I had a friend used to work with in the mid-late 90s who was Russian whose parents emigrated to Brooklyn/Brighton beach in the 1970s. Was talking with him one night after work about Barbarossa (which I've always been fascinated by) and he told me his grandfather was an infantryman and survived but 3 of his 4 brothers in the Red Army died in combat. The Red Army (and I daresay the Wehrmacht) had thousands of 'Saving Private Ryan' stories where families lost multiple sons (and daughters). It was the worst single conflict in history

The Russian performance is surprisingly poor in 2022, considering they are viewed as among the top 3 strongest military powers in the world today. There is also the reluctance to find out or acknowledge Soviet propaganda from the period and what they were up to under the first 20-30 years of 'socialist' ideology. The Brits and Americans also remain very quiet about nasty things they had done in the war, before and after.

(Churchill said Italy would be the soft underbelly.. . . .NOT ! ) Italy was a tough & stubborn gut, because the titanic German forces, and the highly talented German ground soldiers, with German leaders as General Albert Kesselring!, a highly able, and ferocious German opponent, fought the allies inch by inch! In hindsight, this was a waste of a year! Anyway, the US, along with the UK, the Aussies, & Anzacs, landed on Italy, and fought all the way to Munich, and helped liberate the HELL of Dachau camp, and others. And, that was just a small part of it. (too bad we don't have the benefit of more hind-sight!.. . . ) US General George Patton was right! Keep pushing to Moscow and help Russia to become a free country. Anyway, my son and I still have my dads Nazi war weapons, as souvenirs. To this day, they smell like industrial war: It is hard to describe the smell & feel: Its like a burnt industrial, over-worked synthetic-oil type of smell, mixed with coal & cordite, and it is very cold. The weight is heavy, for its volume. There is no aroma/feel, quite like it, except maybe a burning drill press, a carbon bit, forcing its way through endless stainless steel, and fire, and then frozen. And the smell is still there. I still cannot find a way to accurately describe the industrial smell/ taste/feel, in which these tools of war, invade the senses. . I suppose blood must be in there somewhere too.. . . . . Anyway, time to let all that go, again.

I really can't agree at all with the idea that they should have kept pushing towards Moscow. The Soviet Union had the biggest and most capable land army in the world by 1945. It would have prolonged the war by years in an uncertain victory and would have lead to the complete destruction of Europe as well as tens of millions of more people dying. Seems like the idea of a madman that wants to wipe out Europe off the map completely.

Uh no. Glantz himself talks about the asinine idea that the West should've waged war against the Soviet Union immediately after Germany (or later Japan) surrendered. The Soviet's far out numbered the Western Allies and they had far more experience. It would've ended with the Soviets marching into Madrid, not the other way around.

Though women were initially barred from combat, Soviet Premier Joseph Stalin issued an order on October 8, 1941 to deploy three women's air force units, including the 588th regiment. The regiment, formed by Major Marina Raskova and led by Major Yevdokia Bershanskaya, was made up primarily of women volunteers in their late teens and early twenties." @@samugote Back when I went to high school we had Veterans of WW II as our teachers. When it came to the atrocities perpetrated on the peoples of Europe by the Nazi regime, they did not hold back. My home room teacher was in the Army and his unit liberated one of the death camps. He took a bunch of photos and had them turned into slides for his classes on that period. Unlike pampered students of today we saw the world through the eyes of men who lived it. My Dad was at Pearl Harbor when it was bombed, and his ship had various roles during the war. During the operations to take Saipan, they witnessed Japanese civilians throwing themselves from the cliffs into the sea below, women and children. The Marines that landed reported seeing Japanese soldiers committing hara-kiri or making mad Banzai charges against well dug in and defended positions. I went to high school before all of these weeping sister teachers came on scene and started to rewrite our WW II history. They did not think that the children needed to be taught about things like Custer's Last Stand and what led up to it, or the many massacres of native tribes just so they could get to the gold under their land. The USA was brutal when they needed to be, but, there were some who took it too far. I am just shy my 70th birthday, we were exposed to things that today's way of thinking is not acceptable. You might say we were the last generation that was taught the truth about US and World History, the good things and the bad. Stay Safe, Stay Healthy and enjoy the upcoming weekend.

