When I was a young lad, my grandmother used to give us kids what you call a honey toddy shot (whiskey, honey and lemon juice) when we had a cold or flu to help us sleep and to help with whatever bug we had. She had a theory about that drink. She said the alcohol in the whiskey would kill the germs, the acid in the lemon juice would cut the phlegm in your throat, and the honey would coat and soothe your throat. She swore by it. I don't know about her theory, but I do know that at 7 or 8 years old, it definitely helped put us to sleep....

My mom had 3 kids all sick at once. Made us hot toddy’s with hot tea, we slept for hours, woke up still drunk and my 2 brothers fell down the stairs. We were in an old farm house that had weirdly steep stairs. It worked, but she didn’t try it again.

@@karenkyoungsc Funny you mention that! My dad retired and bought an old farm house and the stairs were very steep too. Old houses sometimes didn't have stairs but ladders. When remodeling you had less room to put in stairs so they had to be steep. The steps were tallers and narrower to accommodate the lack of space.

The honey toddy shot is basically the cough medicine my dad uses to give us when we were kids. But he used a cheap whiskey instead of bourbon. And it didn't bother him if we were out of honey and lemon.

On our Ireland tour 10 years ago we stopped at Foynes on the Shannon River. Interesting museum visit. Learned about the flying boats landing there and the connection to Maureen O’Hara. Watched them make hot Irish whiskeys and listened to the tale of its invention for the cold passengers coming ashore.

They are. My grandmother used to add just enough hot water to it to make it warm, and gave them to us as cough/cold/flu medicine. They really did help. At the age of 60, I still swear by it being the best home remedy ever.
