@WittyDroog8 ай бұрын
I believe the contract specifically states that if he cannot be repaid then "Shylock has the liberty to take one pound of flesh" the key term is "take" connected to Shylock as the subject of the clause
@Moa_G8 ай бұрын
Then it's not a plot hole ?
@WittyDroog8 ай бұрын
@Moa_G Not a big enough one to ruin the story, at least not to me. They're already using the language of the contract in extremely literal terms (like only taking flesh and not a drop of blood to be spilled) and in their effort to twist it against Shylock they would enforce that Shylock must take it himself

The first time I saw this movie I thought that Shylocks lines had been edited in some way for Pacino because when he spoke it sounded so much more natural and organic than when the other actors spoke. Wonderful actors but they sounded stilted compared to Pacino. I actually checked the script and there were, of course, no editing. Pacino is just an extremely talented actor!
@jacobzaranyika9334 Жыл бұрын
Shylock was never the villain. He is but a product of his environment. He was an honest hard working man under unbearable, racist conditions, yet he still thrived to the extent that his oppressors approached him for help. They signed a contract and borrowed his money. In addition, there is that theme of making the Jews look bad in order to make the Christians better. The "....quality of mercy..." speech by Portia is a clear indication of the Christians trying to seem more civilized than the Jews. When that fails - the ABUSE POWER - they cheat and lie. They get hard and dirty - by using a fake lawyer to get out of trouble. The entire court room scene and verdict is a shambles. It makes the Christians liars and to me, the REAL villains!

@@pamnob2259 yes she did tricked Shylock but more importantly, the way she did it was through deception. She dosen't work in the judiciary, she's not a lawyer. She used her personal relationship with powerful people to act as if she was a lawyer. I don't remember the name but her friend wrote her a letter of recommendation and only because of that she was allowed to interrogate Shylock. If Portia and her friend would have been caught they would serve even worse punishment than Shylock. Her friend's license should have also been taken. It's called cheating, deception, hypocrisy. It was never about the money. He refused double the money. It was about race, rage, desperation, prejudice and religion. It was a rebellion against the very staple antisemitism of his day. They were racist and cruel to Jews but now they are asking about mercy. Why didn't they extend the same mercy they demand to all the Jews in Venice? They instead spat on them and rejoiced in their failures or mocked their success. They made him a villain. They created the monster that is now Shylock by the manner they treated him Unless if you have a fake lawyer called Portia, give me my pound of flesh. Nay, even the judges ruled nothing can be done. He is to be given what he is owed. The fairy tale of a clever cross dresser pretending to be a lawyer is not a realistic option for you - the pound of flesh is due - "There is no baby and there never was" - I seek not a drop more. Not even my name is required. Otherwise - "The villainy you teach us, we will execute" Do NOT underestimate my determination! When you are seriously ready to talk, you will send Bill Maher, instead of going out of your way to suggest: 1. He does not know me 2. He is cheating on me. Neither is true independently or individually. I am not blind to the suggesting videos you are feeding me to talk. If I am schizophrenic as you suggest, then I am correct in ignoring them. Then I must be better.... There was as you know never anything wrong with me. So it is inhuman of you to drug me.
