Omega watches were a little lacking in the movements a decade back but are now seriously Rolex standard or better. Up your game Rolex or watch out, Skydweller excluded as it is a genius design.