The Soviets developed a brutally effective system of warfare emphasizing close quarters combat. The Soviets built 6.5 MILLION submachine guns, such as the Ppsh-41 and PPS-43. These submachine guns became icons of Soviet Army resistance. Every rifle company had at least full platoon of these submachine gunners with all other platoons having at least two or three submachine gunners along with the DP light machine guns in every platoon. Rifle Brigades had a company of submachine gunners. Soviet tank rider battalions were armed with submachine guns riding mounted on tanks only getting off their tanks to engage German defenders in close quarters combat. Urban combat and close quarters assaults on German to clear trenches and fortifications utilized the superior firepower of these mass produced Soviet submachine guns. This close quarters combat system was developed from the Soviet experiences in the Finnish war. General Chuikov developed the assault techniques with assault teams of 80 to 100 men armed with submachine guns, a few light DP machine guns and Maxim guns, about three antitank rifles, and sapper teams with grenades and satchel charges. These assault teams would have an antitank gun blast a hole in a building and about ten men with submachine guns and grenades made the initial assault while others were in an overwatch position. The rest of the follow on team made its way into the building to secure it, clearing the German defenders out floor by floor with submachine gun fire, grenades and satchel charges. When the whole building was cleared the heavy and light machine gun teams fortified the building against counterattacks. These assaults were very brutal often ending in grenades, submachine gun bursts, bayonets and sharpened spades. This type of fighting was how Stalingrad was fought but also became widespread as the German Wehrmacht hated these close quarters fighting. Soviet partisans and cavalry units used the submachine gun in huge numbers. Cavalry divisions ranged far and wide in the German rear areas. The cavalry often rested during the day. The Soviet cavalry traveled or attacked German Wehrmacht units at night along main supply routes and railways. Partisans in the railway wars used the Ppsh-41 for ambushes and meeting engagements with German security divisions. This Soviet irregular partisan warfare of cavalry raids and guerrilla attacks are important because it influenced the Chinese, North Koreans, Vietminh and later NVA/Vietcong. The Soviets figured out ways of getting in close quarters, with lots of mass produced bullet hoses to spray down their enemies in a hailstorm of bullets. These aggressive assaults worked well at achieving FIRE SUPERIORITY over superior German Wehrmacht and later Western Armies or Western allies. The Soviets perfected partisan warfare and raiding with their cavalry. Irregular warfare became the standard blueprint of how the the Soviets defeated the German Wehrmacht but also for the bloody wars in the Chinese Civil War, Korean War, French Indochina war and Vietnam war. The Soviets found that high levels of bloody attrition from close quarters ambushes, raids, and meeting engagements negated Western technological superiority in artillery, airpower, and armor causing a military stalemate. These Soviet pioneered close quarters combat attacks were made for guerrilla warfare with bullet hoses, like the Ppsh-41 and later AK-47 assault rifles. Attrition of western armies from these communist close quarters attacks caused a stalemated bloody war where the political support quickly drained away in the Western country. Mass conscript militia communist armies using mass produced automatic weapons in guerrilla warfare caused impossible problems for western armies. The German Wehrmacht forces hardly saw a Soviet cavalry raid or partisan ambush until they were in a kill zone of automatic fire from these mass produced submachine guns. The German detachment was quickly killed. The Soviet partisans and cavalry left quickly to predesignated hiding spots before German relief forces came. This same type of condition was repeated over and over during the Korean war, where American infantry patrols had problems with North Korean andd Chinese troops armed with burp guns. The Chinese and North Koreans attacked at night, used road blocks to cut off lines of retreat, and used infilitrators to hide in refugee columns. The NVA and Vietcong did many of these same partisan techniques in their guerrilla warfare against the French and Americans. So if you read this far, you now have some general idea why the Soviets defeated Germany, the American supported Nationalist Chinese lost the Chinese Civil war, and why the Korean and Vietnam wars became stalemated quagmire wars. The Soviet-Finnish war and battle of of Stalingrad and countless other urban and partisan battles brought the importance of mass produced bullet hoses, like the Ppsh-41 and AK-47 assault rifle, in shaping the military history of the 20th century. It is no accident that the Ppsh-41, the PPS-43, and Chinese or Warsaw Pact allies produced enormous quantities of these submachine guns in the tens of millions and an estimated 100 million AK-47's. Bullet hoses at close quarters are highly efficient means of killing your better trained and equipped enemies in a hailstorm of bullets.

