Interesting for U.S. tourists: When you leave the railway station you see a monument, offered by France thanking for the humanitarian aid by Switzerland during the french-german war 1870/71, when Basel, Berne and Zurich evacuated thiusands of women and children from Strasburg, which was under heavy artillery fire. The artist, who designed this monument, was the same, who designed the Liberty Statue in New York! Mr, Bartholdy. If you look at the lady protecting the women and children with her swiss shield, you will easily recognise the same female model as with the Liberty Statue. Just as additional info.

As a person who lives in Basel do not go to mark Haller but just stay near martplatz AND go to a place called Gilgen. Also go to barfusserplatz if you are tourist. Also American cents in Basel are rapen and finally one of the best restaurant in Basel is Fischerstuba near wettstienplatz!

As a basilean myself i suggest future visitors also smth uncommon for tourists: -Port in Kleinhüningen(basel) -streets next/nearby the market place -a sauna in winter at directly attached to the river -numerous places for good and cheap eating local and international -redlight district(but dont expect topmodels) -streetworkout at the river(for sport) -dreirosenbrücke(brigde) for sunset picnic and a few more activities but im too lazy rn to write it down.

Can people dip in the river after the sauna?! Cool recommendations! I would add the Fondation Beyeler Museum too. (Not a Basilean myself)

I'm a Brit who lived in Basel for a year (firstly near SBB, then in Kleinhuningen halfway between Claraplatz and the Stucki centre) before moving onto the much quieter Sarnen, just outside Lucerne. I miss Basel so much so this is the only reason I'm watching this. In terms of Swiss towns and the order I love them; 1. Basel 2. Lucerne 3. Bern 4. Lugano 5. Biel 6. Fribourg 7. Zurich 8. Zug 9. Lausanne 10. St Gallen 11. Geneva

@henrythomasbarthram60652 жыл бұрын
There's a lot to visit in Switzerland. If ever you're heading down from the UK and Italy, I'd recommend doing it over a number of days. There's a lot worth visiting in the nearby regions of France and Germany too (but don't go to Mulhouse, France, it's rough there! Colmar and Strasbourg, though? LOVELY. Strasbourg is 1 hour 15 from Basel by car or train). Switzerland also has some underrated cities as well as Basel. Lugano, Lucerne and Bern are my recommendations once you've left Basel to travel to Italy. The transport museum in Lucerne is AMAZING.

I am so grateful that I followed your recommendation to day trip to Basel. What a beautiful place and fabulous museums! The only lesson learned as a solo traveler is that they wouldn’t let me climb the church tower alone; the rule is that I have to go with someone I know. I wonder what the origin of that policy is?

Not efficient? Thy use just the force of the river so it’s more efficient than walking :D its 100% CO2 neutral
@TheTravelingSwiss3 жыл бұрын
Haha! Maybe that wasn’t a great word choice on my part - I meant it isn’t particularly time-efficient :)
@Avarage.Joe-David3 жыл бұрын
@@TheTravelingSwiss okay that’s better :D it’s really slow 😂 But the most people really think that the boat get pulled by the cable. But the cable is only to prevent the boat from floating down the river. To cross it they just put the boat in a 45 degree angle to the flow direction of the river. So the force of the water get splittend and pushes the boat to the other side :)
@TheTravelingSwiss3 жыл бұрын
Oooh! I was wondering why it was on an angle! That makes a lot of sense thank you for the explanation! 😊
@Baselfreak Жыл бұрын
It is the huge rudder behind the boat, which controls the speed and manoeuvres, the position of the cable navigates the ship right or left. And it has to be slow. There is no better place to relax, thinking, and enjoying the force of the current. 😎 This video explains the functions: kzbin.info/www/bejne/a5Kyqn54oNyZnas&si=EnSIkaIECMiOmarE
