Part 1: Dr. Khaled Abou El Fadl presents his original Quranic commentary on Surah 19, Maryam, as part of the ongoing Project Illumine: Light of the Quran series at The Usuli Institute (www.usuli.org).
Project Illumine is a year-long intensive immersion into the unique moral messages in each of the 114 surahs (chapters) of the Quran, the fruit of this scholar's lifetime relationship with the Quran. This is the twenty-sixth chapter in the series. This is not the traditional line-by-line exegesis, but a chapter-by-chapter thematic approach that seeks to rediscover the original meaning received by the early Muslims that sparked their passion such that they transformed from desert dwellers to civilization builders. It is an investigation of the timeless moral and ethical lessons of the Quran then applied to our modern day. In the introduction, Executive Director Grace Song shares an email she received from a convert of 2 years, who converted after the age of 60, and addresses the backwards messages this convert received from a new Muslim class. Recorded at The Usuli Institute on 3 April 2021.

And We gave him judgement [while yet] a boy) Q19;13 "wahananan min ladunna wazakatan wakana taqiyya" (And affection from Us and purity, and he was fearing of Allah) Q19;14 "wabarran biwalidayhi walam yakun jabbaran asiyya" (And dutiful to his parents, and he was not a disobedient tyrant) Q19;15 "wasalamun alayhi yawma wulida wayawma yamutu wayawma yub'athu hayya" (And peace be upon him the day he was born and the day he dies and the day he is raised alive) - discourse about Yahya, his parents and relatives, including his mother and relationship to Maryam. 54:23 Q19;16 "wa-udh'kur fi al-kitabi maryama idhi intabadhat min ahliha makanan sharqiyya" (And mention, [O Muhammad], in the Book [the story of] Mary, when she withdrew from her family to a place toward the east) Q19;17 "fa-ittakhadhat min dunihim hijaban fa-arsalna ilayha ruhana fatamathala laha basharan sawiyya" (And she took, in seclusion from them, a screen. Then We sent to her Our Angel, and he represented himself to her as a well-proportioned man) 57:00 details of the necessary backstory/context surrounding Maryam (and Yahya). 1:04:51 Q19;18 "qalat inni a'udhu bil-rahmani minka in kunta taqiyya" (She said, "Indeed, I seek refuge in the Most Merciful from you, [so leave me], if you should be fearing of Allah"). Q19;19 "qala innama ana rasulu rabbiki li-ahaba laki ghulaman zakiyya" (He said, "I am only the messenger of your Lord to give you [news of] a pure boy") Q19;20 "qalat anna yakunu li ghulamun walam yamsasni basharun walam aku baghiyya" (She said, "How can I have a boy while no man has touched me and I have not been unchaste?") Q19;21 "qala kadhaliki qala rabbuki huwa alayya hayyinun walinaj'alahu ayatan lilnnasi warahmatan minna wakana amran maqdiyya" (He said, "Thus [it will be]; your Lord says, 'It is easy for Me, and We will make him a sign to the people and a mercy from Us. And it is a matter [already] decreed' "). 1:09:58 Maryam's dilemma in this situation: Q19;22 "fahamalathu fa-intabadhat bihi makanan qasiyya" (So she conceived him, and she withdrew with him to a remote place). 1:12:55 Q19;23 "fa-ajaaha al-makhadu ila jidh'i al-nakhlati qalat yalaytani mittu qabla hadha wakuntu nasyan mansiyya" (And the pains of childbirth drove her to the trunk of a palm tree. She said, "Oh, I wish I had died before this and was in oblivion, forgotten"). 1:14:37 Q19;24 "fanadaha min tahtiha alla tahzani qad ja'ala rabbuki tahtaki sariyya" (But he called her from below her, "Do not grieve; your Lord has provided beneath you a stream") 1:15:56 Q19;25 "wahuzzi ilayki bijidh'i al-nakhlati tusaqit alayki rutaban janiyya" (And shake toward you the trunk of the palm tree; it will drop upon you ripe, fresh dates) - the principle of personal effort to receive God's blessings & mercy. 