Scrapping out a Vintage Computer CRT Monitor for some nice Scrap Copper - but little else!

A quick scrapping video here on a vintage 1990s computer monitor that wasn't worth saving, to see what scrap value we could find. In the end - there wasn't much except some nice copper.

this is actually some higher level knowledge and explaining process. I thank you for that. Most of the videos on scrapping are from scrappers and not from technicians that actually know about the stuff they are scrapping.

you can use the braided wire as desoldering wick also

yes there are a lot of collectors out there, i dont collect but i am for saving them. i only have what i need, (for my 8 bit computers and tv for my atari and nes)

It is generally worth picking off all IC chips, especially the ceramic ones, and EPROMS - the ones with a sticker covering a little window. It's certainly a waste to get paid low grade board price for the weight.

Yeah, I do save the ICs when I feel the urge and they are easily accessible! No one will buy the low-grade boards here, so I just send them to ewaste recycling.

So in a nutshell, these CRT monitors harbour dangers, requer caution in dismateling, have not a lot of value in them and you need to take them to landfill. So if you are into scrap they are tons of trouble for not enough money. They are only worth picking up if you have a shop and storage place to wait and see if they will sell in the future as regular antiques.

A reasonable summary Sarit, although they do have a demand now if in working condition and they usually sell on ebay for pretty decent money. I'm storing good ones as I think they'll be a good investment for future sales. For street scrappers, I'd suggest pulling out the degaussing cable & the yolk on the street and leaving the rest as ewaste. Unless they appear in good condition and you wish to try and resell them!

There must be plenty still sitting in peoples sheds from what I see coming into the shop Rick. I guess eventually the supply will run out and they'll be even more sought after!

That red lead leading up to the cap in the middle of the top of the tube has 25kv when the monitor is running, and will hold a charge after powering off, usually not for long, and its not dangerous, but feels pretty awful if it gets you. Worth discharging if you are pulling one apart immediately after powering up and it runs enough to get some sort of picture. One other thing people might like to save is the heatsinks with the little fins bent in alternative directions with a diode attached. They are either copper or brass, and if you cut the diode lead then rock back and forth a few times metal fatigue will break the pins off where they are soldered to the board. You were lucky that European style yoke came apart so easily. Many of them are full of glue, and I used to just chuck them in with the transformers as you could flatten them with a sledge hammer and still get nowhere.

Thanks for your comments Stephen! Yeah, the static charge on the red lead may be high, but it would be pretty low current so not very dangerous - but I didn't know it would hold any charge after the unit is powered off. I don't think anyone should scrap something immediately after having it running as a general rule! Yep - I have had some of these full of glue and they usually go into my transformer bin. This one was quite easy 😊👍

@@TheUltimateRecycler Your advice on the main capacitor in the power supply is very good. I have seen those still charged up weeks later in faulty equipment and it could be lethal. The glass in a picture tube has conductive coatings inside and out of the glass insulator so behaves like a capacitor. They will sometimes even regain a bit of charge after you short them out. The HV there is very low current and not lethal, but feels pretty bad when it gets you. People should really short out the capacitor in microwave ovens as well before pinching the transformer even though there is a very small chance of one being charged, since they have an inbuild discharging resistor. I think I only ever saw one hold a small charge back when I repaired hundreds of them. One of those caps could certainly kill you.

@@stephenw2992 Thanks for all the info mate! Yeah no one really enjoys a shock no matter how low the current is! I've had plenty from electric fences and even ignition coils on small engine magnetos! Yep, I feel scrappers and repairers alike should make it a habit to discharge any large caps every time just to be safe.

Maybe! I really don't know actually. I'm yet to see any concrete evidence that mlccs are viable to collect even if they do contain precious metals..

It is can be extremely expensive in the US to recycle the glass and cathode ray tube from CRT style monitor and TV's. Usually the fee far outweighs what you can recover scrap wise. Does your waste facility charge you for tv/monitors where you live? P.S. Where I live they have started to charge for flat screens TV's as well... Cheers

Hi Kimberly. We are fortunate that there is no charge to drop any ewaste at the local transfer station which is fantastic. I can certainly understand that if you had to pay a fee to dispose of them, any pickups for scrapping are out of the question!

Would have taken half an hour to put a new cable on it to make it worth hundred bucks so 50-50. But better to just hook it up to a Nintendo Wii or Sega Dreamcast (or anything else that runs 480p resolution) and live the dream :). What makes them worth several hundred to thousands is how much resolution and how fast they can run. Not really what brand they are.

I have so many stacked aside Jason, that I didn't want to save one that had to be repaired! Besides, I expect that there may have been something else wrong with this monitor for the cable to be cut off. Now that I've lost my storage yard and shipping container, storage is more of an issue! 😒
