Malort was created by a Swedish immigrant, and he basically recreated the traditional Swedish alcohol "Bäska Droppar". Bäska Droppar and many other varieties or wormwood alcohol are still for sale in Sweden, Denmark and other European countries. Both my dad and my brother make their own, which is way worse than the Jeppsons I've tried...

For those older people wondering about Jagermeister, it tastes almost exactly like paregoric, which I believe is banned nearly everywhere now. It's really not a pleasant taste and takes some getting used to. Once you taste it you can never un-taste it. You will always recognize it immediately. I met a guy in a rock band who loved to drink Jagermeister ice gold. So we got a bottle, put it in the deep freeze and handed it to him after the concert. We still have the bottle.

Way back when, on a friend's 21st birthday, I ordered him a custom shot with tequila and Jager topped with whip cream and a pickled jalepeno slice. I called it the Apocalypse Now.
