They use your money for buying science literature databases, for repainting the walls in the rooms you've probably never been to, for buying a new computer for your dean, for keeping your football team or gymnastics club, and my point is - really only a small fraction of the money you pay goes to the professors.

My dad was a prof for decades at UBC and he got such bad reviews on this website 😂 to be fair he LOATHED teaching. He was a researcher (scientist) and entered retirement at 65 because the Dean wanted him to teach more classes. When the Dean made an appointment with him shortly before his 65th birthday, it was to ask my dad about his retirement plans. My dad fully intended to tell the Dean he didn’t want to retire. When he found out that he needed to teach 2 more classes he was like that Pocahontas meme waving goodbye.

@Milfuelle100 2 жыл бұрын
@@dwightschrute4750 The vast majority of professors go into the career for research purposes. Teaching is a mandatory part of it. Professors don’t even NEED to take a single teaching course. They aren’t supposed to be qualified teachers, they’re supposed to be qualified experts in the subjects that they teach and they bring the university $$$ by doing research and such. For example, my dad did a 6-month government-funded agricultural research project in a teensy town about a 10 hour drive from where we lived. I don’t know the details but I know the university also got money for my dad’s research (actually it was multiple science professors from different universities in Canada who participated in this agriculture study).
@dynadwynn

@@Milfuelle100 summed it up pretty well. This is ultimately why you guys are dissatisfied with your teachers - because we don't have to be great teachers, and we want to be researchers in the first place. And God forbid you once learn how much they pay us for teaching you.

I stand by what I say, that professors SHOULD be required to take teaching courses and pedagogy courses. Why shouldn’t they? Universities running like businesses that profit off of academia is nothing new to me, so I get that it can’t be helped that they don’t want to hire actual teachers. Researchers bring in more money/prestige after all. But from a student perspective? Who tf cares how smart or accomplished you are if you can’t prep for your own goddamn lectures? Anyways.

To me it seems pretty obvious that prof Wong is being mostly sarcastic with his comments. I've never even been to the university of Toronto though,so anyone who who's been his student might be able to either confirm or deny that,but the whole "it's be great a if I didn't have to teach anyone but unfortunately I've gotta teach my 2 hours a week to get a paycheck" seems too bold for anyone to say so easily, especially in public. I really liked professor Jung, POL101 was easy to understand and I liked the one assignment a week structure as it was less stressful than heavily-weighted exams. I did however disagree with the marking as many of the assignments were essays with a word limit of 300-500 on complex subjects, then marks were taken off for “not going in depth enough”. There is only so much depth one can provide while abiding by essay format, word limit, and writing about such a complex issue. Overall good class, but the vague marking and expectations were definitely disappointing.

Ouch! Well, I think most of the students who visit and comment on the Rate My Professor site are simply in school to get through it. As an adult who returned to college, I visited the site once and only because I had to drop a class due to a very biased instructor. After viewing the site, I realized my opinion of the controlling dictator was correct: she was described as a psychopathic narcissistic instructor, who de-MAND-ed EVERYONE address her as Dr! Ummm, if you are a professor, normally (and in most cases), you have obtained your Ph.D. So, the title “Professor” kind-of establishes your education level in a student’s mind, I would think.

Okay, obviously SOME folks are offended by my comment: i.e. an opinion based on MY experience. Therefore, let me overtly explain my stance. The use of the title Dr was NOT my sole objection concerning dropping the class; many factors were involved. Based on the video clip, I simply shared ONE aspect of my experience concerning the site “Rate My Professor.” In addition to this, and concerning the esteemed (and earned) title: Dr; most students honor all of their professors. However, when a professor demands the title be used, the act demonstrates a weakness in THEIR being, IN MY OPINION. At the time, I was a student at a community college. I would have been pleased to address most of the associate professors as “Dr.” But to be told to use the address even when simply asking a question in class, instead of saying professor, seems a bit narcissistic. Thus, to better illustrate my point, let me share this. Currently, I attend a highly esteemed learning institution where EVERY professor has earned SERIOUS academic credentials. Hence, each professor I now encounter has earned a RIGHT to be addressed by such a coveted title: Dr. Yet, I have not encountered ONE professor who has demanded their students address them as “Dr.” On the contrary, I have received emails and have conversed with them and they have used their first name to close ALL of the conversations. Therefore, because of their warm personable ability to teach and instruct from a place of security, I will ALWAYS address my current professors as DOCTOR!!! Why? Because they have EARNED such respect due to their ability to treat me, a learner, as one they relate to (or with), rather than condescend. There is a difference in instructing students: showing respect towards the learner GARNERS respect from those who PAY to glean from your professorship.

Do people not realize that most people are only professors so they can receive funding for the things they actually want to do? It's like, "Here we'll give you $xxxxxxx, but you have to teach X classes."

Up to the 1960's less than 5% of the Ontario population graduated from Grade 13 ( equivalent to 1st year university today or higher). Since then standards have declined and marks have gone up - today 28.5% of the population get Bachelors degrees. Many of the "professors" in the Humanities would not have qualified.

Technically a problem with the high schools right? U of T has a fixed admissions average. If high schools are inflating grades that’s on them.

Joseph Wong is conceited. When chairing talks and seminars at U of T that were opened to the public, he kept talking about himself and his achievements and university appointed positions - showing off. A sociologist by training (with a PhD dissertation in healthcare reform in Taiwan), he was appointed by U of T as a prof. of political science. In the aforesaid public talks/seminars he would say he isn't a political scientist even in front of fellow departmental political scientist colleagues.

Yeah, I'm a teaching assistant right now and although I'm inexperienced, I would be concerned if a student came to me and said they felt I was doing something that was hurting the class, and I would really try to evaluate what they were saying and make some changes. I made a video compilation of these kinds of snarky professors: kzbin.info/www/bejne/apvSqaywjr-kr5o

I personal think some of professors in the videos are the most popular Professors in UTM, people wrote mean reviews to them just because of they did not take the course seriously, they should try professor Bailey's eco 200, professor Jerry's sta302 and Professor Daniel's computer science courses to see what are the "real" bird courses in UTM.

I’ve seen people complain about the algebra prof at my school because she has the expectation that they come to class to learn, not play on their phones. I always thought it was weird they even show up to play on their phones since the school is non-attendance taking, like just stay home 😂 the benefit of coming back to college after ten years, seeing high school antics again 😂

"Too" is an adverb, much alike "very", the student was saying she speaks very fast. It was used to describe her action of speaking, a verb. On the other hand "to" is a preposition, and wouldn't make much sense in the context of the student's review. So, it was used correctly by the student. Although seeing professors make simple mistakes is kind of funny, it is a bit scary that they feel this intense need to regain control of the situation by correcting the reviews. Like comments that correct your grammar when they are losing, "Yeah I'm wrong, but at least I can use the correct to, two or too," or in this case when corect you but can't. My condolences to all students that are right but their professor corrects them anyway, and bullies them into submission because of their near unlimited grading power mixed with the fragility of their ego. 😭
