I would say the crack in the portal makes it even more realistic. Old tunnels tend to get non-detrimental cracks in them. You could even run a little scenario where the tunnel needs to be repaired and deliver everything needed

I think this was the Layout video where I learned the most about new methods on building and detailing a model railway. Painting the rails being the main thing because I feel that would have been something stupid I would do in my youth, thinking it was a good idea, only to ruin what I have after I went through with it. I'm honestly surprised it did not disrupt the current. It is something I will do to my layout in the future. And being a bit biased, I love how you gave your Great Northern Alco RS-2 some run time being a Great Northern collector myself. And have fun with your new puppy!

I think the hand painted rails are much better than spray paint. The uneven application is a lot more realistic. It's a slow process, but it's worth the effort and time. Also, I like to say that the harbors' monotone gray is a little much, but I know it's incomplete, maybe some crates of goods (Fruit anybody) will tie it all neatly together. Keep going Unlucky, your railway is coming along smoothly
@ThomasandJamesАй бұрын
Honestly I think having painted the rails with a brush was a blessing in disguise. It gives it a more authentic grimy imperfect feel. I have a feeling spray paint would have made it a bit to clean looking. Keep up the good work!

I literally made a video about my Ffarquhar Quarry layout, and this drops. What a happy coincidence! Edit: I terms of making water, I once saw this video by a user called 'marklinofsweden', who uses dampened toilet paper (weird as it sounds). The cool part about this technique is that you can shape little waves in the paper with a paintbrush, and it looks very convincing when the process is finished!

Finaly, we'v got a part 4 of the layout! it was a not bad video and to be honest, its actually great to paint rails with brown paint, im sure it took a while for painting rails but id rather spray with spary paint the rails seens it wont weist alot of time. But at least its done nicely! great video and i hope we will see part 5 very soon! its also very nice to get some hardness on the harbor. You've got a very nice layout. About the narrow gauge loop, it was a good idea! im actually very interest about your sculpt tunnel portols seens i didnt actually think about that! putting the chicken wire will really help for alot to make a hill.

Really starting to look like something! I never did much scenery back when I was attempting to build a model railroad, but here’s one thing I did that I quite liked. Maybe you can find a use for it somewhere on your layout: I built tunnel portals for my layout out of wood, but I wanted them to look like concrete, and just painting them gray was too boring. So I sprayed them with spray paint, and then while the paint was still wet, covered them with play sand. Like, dump that sand on with reckless abandon. I waited for the paint to dry so the sand would stick, banged them against the bench to knock off the excess, and then sprayed them with paint again. Gave them some great visible texture. Maybe you can find a use for that somewhere.

@leiagelwasser2168Ай бұрын
Quick note on the tunnel portals, for the effect you were going for, you might want to try dry brushing. It's similar technique, but instead of wiping the paint off after you've applied it to the model you wipe most the paint off your brush on a paper towel or bit of cardboard before doing so. Still leave stuff in the recesses and gives it a very different, worn look.

Scalescenes has some highly detailed OO scale boat models that would be perfect for your harbor for a very reasonable price, including a barge, a small coastal freighter, and a Clyde Puffer; basically the Scottish boat equivalent of a pickup truck. And the reason they're so cheap: They're papercraft models! You can print them out at home; the instructions are excellent for saying what thickness of paper each part needs, and then fold and glue them together. Best of all: Since you're buying a PDF, you can print out and make as many models as you want.

hai! i'm not entirely knowledgable in airdry clay, but from what i do know, the massive amount of cracking was less because of the Styrofoam, and more so due to the way airdry clay works! if i remember correctly, airdry clay is inherently wet, but when it drys, the water evaporates, and causes it to shrink, and, in large areas of it, crack!