1:19:05 Q19;26 "fakuli wa-ish'rabi waqarri aynan fa-imma tarayinna mina al-bashari ahadan faquli inni nadhartu lilrrahmani sawman falan ukallima al-yawma insiyya" (So eat and drink and be contented. And if you see from among humanity anyone, say, 'Indeed, I have vowed to the Most Merciful abstention, so I will not speak today to [any] man' "). 1:23:03 Q19;27 "fa-atat bihi qawmaha tahmiluhu qalu yamaryamu laqad ji'ti shayan fariyya" (Then she brought him to her people, carrying him. They said, "O Mary, you have certainly done a thing unprecedented"). 1:24:10 Q19;28 "yaukh'ta haruna ma kana abuki im'ra-a sawin wama kanat ummuki baghiyya" ("O sister of Aaron, your father was not a man of evil, nor was your mother unchaste"). 1:26:38 Q19;29 "fa-asharat ilayhi qalu kayfa nukallimu man kana fi al-mahdi sabiyya" (So she pointed to him. They said, "How can we speak to one who is in the cradle a child?") 1:26:57 Q19;30 "qala inni abdu al-lahi ataniya al-kitaba waja'alani nabiyya" ([Jesus] said, "Indeed, I am the servant of Allah. He has given me the Scripture and made me a prophet"). 1:27:25 Q19;31 "waja'alani mubarakan ayna ma kuntu wa-awsani bil-salati wal-zakati ma dum'tu hayya" ("And He has made me blessed wherever I am and has enjoined upon me prayer and zakah as long as I remain alive"). 1:27:32 Q19;32 "wabarran biwalidati walam yaj'alni jabbaran shaqiyya" ("And [made me] dutiful to my mother, and He has not made me a wretched tyrant"). 1:27:41 Q19;33 "wal-salamu alayya yawma wulidttu wayawma amutu wayawma ub'athu hayya" ("And peace is on me the day I was born and the day I will die and the day I am raised alive") - same compassionate terms used in Ayah #15 to describe Yahya (John the Baptist) in this Surah. 1:29:12 the uniqueness of the Qur'anic discourse on Maryam presented - the debate about her being a prophetess or someone who received miracles/Sadiqa and how her existence challenged Jewish tradition. 1:37:25 the significance of the message of the chapter at that point in the revelation to the Makkans. 1:40:05 the challenges of a society thoroughly based on patriarchy, focused on the occult and black magic confronting Maryam, a single mother without means - who acted as a prototype/archetype to the many Makkan women who converted to Islam (examples from the less well known stories of the Sirah/biography expounded on in detail by the Professor). 1:49:29 the requirement for a serious reappraisal of the role of women in Islam at the time of the Prophet - the importance of unpackaging Muslim history from patriarchal and orientalist influences. 1:50:40 the precedence set in Muslim law/Fiqh concerning Maryam. 1:53:19 Q19;34 "dhalika isa ub'nu maryama qawla al-haqi alladhi fihi yamtarun" (That is Jesus, the son of Mary - the word of truth about which they are in dispute) Q19;35 "ma kana lillahi an yattakhidha min waladin sub'hanahu idha qada amran fa-innama yaqulu lahu kun fayakun" (It is not [befitting] for Allah to take a son; exalted is He! When He decrees an affair, He only says to it, "Be," and it is). 1:55:05 Q19;37 "fa-ikh'talafa al-ahzabu min baynihim fawaylun lilladhina kafaru min mashhadi yawmin azim" (Then the factions differed [concerning Jesus] from among them, so woe to those who disbelieved - from the scene of a tremendous Day) - referencing the 3 hypostases in Christianity. 1:56:00 Q19;38 "asmi' bihim wa-absir yawma yatunana lakini al-zalimuna al-yawma fi dalalin mubin" (How [clearly] they will hear and see the Day they come to Us, but the wrongdoers today are in clear error) - powerfully beautiful language noted here. 1:57:30 Q19;41 "wa-udh'kur fi al-kitabi ib'rahima innahu kana siddiqan nabiyya" (And mention in the Book [the story of] Abraham. Indeed, he was a man of truth and a prophet) - the alternative POV now of the child, Ibrāhīm, towards his parent. 1:58:45 Q19;41 "...innahu kana siddiqan nabiyya" Q19;42 "idh qala li-abihi yaabati lima ta'budu ma la yasma'u wala yub'siru wala yugh'ni anka shay" ([Mention] when he said to his father, "O my father, why do you worship that which does not hear and does not see and will not benefit you at all?) Q19;43 "yaabati inni qad jaani mina al-'il'mi ma lam yatika fa-ittabi'ni ahdika siratan sawiyya" O my father, indeed there has come to me of knowledge that which has not come to you, so follow me; I will guide you to an even path) Q19;44 "yaabati la ta'budi al-shaytana inna al-shaytana kana lilrrahmani asiyya" (O my father, do not worship Satan. Indeed Satan has ever been, to the Most Merciful, disobedient) [Timestamps for Surah Maryam continued in PART 2]

