I am SO glad the "larger watch trend" is finally coming to an end. It has irritated me to no end; having witnessed many friends falling for these oversized timepieces, I always felt I was an anomaly for preferring smaller watches. Thankfully, the trends are returning in my favour!

I have quite large wrists but 38 is my preferred size! :D I'm happy as low as 36 no problem, and won't go above 40mm unless it's a dive watch. Definitely agree with you that the smaller watches look more refined and tasteful. My eyes were really opened when I started learning about vintage watches and watch history. To get philosophical for a moment: I feel as though a watch and the wearer is a personal thing, there is in a way an intimacy to the relationship. For a watch to be large and loud and in-your-face seems - to me - to be almost a betrayal of that personal intimacy. Perhaps that doesn't make any sense, but a small watch on my big wrists just feels right to me.

Kevin in the wilds of Missouri. I really enjoy any reviews with sub$400 Seiko or Orient automatics as that is in the price range I can afford. I have purchased Seiko Sarb017 and 033 and SKX007 and 009 which are all great but I also have small wrists like you. I did not know the SKX013 was discontinued or that LongIsland had it for such a great price. Ordered one last night to go with a nice Bond style NATO that I already have on hand. I put a nice strap code super oyster bracelet on my 007 and may have to look for a 20mm version for the 013. Your reviews are the best unbiased ones I have found on the net. Keep up the great service you provide for watch collectors of modest means. Thanks again for the heads up in this video.

It was an excellent comparison and suggestions, as usual, congrats. Here is my number one, I hope since I didn't receive and experienced it yet. A couple of days ago, I bought an Islander 38mm Automatic Dive Watch #ISL-22 with an orange dial. The price of $ 299 is a bargain if you live in the USA. I'm from Italy, so I must consider an extra 70 euro (transport, import taxes, duty, currier fee, and vat). Still not bad for what you get. I can't wait to receive it. I exchanged several emails with Marc, the owner of the Island Watch Company. Awesome helpful guy. I got a Marathon MSAR 36mm a few months ago, and it is a bit small for my 17,5 cm wrist (I cannot state it in inches; you make the conversion.) Now on my wrist, I am wearing a Citizen Promaster Ecodrive on a Cheapest Nato Straps Marine Nationale Paratrooper from Sweden. It feels extremely comfortable. I buy European when I can because of the tax saving. Too bad the Islander is not available in the EU.

Great taste in watches as always! I'm a huge German watch fan, and have a Sinn, Junghans and soon to have Stowa. And big fan of the Speed Master too, especially at 38-39mm. Although I don't buy Chronos since I don't have use for the function. On a side note, I do have to admit though while I like Omega watches, I've always found the name a bit subservient as it represents the weakest of the group (for example among animal groups). And good job highlighting Seiko... great, accurate time pieces of which I need to buy one soon.

My Seiko SKX013 arrived in the post today and is the perfect size for my small wrist and looks great so I was glad to see it included in your list. I just need to replace the uncomfortable rubber strap it came with for a Nato. But I personally would have included the old Rolex Explorer 36mm in the top ten.
@stephenrhodes77589 жыл бұрын
Couldn't agree more regarding the DJ. I finally pulled the trigger on a classic piece from around 90/91& couldn't be happier. It does wear bigger than the suggested 36mm size due to the lug width & the fluted bezel certainly helps its cause. I may return to the retro/classic range for a JLC in the future but i'm not actively searching for anything new at the moment. I am at a bit of a loss as to what Rolex are playing at when it comes to the resizing of their current range. Why increase a dress watch from 36-41mm which imo is far too big for a dress watch & yet only increase The Explorer a tool watch by a paltry 3mm to 39, it doesn't make an sense whatsoever. Finally i wanted to give you a heads up regarding a new brand or rather the return of a vintage brand in Eza. Head over to Fratello Watches for the full story. They have a vintage styled piece in black with a black leather strap that looks just the ticket. I may even take them up on their pre-order offer which looks too good to be true. Check them out & see for yourself.

