Diana had trust issues. She was frequently betrayed. Even though she had her faults, she was a true humanitarian and NOTHING like M. Diana was doing extraordinary humanitarian work off camera by her mid 20’s.

I was interested to know what happened to Mary Berry and looked her up on the internet. Discovered that when her book came out Prince Charles, as he was then, was livid with her as she had signed confidentiality agreements when she went to work there. The book was banned in the UK and lawyers were after her so she left the UK for Canada. She moved around and much later when the dust was settled she returned to Liverpool where she now lives. That is a very condensed version of what I read. I've really enjoyed you reading this book to us. You are a natural on the screen and when you tease with what you are going to read out, I find myself smiling in response! Thank you for your chat shows.

I’m an OR nurse and I remember having to wear isolation type gear , double gloves, etc , whenever caring for AIDS patients . There was the fear that was seen recently with dealing with COVID patients . So much misinformation and lack of information about how the virus was transmitted . Diana ‘s actions with those patients meant a great deal in that atmosphere.

Of course special protection gear is necessary when operating on patients with highly infectious / easily transmitted diseases or when treating wounds or dealing with bodily fluids. That’s the same today , of course. But in my country the public information was very clear that normal physical contact with AIDS patients was not dangerous and all people I knew (directly and indirectly) had no objections to treating AIDS patients without any special protection. All of that before Diana did it. PS I remember my astonishment about the fuzz that was made about Diana since it was nothing new nor remarkable.

You are correct, my Mother was an OR nurse too. When I was in nursing school myself, that’s when the information and medication for HIV/AIDS treatment had substantially improved. This was in the same timeframe that Freddie Mercury had passed away, and Magic Johnson was diagnosed with HIV, 1991.

I’m a chemist who had to wear full-on bunny suits for clean rooms, but I drew the line when all citizens were required to wear masks that didn’t protect people from viruses 🦠 that are so much smaller than most masks 😷.

This makes me feel creeped out by meg even more to see her strategy, after a year with Cory 'Celebrity chefs' dropped in popularity. She came to the UK hunting someone more famous Harry scoped into her radar she learnt EVERYTHING about him & for 2 years built a story around her life. Bogart, the perfume, the 'love' of Africa, need I say more!?!

I never saw it as a fairy tale marriage, rather a disaster waiting to happen. They had absolutely nothing in common and in every marriage there comes a time when you actually have to talk to one another. They had nothing to talk about. And the ridiculous expectations of the general public for their .’fairy tale’ marriage through which they could live vicariously must have been an enormous pressure on them. And the very public who accused the paparazzi of murder when Diana died are the same public who were desperate for news and photographs and bought all the papers and magazines. Hypocrisy at its highest. And still lessons have not been learned.

Diana pretended to be interested in Charles’ hobbies & interests (fishing, hunting, gardening, art, architecture, reading, country life/Balmoral) to get him to marry her, then after the wedding she dropped the pretense of sharing his interests and tried to get him to drop them all.

We can now see her as a real person , with flaws like anyone else , rather than the saint that she was portrayed as right after her death . Or the poor innocent victim narrative that ran at the time . The simple truth is that Charles and Diana should never have married, they had nothing in common and were incompatible .

I can't see Diana's faults for seeing Camilla lack of respect/care/love of her and Charles children. Her sister said in the doc., "she never wanted to be queen" huh?? She didn't know all those years of adultery and hurt she caused that she wasn't going to be queen "hahaha 🤣, She chased that crown how many years? It's statements like that, I just can't get past.

@@NiniM8154 They speculate that she had BPD, that is really big emotions that can turn on a dime. It would also explain why she craved Charles' attention while at the same time turning him away if he tried. Black and white thinking and splitting can cause a lot of harm for the people around them while it is happening. If the person doesn't have insight then to them everything they are doing makes sense due to the signals that their body is giving them.

@honeym210 I think so, too. I read that he rehoused his oldest beloved dog shortly after he married to please his wife - she didn't like the animal. I always felt that said quite a bit about Diana.