[PART 2 - Surah Maryam timestamps continued] 1:59:14 Ayah #45: "ya-abati inni akhafu ay yamassaka adhabun min ar-rahmani fatakoona lishaytaani waliyya" ("O my father, I fear that a punishment from the Most Gracious will afflict you, and you become an ally of the devil [in Hellfire]"). 2:02:08 Ayah #46: "qala araghibun anta an alihati ya ib'raaheemu la-in lam tantahi la-arjumannaka wa-uh'jur'ni maliyya" ([His father] He said, "Are you renouncing my gods, O Abraham? If you do not desist, I will stone you. So leave me alone for a while") - the ancient near Eastern practice of throwing stones as a form of ostracism/disavowal (the last residue of this being the stoning of the pillars representing Satan during the pilgrimage \ Hajj to Mecca). 2:04:43 Ayah #47: "qala salamun alayka sa-astaghfiru laka rabbi innahu kana bi hafiyya" ([Abraham] He said, "Peace be upon you. I will ask my Lord to forgive you; He has been Kind to me"). 2:05:33 Ayah #48: "wa a'tazilukum wa-ma tad'oona min dooni al-lahi wa-ad'u rabbi asa alla akoona bidu'ai rabbi shaqiyya" ("And I will withdraw from you, and from what you pray to instead of God. And I will pray to my Lord, and I hope I will not be disappointed in my prayer to my Lord"). 2:07:06 Ayah #49: "falamma i'tazalahum wa-ma ya'budoona min dooni al-lahi wahabna lahu is'haqa waya'qooba wakullan ja'alna nabiyya" (When he withdrew from them, and from what they worship besides God, We granted him Isaac and Jacob. And each We made a prophet). 2:07:46 Ayah #50: "wawahabna lahum min rahmatina waja'alna lahum lisana sid'qin aliyya" (And We gave them freely of Our mercy, and gave them a noble reputation of truth). 2:09:11 Ayah #51: "wa udh'kur fil-kitabi moosa innahu kana mukh'lasan wakaana rasoolan nabiyya" (And mention in the Scripture Moses. He was dedicated. He was a messenger and a prophet). 2:09:30 Ayah #53: "wawahabna lahu min rahmatina akhahu haroona nabiyya" (And We granted him, out of Our mercy, his brother Aaron, a prophet). 2:10:24 Ayah #54: "wa udh'kur fil-kitaabi is'ma'eela innahu kaana sadeeq al-wa'di wakana rasoolan nabiyya" (And mention in the Scripture Ishmael. He was true to his promise, and was a messenger, a prophet) Ayah #55: "wa kaana yamuru ahlahu bis-salaati waz-zakaati wakaana inda rabbihi mardiyya" (And he used to command his people prayer and alms and was pleasing to his Lord) 2:11:35 Ayah #56: "wa udh'kur fil-kitaabi id'reesa innahu kaana siddiqan nabiyya" (And mention in the Scripture, Idris [Enoch]. Indeed, he was a man of truth and a prophet) Ayah #57: "warafa'naahu makaanan aliyya" (And We raised him to a high position) 2:12:52 Ayah #58: "oola-ika alladheena an'am al-lahu alayhim min an-nabiyina min dhurriyyaati adama wamimman hamalna ma'a noohin wamin dhurriyyati ib'raheema wa-is'raaeela wamimman hadayna waj'tabayna idha tut'la alayhim ayaatu ar-rahmani kharru sujjadan wabukiyya" (These are some of the prophets God has blessed, from the descendants of Adam, and from those We carried with Noah, and from the descendants of Abraham and Israel, and from those We guided and selected. Whenever the revelations of the Most Gracious are recited to them, they would fall down, prostrating and weeping). 2:15:00 Ayah #59: "fakhalafa min ba'dihim khalfun ada'u as-salaata wattaba'u ash-shahawati fasawfa yalqawna ghayya" (But they were succeeded by generations who neglected prayer and followed their desires; they will meet evil). 