Another shout out for the 36mm Nomos Club 701. A stunning piece with much more wrist presence than you would imagine thanks to its long lugs. I have 7 inch wrists which I believe are average in the Western world and I would only go to 40mm for a divers type watch with moving bezel. One quick comment though, 'all dial' designs with very slim bezels such as the Junghans in your list wear HUGE imo. For those of us with average sized wrists, I'd say that 38mm for such designs are actually too big! I'd much rather go for a 35mm Nomos Orion that has a similar 'all dial design' than the 38mm version.

Although I'm a larger guy (6' 3"), I really do like and appreciate your choices! A list of great choices no doubt. I often have the opposite problem; my hands and wrist are very large ( XXl glove size,wrist 8.25"). I appreciate a watch for many reasons, quality, beauty and function. I just hope that the trend towards smaller watches finds a happy medium. Big and bulky does not equate to elegance functionality and classiness! I guess what I'm trying too say is, it's more than size; big or small! I would agree, a watch that is to big or too small is just a mistake for the person wearing it. Having said all that; sometimes beauty and desire can get the better of you!

Hello TGV hope all is well stateside, great video as usual. I totally agree with you concerning watch size. I find 38 to 40 mm thee best size for any watch, anything above 40 mm is verging on a dinner plate on the wrist! IMHO Rolex Datejust holds the ace, I'm yet to see any watch that could look so great and iconic at 36mm, please correct me if I'm wrong. The Omega would have a slight chance if it was the reduced manual version of the MOTM but it's a watered down automatic. God I love a manual watch!! I will give it a second, then Tudor 3rd and Seamaster 4th. Cward was trying to look like Rolex and the Red bezel a Tudor black bay. All said we are not far off but you have an advantage of ownership of these watches. Anyway I watched this video 3 times..lol I enjoyed it.

I like the Sinn 356 Copper (38mm) chrono, particularly on the leather strap, classic design in a proper size. There's also the Rolex 114270 Explorer (36mm) perhaps even more iconic than the Submariner. If you are a Breitling fan the 38mm colt automatic is an option. Glycine produce a 36mm Combat six that fits large for it's size, a field watch style, the clean dial with date only option is a great watch for smaller wrists. On the quartz side of things, Alpina, notorious for producing pie plates for the wrist, do make the Extreme Diver in a 38mm size, short lug to lug length also helps the fit. One can still purchase the Omega SMP300 in a quartz at 36mm although i do believe the automatic has been discontinued in the same size. I'm on the fence with the Marathon mid size automatic diver. It's small at 36mm for a dive watch, personally be much happier with a 38mm. Watching the video the Marathon seems top heavy yet does fit you well. I might try one out. BTW. The comment by a reader about the MOTM reference is with regards to that Australian chap who also does watch reviews on youtube. Quite enjoyed this post, especially the look on your face when you think there's something in the woods... You look as out of place there as I would wearing a suit to a high class restaurant. signed the watch wearing bushman ;-)

Another great bang for buck/class to consider is the Seagull 1963 bi compax chronograph(aka the D304): hardly more expensive than an SKX, great vintage look, and the manual movement, although made in China, is based on the legendary column wheel Venus 175. Since I'm a bit of an addict I'm also considering the GORGEOUS Tudor MiniSub at the moment, gosh that's a nice watch! Nice list TGV. I would put the 1016 Explorer at No. 1 and Speedy Reduced No 2. Thanks.

I believe I have 6.5 inch wrists and my favorite watch is the 42mm Explorer II. Prefer it to the sub most of the time.

I know my wrist is smaller than yours. I always had problems of finding the right watch! I am setting at 40 mm to about 50. Usually I pay cash for them I am looking atm to purchase a higher end watch aiming at Rolex. I can do a payment plan because I know in this economy I can be at this local job for years at least. Thanks for the videos. I do always enjoy them!

If you have to get a payment plan for a watch, you can't afford it.

I love my marathons. I have the GSAR but now I also have the smaller general purpose mechanical in inox with the 2801. Very tough, accurate, compact and comfortable and marathon offer really nice selection of bands for it. It is a 16mm strap and may seems small but on the wrist it fit pretty much anyone including people with larger wrist. The marathons are the watches I wear when sleeping every night since It's the only lume that will be visible at any time during the night. There is no better lume than tritium for me.