@@UrbanArtCentralDiana wasn’t a saint. Just because she was pretty, charismatic and was smarter at manipulating the media, doesn’t mean she was innocent. It takes two to mess up a marriage. Several people confirm Charles really did TRY with Diana… only when it was hopeless and she cheated on him did he go back physically to Camilla… but yes, I think his heart was never fully in it. He felt pressured to marry someone the family and public would accept. How much autonomy did he have in selecting a wife. Diana looked good on paper but it was a terrible match. I think there’s plenty of blame to go around, including to the older royals who meddled in Charles’ relationships

​@@mbd6054 The drama included silently calling one married boyfriend's wife over a hundred times in one day terrorising the woman. She freely admitted it on the Panorama interview which William has asked to no longer be available for people to watch. I don't agree, it's an important documentary.

@@flowerjpotter1629 William's stance is understandable, from a son's perspective. He knows far more about his mother's affairs than any son needs to know, and doubtless doesn't want her memory further besmirched. She was tricked into giving that interview, and the fact that it was dishonestly obtained is a further valid argument for not showing it. Whatever the fate of the interview, it is important that the truth is told about Diana. Charles has been unfairly vilified and abused, for decades, because of Diana's manipulations. It's high time the record was set to rights. Charles and Camilla were Diana's victims, not the reverse.

It’s so gross that the dogs were allowed on the bed to piddle and eat. I love dogs, they sleep w me but they are also well trained. No piddling allowed !

Piddling on the bed would mean a change of bed top to bottom. That is absolutely not allowed. My cat did the upchuck (sorry but I can't think of another term) on my bed and the whole thing went into the trash. I clean the floor but my bed is sacred.

I enjoyed this episode but the first part stuck with me, being a huge dog lover all my life. I can't imagine having such an entitled, unruly dog! Perhaps the former prince also spoiled his children that way?? At the very least, it's incredibly rude to have the staff clean up after an untrained dog. And yes, even I draw the line at dogs eating in my bed, except their nightly before bed biscuits. Urine smells badly no matter how much you love your dog! Its a gross thought to just dab it with baking soda! That's fine for spot cleaning some things but not a pool of urine on bedding!!

Princess Margaret was also fearless about AIDS. Before this, she visited a friend’s son who had contracted AIDS when others were afraid to. But it was done in private, not to raise awareness.

I love your channel and I really enjoy your insights . I was born in the 70s and one of my first memories was everyone watching the royal wedding . I always loved seeing Princess Diana on the news or in the papers . Her Aids work was magnificent . She taught people to not be scared . This is in the 80’s . She had something about her that was transcendent . You were spot on about eating disorders . When she was rude to her dresser . Your body does get reactive to smells in recovery from eating disorders . It’s not easy . RIP Princess Diana .

I think trimming is a lot to blame. Just like when women shave their legs. Trimmed hair grows back thicker and stronger. I’m just glad I have never shaved my legs. Okay, I used to have some hair, but it was fine and fair, and now that I’m older has thinned out.

I totally get your point. Facial hair is a different matter. You will notice brow hairs grow because it grows until the follicle dies. The wild brush on Ferguson's face is unsightly. Just my professional opinion. @@ynys_mon6928

While it was Princess Diana who drew public attention to AIDS patients and should be credited for doing so, she wasn't the first royal to visit them - that was Princess Margaret. Perhaps Diana also visited Lady Glennconner's son - I don't know - but speaking to the Daily Express, Lady G only mentioned Princess Margaret, and when talking to the Telegraph after her son's death she said that Margaret was making her visits long before Diana. I don't want to detract from what Diana did because the public nature of her visits was very much needed, but she probably knew from Margaret's visits that there was nothing to fear. In the Daily Express article Lady G said: "When my second son had AIDS, which in the '80s was terrifying because we didn’t know how it was caught, quite a lot of our friends suddenly couldn’t come and stay-I don’t blame them because it was difficult. But [Margaret] always came to stay, she always saw David and Sarah, she always hugged Henry. She would come with me to the lighthouse, which is a place for young men who are dying of AIDS, quite often on their own, because their parents wouldn’t have anything to do with them or their partners have died." Lady Glenconner added that Margaret wasn't touchy-feely with the patients, but ""She was very very good with them. She used to make them laugh and talk to them. And all that people don’t really know about.”

