I've definitely messed up by drilling oversized pilot holes to avoid shattering fragile old dry wood, thus leading my screws to spin. I regret those pilot holes.

Absolutely! I rebuilt a second story deck and it's staircase last year and I insisted on drilling pilot holes for everything because the old deck and stairs failed because they used twist nails. The screws with pilot holes will last MUCH longer. The joist tape I used will help a lot too

I really like this series because of its totality. It's not ‘since last time, this person did X or that person did Y’. You are a small team, hacking at it, improving your house one step at a time. I also think the fact that the house is being upgraded with funds generated by these videos create a dynamic where things are explained well but not lingered upon, and it seems you get to do it proper because then you can explain what you do. Not that I think you wouldn't do it proper anyway, but things like moving most windows to their optimal position and explaining how and why leads to good content, good videos, and later to more views and more videos.

This has to be my fav ep so far because it’s so candid. Scott is showing us a glimmer of how hard it actually is to do what he does. He otherwise makes it all look so effortless. For me it is more about being able to enjoy a bit of your and Jess's life in New Zealand and what it is like to own and renovate your own home while I sit in Berlin, Germany. Showing it all, all the raw emotions and thoughts, is what makes these videos so lovely and where you connect with us, the viewer. Almost everyone else is at 1.25X or 1.5X. Even though you think these projects drag on forever, and they probably do, your content is phenomenal. I appreciate the fact that you get into the nitty gritty, checking out and taking care of all those little shitty bits. It's educational, entertaining and insightful. Old houses have some interesting short cuts and means to cope with situational problems. It must be remembered when many of these places were built, materials were often in short supply. This was mainly due to the various wars that consumed all sorts of materials. For instance, my sister's house, built just after the first world war has studs that go up a few feet then stop. Another bit of studwork will then go the rest of the way up - not sistered but standing off 12 inches to the side. It's an amazing piece of patchwork and it's only the weatherboards that hold it all together.

I spent 10 months cycle touring and working in New Zealand, and several years afterwards visited New Zealand twice, all adventures in the mountains and kayaking trips in the South Island. We definitely will channel your thoughts the next time those feelings of urgency to hurry to complete important "ground work" tasks pop into our heads. Not as easy as Scott makes it seem. Edit: Just seen the scene where you were describing the laborious renovation work needed to do things to what you & Jess want. NO NEED for apologies, Scott. If anything, you are showing us all how reno work is SUPPOSED to be done. Thorough, better than before. My Dad was a chippy, way back when. He took pride in his work and was proud that he could make cabinets and cases so well, that they fit perfectly in all angles. He also did shopfitting in the days prior to a lot of the prefab counters. I kinda think my Dad would see this and be pleased to see the level of detail you are putting in, Scott.

6:00 lead paint. I nearly dived to comment as soon as the video started. A couple I know about your ages are working on their old house and realised lead in old paint they're sanding and cutting so they stayed with us while the work was done - they were especially concerned as wanting to start family. Also, tested garden soil and found lead due to it being in petrol for decades. They'll cap it and use raised beds with soil from elsewhere

Going through the renovation on a 1900 federation house here in Tasmania. We are changing exterior weatherboards to fibre cement and replacing timber windows to uPVC, all very expensive. Should have waited and bought now instead of like 2 years ago and spending loads more on buying and renovation. But I can tell you fussiness is absolutely a compliment to any tradesman for their craftsmanship.

Loved this exiting episode! I've had my run ins with construction timetables as a family father working in IT doing renovation on our own house, an apprentice carpenter and journeyman doing commerial construction and as a master carpenter and construction architect. I was reading meeting minutes from 5th of may where we noted that we expext all concrete work to be finished by the middle of june. As in today. In actuality we are pouring the first plate next monday. Its three floors and 3000 sqm. Stuff happens.

I really like the fact that you show us the details of the renovation and avoid glossing over the time consuming foundational parts that are necessary but not necessarily "glamorous". Seeing the work that goes into altering this window opening with all of the glitches - eating insulation with the planer - gives us the opportunity to understand what is involved in terms of time and effort.