2:16:09 Ayah #60: "illa man taba waamana wa'amila saleehan fa-oola-ika yadkhuloona al-janata wala yuz'lamoona shaya" (Except for those who repent and believe and do righteousness; they will enter Paradise and will not be wronged in the least). 2:16:40 Ayah #64: "wama natanazzalu illa bi-amri rabbeeka lahu ma bayna aydeena wa-ma khalfana wa-ma bayna dhaalika wa-ma kaana rabbuka nasiyya" ([Gabriel said], "We do not descend except by the command of your Lord. His is what is before us, and what is behind us, and what is between them. Your Lord is never forgetful"). 2:18:30 Ayah #65: "rabb us-samawaati wal-ardi wa-ma baynahuma fa-u'bood'hu was'tabir li'ibadatihi hal ta'lamu lahu samiyya" ("Lord of the heavens and the earth and what is between them. So worship Him, and persevere in His service. Do you know of anyone equal to Him?") 2:19:45 Ayah #68: "fawarabbeeka lanahshurannahum wash-shayaatina thumma lanuh'dirannahum hawla jahannaama jithiyya" ("By your Lord, We will round them up, and the devils, then We will bring them around Hell, on their knees"). 2:20:12 Ayah #69: "thumma lananzi'anna min kulli shi'atin ayyuhum ashaddu ala ar-raahmani itiyya" ("Then, out of every sect, We will snatch those most defiant to the Most Merciful") Ayah #70: "thumma lanahnu a'lamu bi-alladheena hum awla biha siliyya" ("We are fully aware of those most deserving to scorch in it"). 2:21:56 Ayah #71: "wa-in minkum illa wariduha kaana ala rabbeeka hatman maqdiyya" (There is not one of you but will go down to it. This has been an unavoidable decree of your Lord) - discussion of everyone experiencing hell to some degree. 2:24:45 Ayah #75: "qul man kaana fid-dalaalati falyamdud lahu ar-raahmanu maddan hatta idhaa ra-aw ma yu'adoona imm al-'adhaba wa-imm as-sa'ata fasaya'lamoona man hoowa sharrun makanan wa-ad'afu junda" (Say, "Whoever is in error, the Most Merciful will lead him on. Until, when they see what they were promised-either the punishment [in this world], or the Hour [of resurrection]. Then they will know who was in worse position and weaker in forces"). 2:25:17 Ayah #74: "wakam ahlakna qablahum min qarnin hum ahsanu atha-athan wari'ya" (How many a generation have We destroyed before them, who surpassed them in riches and splendour?) 2:26:25 Ayah #77: "afara-ayta alladhee kafara biayatina waqaala lautayanna malan wawalada" (Have you seen him who denied Our revelations, and said, "I will be given wealth and children [in the next life]?") Ayah #78: "attala'a al-ghayba ami ittakhaadha inda ar-raahmani ahda" (Did he look into the future, or did he receive a promise from the Most Merciful?) 2:28:10 Ayah #64 "...wa-ma kaana rabbuka nasiyya" (..And never is your Lord forgetful) - the Prophet's explanation for this Ayah focused on Allah's mercy and hence the importance of omission and burden of proof in Islamic jurisprudence. 2:30:55 Ayah #73: "..."ay yul-fariqayni khayrun" maqaama wa-ahsanu nadiyya" (..."Which of [our] two parties is best in position and best in association?") 2:34:35 Ayah #83: "alaam tara annaa arsalna ash-shayatina al al-kafireena ta-uzzuhum azza" (Have you not considered how We dispatch the devils against the disbelievers, exciting them [to evil] with incitement?) - according to the Prophetic Hadith/report: "Whoever brings happiness to a believer has pleased Allah. Whoever pleases Allah, then they have entered into a covenant with the Rahman/Beneficent". 2:39:45 the content of the Surah returning to the theme of the absurdity of God having a son in Ayah #92: "wa-ma yanbaghi lirraahmani an yattakhidha walada" (It is not fitting for the Most Merciful to have a son) Ayah #93: "in kullu man fis-samawati wal-ardi illa ati ar-raahmani abda" (There is none in the heavens and the earth but will come to the Most Merciful as a servant). 