Frankly it all sounded pretty plausible. I've heard separately that crowns and hands for some reason are really tricky and that there are very few suppliers for them. Id be stunned if Rolex were not producing watches they could (although one could quibble over their chosen product mix - less lady datejusts would make people happy). I think the biggest issue would be rolex selling direct to consumers - I wonder what approach would they take - first come first served or preferred customer?

Rolex is just applying their metric/limit to the quantity produced. The thing about quality and quantity is a joke with todays manufacturing technology. It's like a parent saying how wonderful their child is when the child is a known killer. Ever wonder why many low production cars use fiber glass bodies rather than stamped steal? The stamper costs big $$ dollars to produce, higher production quantity is needed to recover the initial investment. Made by hand is a another way of saying we can't justify the cost of setting up production or we won't dilute the perceived value, image/prestige, of the product with higher volume.

There is no way i buy the fact they are not restricting supply. Things radically changed at the beginning of 2018. No coincidence. In 2017 dealer cases were full and you could buy almost anything, anytime. What changed? C’mon.

No. Rolex is much more like Ferrari. Ferrari sell the most supercars. Their cars are not the fastest. They don't sell the most expensive cars, and nowhere as crazy as Koenigsegg, and nowhere as flashy as Lamborghini. But their name is the most well known, and they are worth more than any other luxury sports car brand. They certainly don't go into the super technical stuff, like carbon chassis, giant aero wings, because they understand it's an experience to be had mostly on the road. Rolex on the hand is also the most well known watch brand. The watches are nowhere as expensive as AP/PP/VC, nor as complicated. Not as bling as an AP, not as ridiculously exotic as a RM. But Rolexes are the best at giving the essential luxury sports watch experience.