It was down to morals and being democratic as countries during war time. However tanks with more behind and huge numbers were used so if one gets knocked out another has enough time to advance with lots of tanks and good speed to out flaked, make advances to knock it out and then to overwhelm Germany who could nowhere near keep with tank production.

I don't agree with the intro. It wasn't a war of ideologies, trust me, most of the Soviet people couldn't give a damn about the Communist regime or ideology, they fought for their LIVES! Everyone knew that the nazis came to exterminate, it was a genocide, entire towns and cities were levelled, villages were burned and the people of the villages burned a live, raped or brought back to labor camps, cities were under sieges, people used to eat rats, paper, drink snow... Everyone knew, that if they didn't fought back they would die anyway, so everyone (and i mean literally almost everyone) went to fight. Men of all ages, women, boys and girls enrolled in the army and those who couldn't were building barricades, trences, factories and weapons day and night. Every single family in Russia has been touched by this tragedy. It wasn't a war of ideologies, it was the great war for survival. Sometimes is very hard for westerners to understand the Russians spirit, and i know why. But it really must be understood first and foremost in order to understand how they WON the war and how they were wawing their flag over the Rechstag in the May of 1945.

One thing I am confused about is I keep seeing that the Germans actually outnumbered the Soviets, or equaled them, in manpower and that it wasn't until after Kursk that they really began to be outnumbered, and even then, due to poor German intelligence not seeing where the Soviets were building up troops, that the Germans were not defeated due to the Soviets just having wave after unlimited wave to throw at them. However, then Glantz here is saying that the German forces were running into huge numbers of Soviet forces being thrown at them by Zhukov. So does that kinda refute the notion that the Soviets didn't have huge numbers...?

Fresh formations and thrown into battles sequentially, not at the same time.
@nicholasglieco21553 жыл бұрын
The Germans were outnumbered in every offensive operation. The thing is... Soviets were able to conceal entire ARMIES from the Germans. The Germans continuously underestimated the Soviet numbers and were baffled that there were fresh formations appearing in front of them after they encircle millions of Soviets. No one really knew this stuff except the Soviets until 70 years after the war and some soviet war archives were opened to public. So if the Germans didn't know at the time they were outnumbered, of course it won't be in the history books they write. In short, Germans tactics good, operational intelligence bad.
@WheelsRCool3 жыл бұрын