2:41:17 Ayah #96: "inn alladheena amanoo wa'amil us-salihati sayaj'alu lahum ur-rahmanu wudda" (Those who believe and do righteous deeds, the Most Merciful will give them love) - the basis for one of Imam Ali's Adiya/supplications. 2:47:45 Ayah #98: "wakam ahlakna qablahum min qarnin hal tuhissu min'hum min ahadin aw tasma'u lahum rik'za" (How many a generation have We destroyed before them? Can you feel a single one of them, or hear from them the slightest whisper?). 2:48:26 summarisation of Surah Maryam: repeated theme of Rahman emerging into a relationship of Wudd/love; those - men and women - who are loved are afflicted and with perseverance and patience and contentment they transition into those who are chosen; the essential role of archetypical Maryam women for the future of the Muslims. Amen

They said, "O Mary, you have certainly done a thing unprecedented"). 1:24:10 Ayah #28: "yaukh'ta haroona ma kana abuki im'ra-a sawin wama kanat ummuki baghiyya" ("O sister of Aaron, your father was not a man of evil, nor was your mother unchaste"). 1:26:38 Ayah #29: "fa-asharat ilayhi qalu kayfa nukallimu man kana fil-mahdi sabiyya" (So she pointed to him. They said, "How can we speak to one who is in the cradle a child?") 1:26:57 Ayah #30: "qala inni abd ul-lahi ataniy al-kitaba waja'alani nabiyya" ([Jesus] said, "Indeed, I am the servant of Allah. He has given me the Scripture and made me a prophet"). 1:27:25 Ayah #31: "waja'alani mubarakan ayna ma kuntu wa-awsani bis-salati waz-zakati ma dum'tu hayya" ("And He has made me blessed wherever I am and has enjoined upon me prayer and zakah as long as I remain alive"). 1:27:32 Ayah #32: "wabarran biwalidati walam yaj'alni jabbaran shaqiyya" ("And [made me] dutiful to my mother, and He has not made me a wretched tyrant"). 1:27:41 Ayah #33: "was-salamu alayya yawma wulidttu wayawma amutu wayawma ub'athu hayya" ("And peace is on me the day I was born and the day I will die and the day I am raised alive") - same compassionate terms used in Ayah #15 to describe Yahya (John the Baptist) in this Surah. 1:53:19 Ayah #34: "dhalika eesa ub'nu maryama qawl al-haqi alladhee feehi yamtaroon" (That is Jesus, the son of Mary - the word of truth about which they are in dispute) Ayah #35: "ma kana lillahi ay yattakhidha min waladin sub'hanahu idha qada amran fa-innama yaqulu lahu kun fayakun" (It is not [befitting] for Allah to take a son; exalted is He! When He decrees an affair, He only says to it, "Be," and it is). 1:55:05 Ayah #37: "fakh'talaf al-ahzabu min baynihim fawaylun lilladheena kafaroo min mashhadi yawmin azeem" (Then the factions differed [concerning Jesus] from among them, so woe to those who disbelieved - from the scene of a tremendous Day) - referencing the 3 hypostases in Christianity. 1:56:00 Ayah #38: "asmi' bihim wa-absir yawma yatunana lakin ith-thalimoon al-yawma fi dalalin mubeen" (How [clearly] they will hear and see the Day they come to Us, but the wrongdoers today are in clear error) - powerfully beautiful language noted here. 1:57:30 Ayah #41: "wadh'kur fil-kitabi ib'raherma innahu kana siddiqan nabiyya" (And mention in the Book [the story of] Abraham. Indeed, he was a man of truth and a prophet) - the alternative POV now of the child, Ibrāhīm, towards his parent. 1:58:45 Ayah #41: "...innahu kana siddiqan nabiyya" Ayah #42: "idh qala li-abihi ya-abati lima ta'budu ma lay yasma'u wala yub'siru wala yugh'ni anka shay" ([Mention] when he said to his father, "O my father, why do you worship that which does not hear and does not see and will not benefit you at all?) Ayah #43: "ya-abati inni qad jaani min al-'il'mi ma lam yatika fattabi'ni ahdika siratan sawiyya" O my father, indeed there has come to me of knowledge that which has not come to you, so follow me; I will guide you to an even path) Ayah #44: "ya-abati la ta'bud ish-shaytana inn ash-shaytana kana lilrrahmani asiyya" (O my father, do not worship Satan. Indeed Satan has ever been, to the Most Merciful, disobedient) [Surah Maryam timestamps continued - PART 2]
