Your strongest beers are mainly fortified beers. But in my eyes, these are no longer beers, but more ‘mixed drinks’. The strongest classic beer in the world comes from Schorschbräu in Gunzenhausen, Germany. It is the Schorschbock 55%, an "Eisbock" from extreme brewer Georg ‘Schorsch’ Tscheuschner.

There's several really good US Beers that are aged in Bourbon Barrels and otherwise that are anywhere between 19 and 28% abv, they're super tasty, y'all definitely gotta check those out!

Yeah, I though the addition of the fortified beers was a bit of a cheat as the high alcohol content wasn't coming from the brewing process but was just an added distilled spirit. I was expecting them to be doing at least one of the Sam Adams Utopia releases or any one of MANY English strong ales. One of the breweries local to me in Pennsylvania, Conynygham Brewing, makes a barrel aged beer called Shipwreck Stout where the batch I was around 21% and batch II was 18.5%, both are fantastic. If they wanted something closer to home they could have done Harviestoun Brewery's Old Engine Oil Engineer's Reserve from Scotland at 9%, or one of their slightly less potent Ola Dubh versions which are aged in Highland Park whisky casks. I actually would love to find that Warrior though as I love imperial stouts and peated whiskey!

@@revgregory I mean, i'm still glad they tried those monstrosities hahahaha, but yeah, the Kentucky brand barrel-aged beers are all up in the 18-20-odd abv bracket and they're fantastic, also NY's Ommegang brewery has some tasty strong brews coming in at between 11-17%, then ofc there's ones like Dragon's Milk, and a number of other Trippels and Quads out there that are just fantastic. Definitely wouldn't mind trying that Warrior stout too yeah!

You can naturally brew up to about 18%. Above that, they freeze distill the brew. They used to make Apple Jack the same way. But the congeners stay in the brew, which will make it "Hangover In A Can".

There was a local microbrewery that had a 15% beer that was not harsh and was delicious. You couldn't tell how much alcohol was in it. They limited people to 2 a night because people were getting wasted. Best part, one day a week it was $3 a pint.

More than 13% Alcohol usually kills yeast, so you probably need to distill the beer/wine to make it stronger. Or add 90% pure alcohol ( already distilled) to fortify the drink.

These super strong beers are all fortified by adding additional alcohol after brewing the beer. None get this strong by brewing alone.

Most of them aren't. They are most likely extreme versions of Eisbock (a german style of beer made from freezing an already strong doppelbock to remove it's water content thus concentrating the alcohol volume) so they can still be labeled as beer and not spirits.

@permafrostprod1 in the U.S., you can add alcohol to beer and still call it beer which is how "Malt liquor" is made, so maybe many of these are just concentrated beer or what have you but fortified beer is definitely common and permissable, though what they fortify it with might be restricted legally.

Also malt liquor will extand to an array of juices like "Smirnoff Ice" that as no intention to be percived as being a beer. I don't know all the american laws around that topic but I know enough to be sure of that. It's about the same in Canada and way more strict in beer producing countries in Europe (UK, Ireland, Germany, Belgium, Etc.) * from the TTB rules - Breweries are not allowed to add distilled spirit to beer, or even to have bulk spirit on site. -
