Scott, you are a builder....some would say an artist. You are using all your tools and knowledge to improve the place you are going to live for a long time. After all you have been through, now isn't the time to cut corners on what is behind the walls. You're making your house cooler, warmer, quieter, and using less energy over time. The money now will comeback in energy bills later. I'm not in NZ so i'm not sure where you can cut back to save a few bucks, but if you start making different decisions about your house envelope now you are going to think about it forever. Jess you are the glue that keeps the channel together, I don't think you see yourself that way because you aren't on screen all the time but you are just as vital to the SBC journey as he is. I hope you both have a great holiday. Here's to 1/3 of a piece of your window jam.😀

Your videos have been a huge inspiration and a great guide book on how to do things :) we appreciate all your hard work, time and effort. It’s also been nice knowing that renovation fatigue both mentally and financially isn’t something that only we have experienced haha thanks for being awesome. Merry Christmas

I then went and watched all the previous videos and now watch religiously whenever a new video is live, also I love NZ so that helps. I’ve learnt heaps about carpentry and actually feel weirdly like you’re my friends. Strange isn’t it. The husband and I will be doing a lap of the South Island in June so may run into you at The Dog’s Bone. I hope you have some well deserved rest over the next couple of weeks. Love from Poland. I went through a renovation of a 25-year-old house that took well over a year, but the difference is I was not doing it myself, yet I understand how frustrating and exhausting it feels, for example "not having a kitchen" for a few months. I had a moment in fall where the house was basically split in two with foil to keep the dust out and we had to cook stuff on a gas stove in the garden (which was a big puddle of mud from digger tracks as we had to dig out and fix the hydro insulation of the foundation as well :D) to just heat some soup :D I've been watching every one of your videos for the past year and just love the positive vibes, the passion for the tools and the process and also your honesty and being open on how it really is :D You'd think that watching someone in New Zealand while sitting across the globe in Poland may be unrelatable but it's quite the opposite! All the best for the holidays to you two!

Scott, when I glue a simple mitre joint the way you did, I first put a layer of glue, CA or PVA, on the halves and let it dry without assembly. This will soak in and prep the joint. Then glue the joint as you did, but always put kitchen greaseproof paper underneath! You'll get some very impressively strong joints for this "lazy" type of joinery!

I use the liner from cereal packets as it is a very non stick surface ( that is after the gannets have chomped the contents). The finishing always takes longer and costs more than expected which is why builders homes always look unfinished; the big work is done just the finishing.

With inspiration from this channel, and some others as well, last year I started my renovation project. I purchased a home that was destroyed by it's previous tenants, and have been doing a full remodel of the whole interior. My entire goal was to do all the work by myself, and friends, to fully involve myself with all aspects of building a home. Electrical, hvac, drywall, plumbing, carpentry, you name it. For a first home it's been a daunting task, and I haven't really been this nervous in a long time. I am also realizing how expensive renovation is, my financial situation is getting very tight as I near the finish line. I'm super close to being able to move in, but there's just a giant laundry list of small items I need to constantly attack to get it done. It's been very overwhelming the past few weeks, and just today I had a mini panic attack like I wasn't going to finish in time and lose the house. But after watching your video, I realize that I have plenty of time. Just hearing you say "have a rest" snapped me out of it, and made me realize I just need to focus on relaxing for a week. I need to recharge, and that's okay! It was truly helpful to hear that from someone in a similar situation. I've also been super picky like you said, and need to narrow the focus down to just getting the project complete. With a little break, and a more focused and upbeat attitude, I'll be moved in before I even know it! With channels like yours, it makes my impossible mission of building a home without hiring contractors actually possible. I could never have afforded this without doing the work myself. Thanks so much, it's such a blessing to hear so many of the same problems and road blocks are prevalent in your projects as well. It makes me feel as it's part of the normal process, and not some outlier who has all these issues where everyone else is just smooth sailing. I hope you have a happy holidays, and a wonderful new year!

So many videos have really resonated with us and without knowing it you've had a positive impact on our lives. Hi Scott. Little tip if you ever get in a muddle with the mitre glue again… hold each piece of timber with either hand at least 12” away from the joint and pivot the trim from side to side keeping it flat on the table… that should break the glue away from the table… I have this on good authority from a mate who often makes this mistake 👀

Scott... I believe the missing piece of the CA glue miter puzzle is accelerant. I grew up building balsa model airplanes and used a ton of CA glue. I have now started to see folks use it in carpentry. The accellerant seems to be key when using it with carpentry. I still haven't switched over to it for miter joints as I like to tip my trim with levels to get it to sit tight to the wall so pre-assembly is not an option.

Great video as usual Scott & Jess...keep them coming. Keeps us wet and cold wintery Scots happy seeing others in their summer months! What you touched on here is the 'legacy' of your house for you both but also for future owners. Mate, we bought our house in 2014, and the first room we tackled was converting a sitting room into a kitchen, and it's STILL not finished. When thinking about how much a renovation costs, you've got to think about the long term. If you're planning on living there for a long time, the money you spend on things is less important than doing something that you WANT to live in.

Hi Scot I'm renovating a house too and I also add extra insulation on the external walls. I do it with glass wool of 15cm thickness. So my window sills get about 17cm thicker. What I do is buying secondhand table on the internet and cut those into the right pieces. It gives you good quality material for a really low price. The other day I bought a dining table for like €25,00. I live in the Netherlands.

Insulation: I plan on adding exterior insulation over the studs (WRB membrane and air barrier on studs, then), 100mm thick Steico R2.5. Total wall will be R5 (m2.C)/w. Vertical battens over the exterior insulation as drainage and ventilation space, then cladding /weather boards. I will have the same work with the windows, and internal and external weather board corners will be more work, but doubling the insulation, eliminating thermal bridging, and adding the drainage / ventilation space outside. But I’ve been planning this before you started your renovation…😢