OK ... so, on the question of taking Moscow: It is my understanding that the Reds won the Russian Civil War against the Whites because, even though the Whites forces were larger - they were divided. With the Reds holding it and Moscow being the rail hub for Russia - what Trotsky did was to put most of his troops on trains - rush them out one line to fight one White Army - which he would then outnumber locally - crush it - then put them all back on the trains and rush them off to fight another White Army and crush it. What was the importance of Moscow as a rail hub in 1941? If Moscow was still as important a rail hub then - would the loss of it have a severe impact on Soviets logistics and communication? The other thing I've heard is that Moscow was the center of administrative and political power in the Soviet Union and had it been lost - the Communist government might have collapsed - or - at least not been able to control the country as well. I believe I heard Glanz say that Stalin was preparing to shift the government to another location - but would that really have worked without the infrastructure of Moscow? Could it be that those Russians Glanz knows who thought they would have lost the war had Moscow been taken - know more about things that aren't documented than Glanz? .
@marzbigman5 жыл бұрын
Hi not a historian just a history buff like everyone else, and I figured that your comment deserved to be responded to as it brings up some interesting points. To my understanding Moscow was still the center of the Soviet rail network, however by the time of the battle of Moscow most of the soviet government was moved to the eastern city of Kuybishev. The soviets were entirely aware of the possibility of Moscow being captured, in fact they had already agreed before the battle to continue the war if this came into fruition. It is important to remember that the Soviet Union was a totalitarian dictatorship. As long as the regime stays in power they will not surrender, Stalin and most of the Soviet leadership does not care about it's citizens. As long as they have the capacity to wage war why would they surrender? By the end of 1941 the Soviets managed to move over 1,500 of it's factories to the east (Urals), this included about 16,000,000 of it's citizens. The point I'm am trying to make is I do not see the Germans winning the war if they take Moscow. The deeper they go into Russia the worse their supplies get, and their oil situation is still desperate. Hope to hear your thoughts. :)

The problem is not that the Germans take Moscow, it is that the battle of Moscow would look like Stalingrad on Coke, meth and Heroine. It would be a slow grind that the Soviets would win. Almost forgot, after my tongue n cheek, thanks for not disabling conversation. You will get cranks and trolls and fanatics etc; but you also get credibility for the exchange. I'll subscribe and hope to hear more on two topics: First is the involvement and effect of other Axis countries? Also though not directly Soviet-German, the overall position/status of the Vichy French? (subscribing now)

I have given up the video as the quality all round of showing this is dreadful. That is a great shame.. message to video producers - practice shooting and recording this beforehand next time to remedy all these numerous faults.

These videos, especially the Russian losses never address why the Russian casualties were so much higher than the German casualties. Here I am not just talking about Barbarossa (1941), but throughout the Ostkrieg. And even in the great Russin victories, their losses were enormous. Of course, there were many factors, but there was one overriding factor, and the Soviets as well as the Russians today do not want to admit it.

@@johnpaul3099 There are a lot of reasons suggested for why the Red Army losses were so high. Many have some validity. But I think you have to get down to basics. In World War II as in World War I, artillery was the real killer. Now data on the Ostkrieg is not as available as for the War in the West, but the American and British data suggest that about half of casualties and some 60 percent of combat mortalities were due to artillery. (I suspect that the numbers were even higher in the Ostkrieg because the air forces in the East were more limited.) At any rate, I think you have to look at the artillery to examine the enormous Red Army casualties. The discussion is somewhat muddled by World War II videos. Aircraft especially Allied aircraft had cameras providing a wealth of camera footage. Filming the impact of an artillery barrage has very limited film footage. There is a lot of footage of the guns firing. Very little of the shells hitting.

@@johnpaul3099 Don't get me wrong, I m not saying that Red Army artillery was ineffective. I think it is well established that artillery was the real killer on the battlefield. What I am looking at here is why there was such a disparity in German and Soviet casualties. I think you are correct about the Germans. But what was their killing instrument? I suspect it was their superior artillery. But notably, the heavy Soviet casualties in Barbarossa were extreme but persisted throughout the Ostkrieg. Just look at Kursk when the Red Army was fighting behind rings of prepared defenses. Still, their losses were greater than the Germans. Barbarossa was not only important in the enormous Soviet casualties but two often ignored matters: 1) Most of the Siviet ammunition plants were in Ukraine. Abd these plants could not be easily moved. The result was a severe shortage of ammunition (one reason the Red SArmy 1941-42 Winter offensive did not go further). It is why ammunition was high on Soviet Lend-Lease priorities. 2) Barbarossa destroyed much of the trained Red Army professionals. The Soviets survived because of their ability to quickly raise new formations. There were, however, deficiencies in many of these units, especially the positions requiring education and training. This really affected the artillery where math was important. These men could not be so easily or quickly trained.
