One of the hardest days of my life was watching the final concert…and not sure if anyone realized this…they closed with this tune because the last lyrics ever sang on stage was “disappointing you is getting me down” the whole song was an apology to the fact he was on his way out. I bought Trouble At The Henhouse the day it released. Ahead By A Century immediately became my favourite Hip song ever. When they played it as their last song ever, for some reason I felt honoured, like they were doing it for me. And I bawled like a baby. . .
@NoviJimB2 жыл бұрын
A friend of mine was a HUGE Hip fan (his name is Hugh, so 'HUGE' is perfect). He went to see them play whenever they were playing anywhere within a couple of hundred miles or so of metro Detroit. He kept count, and I know he was well over 100 shows. He passed away on New Years Day. I've always played this song in standard tuning and 'cheated', so I decided to learn it properly in that open tuning. I have it down, but my voice is still a bit nasally from getting over a bad cold. I'll be doing my own solo version of it very soon for Hugh, with a little bit of extra riffing at the beginning on that open D chord.

People who ask why aren't these guys big in the US just don't get it. They are truly and utterly a Canadian band. They represent the pathetic sliver of genuine Canadian culture that still exists in a country dominated by a massive cultural juggernaut to the south. They write songs about Canada and our shared experience and they rarely pander to American audiences. Fifty Mission Cap, Bobcaygeon, Wheat Kings, Courage, At the 100th Meridian and many more of their songs are about Canadians and Canada. They are just for you Canada and that's an incredibly rare gift. Don't question it.
@hewttehdewb10 жыл бұрын
My beef with them not being big in the U.S. is more about how, we'll get blamed for Bieber, Celine Dion, Bryan Adams, when that's U.S.''s fault! They could have picked good music to import, they chose to ignore that Hip, Matt Good, Smalls, and so many other amazing Canadian bands. Also, I just feel saddened that there are areas in the world that haven't gotten to hear a Gordie Story!

Here is my Hip story. In the mid-90's in Erie, PA, I discovered I could get FM96 out of London on the radio. Anyway, heard this song one time that I never heard before about some guy who won the Leafs the Cup and they didn't win another until 1962. Being a hockey fan growing up watching Hockey Night in Canada (again out of Ch. 10 in London), I was like - this is great. I thought I never saw someone say that before. Singing about hockey. That's outstanding, So I jumped right in and started my love of the Hip as much as an American guy could. Was so excited to see them both times they came to Erie. Not sure why I felt compelled to post this now but there it is. What a ride!

How did these guys not take off after "Grace, Too" on Saturday Night Live? One of the best SNL performances I've ever seen (for the first time yesterday). Used to own a cd shop on University Wisconsin campus in the early 90's...was playing "Trouble at the Henhouse", and in walked a drop-dead Canadian girl, who approached me and gave me a kiss on the cheek in appreciation of having the Hip on the house stereo. Became aware of Canada's love for this band at that moment. Have since come to know this is (was) one of the best bands in the world. Period. The Tragically Hip ruled rock and never got the attention deserved given they did have the visual noise to market them. They were poets with instruments, especially when they rock. It's sweet they finally found fame via this heartfelt song. Now let's rock!

I just watched the final episode of "Anne with an E". The series is extremely brilliant, inspired and mesmerizing. The photography is very artistic, the screenplay is so brilliant that I would like to shake the hands of whoever wrote it. The series began with a beautiful story that unfolded into an epos. It is the story of a very brave and special young girl, an orphan that was bullied but managed to overcome extreme challenges through her love for language, her dreamy nature and the brave visions she had of herself. It is an ode to the weird, the weak, the unfortunate that finally overcome and triumph. So eloquent, so elegant, so elating. I will not go into details because I don't want to spoil the series for anyone. I hope there will be a season four. The final episode made me go through all possible and different kinds of devastating, desperate, elevating, romantic and ecstatic emotions that a human being can have. "Anne with and E" is a work of art. A true masterpiece. From screenplay to directing, to acting. Unfortunately, I just found out that the show was cancelled. That is often the fate of qualitative works in the superficial world that we live in. Everything depends on bucks. I can only thank the authors who did fulfil all the promises the show made, they gave the audience closure and what a closure it was!

I remember when the video first came out and started getting rotation on MuchMusic. I knew it was special then, both the song and the video. It made me stop dead in my tracks. Got the VHS ready, hit record at the right moment. Stop, rewind, play. Stop, rewind, play. Stop, rewind, play.

I am stunned by that news. I'm a Yank, and a huge fan since '94. Always hoped they would be more appreciated in the States, but it never happened. Oh well, that's everyones' loss down here. Keep fightin' Gord, we need you and the band around for a few more decades anyway. You Canadians are very lucky to claim them as yours.

Sadly, I’m a little behind but just finished watching the last episode of Anne with an E last night with my husband, on Netflix. Every time we watched an episode I was haunted by the fantastic opening song by The Tragically Hip. So I decided to look it up because I loved the music. Now I’m deeply saddened about the death of Gorden and the ending of Anne with an E. I definitely am going to search for the CD by Tragically Hip. Just love their music. It’s really unfair how some really great bands don’t become internationally famous. I have a heavy heart for the ending of Anne with an E and the passing of a brilliant artist in The Tragically Hip band. I’m 72 yrs old, and life can be so unfair. At least we can still listen to the great music. RIP

Being of the age to appreciate the imagery presented by the video director throughout, I am most struck by the monochrome image of 'the back of Dad's head' from the perspective of the back seat in an Oldsmobile land yacht @ 1:16 Terrific song. This was the first song I had truly enjoyed from The Hip (given my young age at the time) and introduced me to their huge library of successful singles on the airwaves from beforehand. Such a sountrack for this country. I personally was so happy this was their finale song last night, that and incredibly sad because I knew it was the end. What an incredible group, what an incredible night.

I'm already missing The Tragically Hip... I know it's premature. I just managed to take things for granted I guess. I always imagined my kids would grow up taking in shows with me, at least once or twice. not to mention, the countless memories involving Hip music, which will obviously still take place. Point being, I'm saddened. Tragically Hip is Canada's band. Peace.
