Those cream cans with your family history are priceless! Just love them and I am so glad you are keeping them. I'm sure your girls will appreciate the plaque you are going to present them with. I sure would. An interesting point about ICI, it was sold to DuPont and then a splinter of that company ended up becoming AstraZeneca.

Thanks Dee. I'll get some footage of the items at the girl's venue at some stage - they took they barrel too. I'm looking forward to cleaning up those cream cans! Hopefully a video coming soon. 😊

I knew those motor parts were woryh something online. I think I guessed $180 back then. But you blew that number out of the water. Great results. Those historal fibds are pretty cool. Well worth the time to restore and preserve.

Thanks Kayle, yeah I have to admit I didn't think they would sell quite that well! Makes me wonder about even parting out a brand new motor as an experiment!

The Brunner Mond lid for Sodium Bicarbonate, made in Northwich tallies very well with my knowledge and that of the ‘Science Museum Group’ UK. Briefly, J. T. Brunner and Ludwig Mond set up a soda ash plant at Winnington, near Northwich, Cheshire, producing soda ash in 1874. The area has vast underground deposits of rock salt (impure sodium chloride) mined to this day. After mergers and expansion, the company diversified its chemical production and in WWI produced ammonium nitrate and TNT. Later, in 1926, after further mergers, ICI was formed and the Northwich plant became the ‘Alkali Division’. In 1991, after the break up of ICI, Brunner Mond Holdings was formed and eventually became separate from Akzo Nobel, and is now owned by Tata Chemicals. Confusing? Probably, but this means that if the lid is part of the barrel, the ICI on the base dates it AFTER 1926, but clearly it looks pretty old and worn and must be well before 1991. Hope this is of some use. (I live in Bolton, northwest of Manchester. ICI had a huge presence in the north of England.)
@TheUltimateRecycler Жыл бұрын
Many thanks for all that! Yep - company mergers and takeovers are often quite confusing! The BM & Co lid is all that is left from a slightly larger barrel - so I'm sure this would pre-date ICI. Whereas the complete barrel would be after 1926 as you've mentioned, but probably not long after!

Well done parting out that engine. Sometimes people damage and break things that never wear out from normal use, so there is a market. I parted out my neighbours Mazda 121 and sold parts that usually go to the crusher like the petrol tank and back window and even a used CV joint.

I've sold some bike parts on ebay that sold for more than i listed the bike locally for, so there's many things that will sell in parts or even broken. (i have a lot of stuff i plan on doing a quick look over, and if not easy will be sold to someone else to fix or use for parts) The mower engine is interesting though, because i bought a masport catcher flap off a mower shop cheaper than "cost price" and he said the way he can do that, is the shop gets the whole mower and strips it down as parts, and makes more in parts than he would as a going mower. so there's definitely things to consider if items are too big to post as a whole. those old barrels were cool, it's great to see they are still around and may end up in use/display again.

Thanks Dean. I seem to remember when Holden Commodores first came out in the late 70s, someone priced one out as spare parts and the total was something like $30K for a $6.5k car!

Fascinating items Chris. Amazing return on the engine parts. I was going to assume the barrel read, 'Glass with Care'. Imperial Chemical Industries, produced chemicals, dyes, explosives, fertilizers, pesticides, synthetic fibres and plastics. Maybe one of these products was in glass in the barrel ? 👍

The barrel probably said Glass, Handle With Care. Have you ever watched Poly Prophet on KZbin he picks up stuff from peoples hard rubbish piles in Melbourne. He has also been known to drop off his copper wire at the same metal recycling plant as you do sometimes. He also tries to rescue stuff from landfill.
