This is definitely one of the best custom Oliver's I've seen. Two thumbs up! Personally, as troublesome as smoke units can be, they really add so much life to models and are a must if possible on all model steam locomotives. BTW, this is just my tip I did with my models, but I recommend using a pin connector for the LED lamp - cut the wires, and solder each of the ends to a male and female pin connector, so you can unplug and replug when you need to. It's a bit tricky, but trust me it saves a lot of headaches later.
@TheTrainModeller
@TheTrainModeller Жыл бұрын
I wholeheartedly agree. I love using the smoke units and will go through the pain to get them to work :D That's a great tip about the LEDs, I'm definitely going to try some pin connectors. It's just about making them small enough to go through the hole in the running board that is the problem D:

One thing to be aware of is to try to spray 1 or 2 light coats to start with and avoid starting the spray on the model you're painting. To further clarify on this is that you should start spraying a few inches from one end of the model and work your way across the surface. Starting to spray immediately on the surface can lead to paint running and leave uneven coats with some areas being more wet than others. Think of it as reading a book, but moving a spray can from right to left

This is incredibly good advice and I'll keep this in mind for future characters I spray. Thank you very much :)

Those 3D printed body shells of the engines shown in the model series are really accurate to what was seen. However since Shapeways has closed its doors, this is gonna be complicated for every Thomas modeler who were just getting into custom models. Also for the returnee renders in the Brenner era, I think this is due to the fact that since Nitrogen Studios used to have the TVS models on display while doing the CGI Series so they can use them as references to render them accurately, I believe ever since they gave a majority of them to Japan when the series switched animation studios, Arc's team weren't given access to them and instead used some pictures (some if not all were pretty bad quality pics) to render them. Oliver being especially one of them.
@TheTrainModeller

Yep I think you're probably right there. Hopefully more users will be able to provide 3D printing services. I've been considering opening up mine too once I've got my 3D printer up and running again.

I've used the transparent waterslide paper, it's meant to be used on white surfaces. Basically the problem is home printers do not have white ink, the rely on the white paper and the absence of ink to show white. Professional waterslide decals are printed on systems with white ink. So if you ever do Harold the helicopter, you can use the waterslide no problem lol.

@ZeldaTheSwordsman

Hornby pierced Oliver's forehead to avoid needing to alter how the railing connected. Hornby's Oliver model was made from an existing GWR 14xx tooling, and on a non-demi-anthropomorphized 14xx, the handrail is attached to the front of the smokebox (just above the door)... exactly where Oliver's forehead would be. Ahh, the Bachmann Oliver. "Has it been stretched to 'fix' the scaling problems?" Yes, yes it has. I'm fairly certain that the modern Bachmann models starting with Rosie have used the show CGI models to make their CAD files. Great if the CGI model is good like Rosie's and most of the narrow gauge engines... not so much if it has substantial flaws like Oliver's does. But of course, unlike CGI models, Bachmann's physical models have to be able to accommodate real motors and eye mechanisms (and that stupid circuit board). And, working from the CGI model, the best they could do was stretch it. That makes Oliver yet another instance of characters getting screwed by Bachmann being forced to work from flawed reference material (and Gullane/Hit/Mattel looking at the result and saying "Good enough"). Something that has been a curse plaguing the Bachmann range from the start: The original OO scale Thomas, Percy, and James suck as bad as they do because the Bachmann team's inexperience with Thomas was compounded by them being forced to reference the characters from the Gullane stock artwork instead of the actual show models. Wouldn't have happened if Britt Allcroft was still in control (just ask Hornby), but alas. Bachmann Oliver kinda feels like he might have been an unnecessary part of this process, given 1. you already had the chassis and mechanism of your original custom Oliver to work with, and 2. the modifications you had to make to render his chassis suitable. How does the probably-Airfix/Dappol chassis compare proportion-wise to your modified Bachmann chassis? How hard did you kick yourself over not just getting existing generic GWR shirtbutton logo decals in the first place? I wonder how feasible it would be to set the lamp irons up as power connection points (or install power connection points in the running board below) to allow modular-yet-functional lamp mounting. That's an idea that's been rattling around in my head for... what, sixteen years now? In any case, you did a great job on Oliver. He looks simply fantastic.

Tbh the Bachman Oliver isn’t bad because of it being a bad model. It’s a good model based on a bad model.
