We had a bathroom remodel about 4 years ago involving moving the sink and toilet to other side of the room and putting in a tub where a small shower was. I've often wondered it they dealt with the vents properly. Off and on we have a sewer or rat smell in the kitchen which is on the other side of the wall from the bathroom. The sink doesn't smell. The only slow drain in the house is the tub, which I attribute to my hair in the drain. We have had rats under the house. Maybe they've been in the house or attic too. I can't sniff out any source of the smell. When the bathroom fan is on it draws in a bad smell through the wall heater, like old wood, but worse. The remodel was permitted, performed by a licensed plumber and inspected. I wish you worked in Ocean Shores, Washington ! We have a lovely beach you would enjoy. :)

@Moe B Not for sure. We still have minor smell over kitchen sink, worse when bathroom fan is on, like air is being pulled through wall. Saw rat droppings outside crawlspace and under hood of motorhome in driveway.

We adopted a Chihuahua mix. He immediately went to the wall between kitchen and bathroom and barked wildly. I opened up the wall and found rat poop and a dead rat. After cleaning that out, we have no more smell. Case closed !☺️

@@lazarocarrillo6290 It turns out our smell problem isn't over because more rats have appeared. The plumber who installed our new tub cut a large hole in the floor for the pipe. He left the large space around the pipe and rats are climbing up from the crawl space through the gap. They must be digging under the concrete block foundation because there are no longer any access points in the foundation. I called the contractor, Bath Fitter, and they very nicely told me they did it correctly and if I have rats I should call a pest control company. I can put some trim around the pipe myself, I'll just need to remove more of the wall so I can reach it. At the same time I'll add another grab bar for the tub while the studs are exposed.

The amount of money plummers charge and that grade of work, they should be required to fix anything they leave so shotty and customer has to re-do.

New construction definitely needs to create much DEEPER crawl spaces with multiple exit points! This is claustrophobic even to watch 😰

The worst sewer smell I've encountered was in a relative's house that turned out to have a kitchen drain that was disconnected under the house and all the water with food bits was pooled in the crawlspace for years. You wouldn't believe how bad. The next worst was my under-tub floor open to the crawlspace with rats coming and going. The third worse was a sewer smell in the front porch area which was caused by rotten leaves in the gutter.

Rule 1 ...... watch what your contractor does. And get it in writing as a contract. This way you can hold him accountable but also the contractor has a legal document which bind's him to do this work proper. And never pay more than 50% on a job upfront. And if the amount is bigger than 10k use a shared trust account this way the contractor can not run off with your money. And don't forget even a "certified" plumber doesn't mean the job is done proper. Work with the person you hire. And ask him questions why he is doing it that way so you as a Customer understand him. Don't be an A$$ or he will rip you off. Be open and communicate this way you understand why things cost also that much.

Where are you guys located? My house is on slab When plumbed they had not finished mb shower there was a hole where shower head should be.when I moved in it looked fixed.but later found huge hole had been made in cement under vinyl siding on out side of house .8 years later when having other issues .got some one to take off siding in that area.and it was open to under bath tub outside hole 15 inch's or more there. And what we saw was when they cutt that hole they cut vent pipe apr.4 or 4 inch's above ground so the base of the whole houses vent pipe .It looked like duct tape around it not sure it was .grey in color apr.2 to 2 1/2 inch's wide.they wrapped it where it was cutt. I had smell issues in this house 19 years That was at 12 years here. Some smells the past months were like chemical smells still don't know what or where from, got sick Over and over no answers.😳🤔put plywood over hole area.person was not trained to fix it.just plywood.

So y’all disconnected the sewage pump and filled the tank that looks like it was buried (not advised) with rocks and slapped an exhaust fan to release the gases. I believe you’ll have a bigger problem now; sewage flooding the basement because otherwise what is the pump doing?

I’ve been trying to get rid of a bad smell in my laundry room. It seems to come up when the dishwasher is running or someone’s taking a shower inside either bathroom? I just I just purchased a new sub pump in the basement purchase new washer and dryer. A new hot water tank was replaced with all the bells and whistles. The drain in the floor we’re dumping bleach in it every other day and now I am currently in the sub pump because it smells too?

It’s a bit of challenge when we’re not there to be helpful. Have you taped off the shower drain, vanity holes (2) and around toilet, air register in bathroom? Seal off all those areas. Keep door shut, then walk in after a late few hours to see if it still lingering. If not, then remove one seal at a time… example: remove toilet seal, then waitS
