I've definitely messed up by drilling oversized pilot holes to avoid shattering fragile old dry wood, thus leading my screws to spin. I regret those pilot holes.
@HyperactiveNeuron Жыл бұрын
Absolutely! I rebuilt a second story deck and it's staircase last year and I insisted on drilling pilot holes for everything because the old deck and stairs failed because they used twist nails. The screws with pilot holes will last MUCH longer. The joist tape I used will help a lot too

Do you know what makes your content stick above the rest? It's the fact that although you're extremely experienced in what you do, you still have those jobs that drag out and drag you down like us mere mortals, and you share that story with us. It's not you and a crew of carpenters smashing through it in days, it's you crafting and considering every detail and sharing that thought process with us. Don't be had on yourself, I'd say everyone watching is sharing your pain as us DIY types are often in this state!! Kia kaha bro

I really like this series because of its totality. It's not ‘since last time, this person did X or that person did Y’. You are a small team, hacking at it, improving your house one step at a time. I also think the fact that the house is being upgraded with funds generated by these videos create a dynamic where things are explained well but not lingered upon, and it seems you get to do it proper because then you can explain what you do. Not that I think you wouldn't do it proper anyway, but things like moving most windows to their optimal position and explaining how and why leads to good content, good videos, and later to more views and more videos.

This has to be my fav ep so far because it’s so candid. Scott is showing us a glimmer of how hard it actually is to do what he does. He otherwise makes it all look so effortless. It’s a sage reminder that what he is accomplishing is staggering, and although a consummate professional, he is not without his stresses and pressures. I’m sure I’m not the only one watching for Scotts approach, over the progress he makes each video. I’m also sure we’d all watch him frame windows in crisp white linen shirts for years if we had to. Handsome bastard.

Now let's be honest, you are a role model, you show how someone can rebuild his house without expensive contractors so that it looks great, practical and comfortable. No matter how long it takes, it helps many to take the fear of something like that. In addition, you also show exactly how it is done. Also your fear as a professional to mess up becomes clear, while considering everything several times and still doubt, just like us. So what could be better? Please keep it up!!!

Hey Scott, I've been watching for years now and let me tell you, don't worry about the pace of the renovations or that the videos/jobs might get redundant. For me it is more about being able to enjoy a bit of your and Jess's life in New Zealand and what it is like to own and renovate your own home while I sit in Berlin, Germany. Showing it all, all the raw emotions and thoughts, is what makes these videos so lovely and where you connect with us, the viewer. I appreciate the fact that you get into the nitty gritty, checking out and taking care of all those little shitty bits. It's educational, entertaining and insightful. Old houses have some interesting short cuts and means to cope with situational problems. It must be remembered when many of these places were built, materials were often in short supply. This was mainly due to the various wars that consumed all sorts of materials. For instance, my sister's house, built just after the first world war has studs that go up a few feet then stop. Another bit of studwork will then go the rest of the way up - not sistered but standing off 12 inches to the side. It's an amazing piece of patchwork and it's only the weatherboards that hold it all together.

Ray's sense of humour is definitely the cherry on top to your channel 😊👍So thanks for editing to include his clever lighthearted comic comments. 🙏🇨🇦 Scott and Jess, you are keeping things real my friends. WE DIY"ers go through the same feelings in a renovation that you have expressed near the end of your presentation. Oh how many times I have thought that I wish to get on to the more "fun" tasks of a build! Then, as you appear to be also doing, I regroup my thoughts to put things into a realistic perspective, managing that sense of urgency, which generally leads to mistakes or a not as good a job. You got this Scott, Ray and Jess💯. A point to also mention is your editing skills are also well done and, from this Eastern Canadian household, eye catching scenery of beautiful New Zealand. I spent 10 months cycle touring and working in New Zealand, and several years afterwards visited New Zealand twice, all adventures in the mountains and kayaking trips in the South Island. We definitely will channel your thoughts the next time those feelings of urgency to hurry to complete important "ground work" tasks pop into our heads. Cheers, female carpenter DIY'er from Atlantic Canada over on the far side, East Coast, of Canada on a small little Island, the smallest Island of Canada called Prince Edward Island.☺💝🇨🇦 You guys got this....💪.....doing it well and right is the best decision...Slow and steady wins the race🚶🏁 LOL, Ray just "cracks us up" with his clever comments😍

Not as easy as Scott makes it seem. Edit: Just seen the scene where you were describing the laborious renovation work needed to do things to what you & Jess want. NO NEED for apologies, Scott. If anything, you are showing us all how reno work is SUPPOSED to be done. Thorough, better than before. My Dad was a chippy, way back when. He took pride in his work and was proud that he could make cabinets and cases so well, that they fit perfectly in all angles. He also did shopfitting in the days prior to a lot of the prefab counters. I kinda think my Dad would see this and be pleased to see the level of detail you are putting in, Scott.

Hey Scott & Jess & Ray, we love what you do. Standard Saturday morning watching of your ‘quality content’ sets us up for the weekend. What makes it quality is that you show everything that is unexpected and how to resolve it, you have a sound methodical approach, and you retain the fun 😊. Keep up the great work, and keep on keeping it real! 🇦🇺 🇳🇿

Each week I look forward to your video's, the fun, the interest, the struggles and the high standard of workmanship. I have done some renovation on several houses we've owned and have enjoyed the journey. We've made a start on this place but are planning more so I have great interest in what you do and to encourage you in your great work

Love a nice long episode! Just know that these are entertaining as heck, and at least for me I've not grown tired of seeing any the renovation content! Also makes me feel better about taking 6 months to renovate my bathroom 🤣

I like the unforeseen problems you encounter and your solutions to resolve them. It doesn’t matter if a job seems to drag on. There’s always something to learn
