Hands down the best explanation of how this works. I’m going into PR and I tell people this all the time. Your favorite rapper on IG doesn’t own any of those clothes, cars or jewelry. It’s all rented and borrowed. Think about all these rappers you know of through IG; they have all these nice things yet we’ve never heard any songs from them. Most of them now make money off of partner/sponsorships which the label benefits off of too. These people get stuck in bad deals and end up there for the rest of their lives and the labels force them to stay in the spotlight to attract ppl. Yes, you can make great music in your house for a fourth of that 100k studio time. This is why REAL talent matters.
@lifeizrealtv Жыл бұрын
nice! One thing I think you should add about expenses is how shady they are. For instance, a record label gives you a budget to record. They give you a list of recording studios that you can go to. What the artist doesnt know is that recording studio has a relationship with the label. So whatever money they spend on recording gets a "kick back". Not knowing the label probably paid for the recording studio for the month or sometimes a year. So you pay the recording studio and then they send that bread right back to the label while in essence the label didnt lose a dime on you. Or the death clause in a contract. Record labels put life insurance on the artist. So in the event if they die, the label collects that bread. And what happens? They give you the radio play that you as an artist been looking for prior to your death. So they collect the money on your death and then collect the money AGAIN after you are dead. And EVERYTHING belongs to them.

That's hell of a fantasy for most people. Since majority are beneath the upper economic class. The music industry is a mafia of sorts: unless you are part of the family, you will never get access to the people and the methods that will enable you to have a similar career to signed artists. You can try to market yourself independently and be relatively successful (as in have a wide fanbase via social media), but you will never get the publicity, media mileage, award nominations, etc. unless you make a deal with a major label.
@sirwellingtonthethird6873 жыл бұрын
Because the people that do that aren’t able to live off their careers. They could but they’ll be struggling to make ends meet. Plus what you’re saying takes a lot of time and money, when these rappers are mostly broke when they sign. For them choosing to sign for riches is better than hustling till who knows how long.

One thing we learned; if you're very popular and get millions of views/plays even without a deal, the label needs/wants you more than you needing them. You can take advantage of that. Like he did. He asked for a lot less of an advance, and asked if they could also help him start a record label. Brother, these are words every artist needs to hear before they sign anything, or any agreement. One point I would add is that an artist should have an attorney before even entering into any conversation with a label. Someone recommended by someone outside of the label or production company. So that the deal can be fully vetted and explained to them before they proceed with signing and so that they have more leverage. Even as a new artist you can approach the music business and build your own brand in these times. Blessings and thanks for spreading the information and truth. The rap industry is designed to promote popular artists so signing a contract is almost a must to become a successful artist. That’s why many rappers cave once their careers start to fall off. It’s either sell your soul or work at McDonald’s.

Incorrect
@sirwellingtonthethird6873 жыл бұрын
@@dareonallen9574 you just say incorrect without giving any argument as to why not
@PoeticallyGifted3 жыл бұрын
Incorrect, artists cave because they get it and realize its not what they wanted. Most just want the financial freedom not doing the homework behind it. Also some are artists and others arent. Some just want a check and others take pride in creating musical art because its their passion. But i see where you coming from, the industry is designed to promote negative narratives/ connotations, because negative attention gets maximized and positive attention gets minimized. Nowadays its easier the independent route, but social media conflicts most perception on reality so they do irrational impulsive decisions, thinking their going to get where the favorite artist is; not knowing the work they have to put in to get there. Long story short people got lazy.
@ebel92853 жыл бұрын
He isn't lying about the selling your soul part.
@sirwellingtonthethird6873 жыл бұрын
@@PoeticallyGifted yeah I agree I was referring to the rap culture of getting tattoos everywhere including your face. That type of environment discourages a regular job which is good and bad. But it makes it easier for them to control you since you can’t get many other jobs with those tattoos that pays the same. They know you’ll have no choice but to sell out once your in deep. Especially rappers that didn’t finish high school or college. It becomes their only way out.

Just want to say thank you for giving us game on the fundementals of how a record label operates. Honestly I feel like the only benefit to a record label is to build credibility but not to profit from. I've always had a theory that most artist that we know today might have did something like the idea I mentioned. Use the label to build a brand and learn how everything is operated then become independent to make the big bucks. The only thing that sucks is that for most good artist their best tracks come from the rise when they're putting themselves out there to be discovered but after they leave the label keeps the masters to their best songs that can potentially have an artist set for life if they had them.
@yourlandladysson63952 жыл бұрын
Any artist who is serious will work diligently and manage funds while under a record deal. Make sure he is owing no money so he can leave and become independent. Then he'll make all the money off the foundation the label has built for him.