I previously had a Citizen, which was about 34 mm, and was able to fit into it: a bi-directional bezel and digital displays, and it was perfectly readable. If they still sold it, I would buy it again in a heart beat.

Great video! I have a 6.5" wrist and man, do I hate this big watch trend! I'd really like to get me a mid-price diver, but I simply can't find a nice one in a fitting size...greetings from Berlin! :)

Might be worth looking at a Casio MTD-1053D if you don't mind having a quartz dive watch. It is ideal for the smaller wrist and is water resist to 200m. It has a screw in crown and caseback and is around 38mm and 9mm thickness. Anti clockwise rotating bezel which is quite solid. There are two versions of the watch, the classic black version and also a blue version which has a sunburst effect when the light catches it. Stainless steel bracelet with double push button clasp. The price is incredible too at below £50 here in the UK on Ebay UK. A really good watch for the price and excellent quality.

Interesting list. Not sure I'd agree with all (of course we all have our preferences). For example while I like your comments on the DateJust I'd still put the Explorer 1 instead. I do like that you mentioned the CW Trident - a good choice there. While I don't think they'd on the list, two watches I've owned in the past that were both 38mm that I really liked were a simple 3 hand Blancpain (with the F Piguet mvmt), and a Chronoswiss Kairos. Of course Patek makes some beautiful watches in that size. And I'd love to own a classic Brequet (one of my all time favorite brands) in that size range. I think too that there are some Grand Seikos that fall in the 38mm range that I'd probably include in my list of top 10. Cheers, John

Great list, as I am also in that range (38-40mm). My only dissagreement is that you spent to places for Seiko. I definitely put on very high place Nomos (I am owner of Ludwig Datum 38). It has a whole range of 38s (Tangente, Luddwig, Orion, Metro) and Club (36mm). Also JLC and Zenith have great pieces in that dimensions.

Thanks for this video...38mm-42mm is my sweet spot.

More important than case size is dial size. Mine range from 36mm to 28 mm. Most dive watches are about 30 mm, large clunky watches with a small dial because of the bezel. Lug to lug is also important because you could have a large round wrist or a smaller flat one. I think there should be 1/4” of skin showing on either side of the lugs.

I forgot to mention, TGV, are you aware of the Speedmaster Racing line of watches by Omega? It is essentially the same size as the Speedmaster reduced, while listed as 40mm, it's actually only 38mm when you measure it without the crown. It wears like a smaller watch. It doesn't pretend to be the "Moon watch" but rather a very smart, beautiful, modern chronograph. Absolutely beautiful little piece, I really really believe you should take a look at one in person, it's such a solid design and shape. I believe as the trend of watches retreats back to smaller traditional diameters, the Speedmaster Racing will be very well positioned.

+Fred T Hi Fred, I am aware of them. I will take another look, thank you for reminding me, excellent point. Best regards, TGV

Smashing list of watches there, i think the Rolex Datejust would take number 1 for me (not that I own it, purely hypothetical), it's the ultimately classic. I've always thought the Speedmaster Reduced looks a little awkward at that size, the left and right subdials are too close to the edge and it looks a bit unbalanced. The 38mm Oris John Coltrane is a sleek dress watch with those blue train tracks. I come to accept small watches aren''t for me, although I too have small wrists, I'm a big guy at 6ft and they just look too small on me.

my watch wearing wrist is 6.25'' and 38mm is my sweet spot, I have a 41mm Sinn EZM 3 that wears great as well but I don't want to go bigger. I considered the 37.5mm Planet Ocean Ceramic but it just seems a bit too thick. I have a 36mm Railmaster which is are rare but another excellent choice if you can get your hands one one. The midsize SMP just seems a bit too small for a diver watch for me. Nomos and Grand Seiko SBGR051/53 are also in my top 10.
@KenCooperonline9 жыл бұрын
If I haven't said it before, you've convinced me that smaller diameters (below 40mm in my case) are something I can pull off. The smallest of my collection (the Seiko SNK803) is about 37mm and it fits comfortably and looks good.

Hi TGV, thanks for the review, I agree with the Rolex as well, mine looks and feels terrific. I don't have any of those larger watches, they just don't seem to fit me.Excellent job, keep it up.
