Just back from a trip to Japan. As an engineer, I’m fascinated by the inherent flexibility of their timber buildings… and the way the joints enable quick disassembly/assembly for relocation. I took a *lot* of photos of one of their largest shrines, simply sitting on flat footing stones.

I do volunteer building in the Philippines and it's great to experience building materials and practices in other cultures and work with the locals learning their methods. Well done SBC. Have to say we are very blessed by variety of tools and materials in the Big Green Shed in Oz (and NZ). As an example of different culture and economies, you can buy a single welding rod in the Philippines if that's all you need!

Very inspiring. I’ve done a lot of DIY to my houses in Australia over the years but something like this I’ve always felt was beyond my capabilities. In a few months I’m planning on returning to Japan and doing something similar to Nikita. I love the way she is being supported in the community. I hope I can find somewhere similar that will welcome a much older Australian woman with limited nihongo ability. Where abouts in Shiga is Nikita? I’d really like to meet and help her if I can.

Hey Scott! Please respond with you thoughts and input; This is in no way a diss or or hate. I'm a big fan of your work. You are very precise and skilled in your work and I admire the care you put into it - In this project you time and time again admire the traditional Japanese workmanship, how do you view your own contribution to this particular project, coming as an "outsider" with different views on how a problem or project should be handled or mended compared to and in respect with the Japanese traditional way of doing things. Especially since Japanese wood craft generally is in such high regards in the wood working community. Your view of it all together with your personal contribution would be very appreciated 🙏🙏

This was very interesting. I live in Japan and when I had my bathroom installed on the ground floor of my house, the builders created a substantial concrete base to support the bath which I thought was a bit OTT. So I am suspicious of the safety of having an upstairs bath supported by wooden beams in an old house such as when an earthquake shakes the house.