So most times I would agree about the dogs eating in the bed… But I work for a hospital, and when I would work a third shift I would go down to the cafeteria by breakfast bring it home, my dog and I would eat it and then sleep the day away. I don’t know it was just a special little moment just for the two of us.

Your impression about the debauchery below stairs is supported. In the 90s there was another book called Disorder in the Court or Courtly Life (US, UK titles) by a butler or some such at Buckingham Palace. He said there was a lot of sex and drinking among staff. One time a housekeeper stopped him and said one of the maids and a footman were sneaking off and having sex in one of the back rooms below stairs. The narrator said something like, I wanted to tell her I had trouble enough keeping the gay men apart, and was not going to bother about a man and a woman which was just normal.

It was wonderful that her hug 'broke the barrier' for those suffering with AIDS. Others did similar work and dedicated years to it. But Diana had the spotlight and she loved the spotlight when she looked courageous, loving and gorgeous. As for the paparazzi - they got away with too much. They were thugs.

I find it disgusting that the medical community do not get the bulk of the credit for not ending the stigma over people with AIDS. It was doctors, nurses, and other frontline medical staff that started bringing awareness to the world that you could not contract AIDS by simply being around someone with it. Princess Diana was on the sidelines like everyone else when the disinformation about the disease was popular. But the myth of Diana has grown as if she alone ended the stigma.

I think you mean the Scilly Isles, Shauna? It’s pronounced “Silly” the c is silent. They are beautiful, part of the Duchy of Cornwall, which is why they went there. I am loving these readings! So much insight from the hindsight 😃 I’d forgotten that Ronald Ferguson was Charles’ polo manager and hadn’t realised how close they were. I’m wondering if this is why he still has a soft spot for Sarah, and has allowed her back into the fold (Sandringham at Christmas!) after the long wilderness years enforced by Prince Philip. Let’s face it, her infamous toe sucking incident is nothing compared to the shenanigans Charles and Camilla got up to when they were married to other people….and Andrew and Sarah were already separated when that happened. Charles and Camilla really don’t have the moral highground when it comes to some of their past behaviour!

The Scilly Isles are pronounced Silly (really!) . They're off the very western tip of Cornwall, and are part of the Duchy of Cornwall. They're quite small, and not easy to get to. There's a ferry during summer months, but otherwise its light plane or helicopter.

Shauna, I really do love the way you present these books. You have compassion and empathy as you expand on each story. That marriage was in no way a fairytale ever, right from the beginning. While I understand the reasoning behind the actions of HMTQ and the QM wanting a ‘pure’ wife for Prince Charles, neither older woman took into account the needs of the individuals involved. I feel that PC was crying out for unconditional love and acceptance. He received that from C. What he received from D was expectations of love and attention she never received from her father and mother. The fact they had to perform Royal Duties from the beginning of their married life and not allowing them the time to truly settle into the positives and negatives of married life. I feel that both C&D were a bit entitled and expected their marriage merger to succeed and thrive without much input or work from either of them. I can understand why D refused to be comforted by C when she was hurting and upset. They may have presented as overly emotional tantrums but she was feeling isolated, alone and abandoned in her marriage. C was also a damaged soul at this point in time. He has endured the horrors and bullying of Scottish boarding school, had succeeded in his educational endeavours at uni and then when he felt he had an opinion and point of view to offer he was mocked and ridiculed. His family were not a real safe harbour of love and acceptance as he was destroying hidebound royal protocols. C must have felt like the only safe person in his world. Sadly, he did not receive that safe live and acceptance from the very young woman he was forced to marry. And neither did D from the older man she chose to marry because she had loved him from afar for years but did not know the real man under the masks he presented to the world. I just feel so sad for both of them. But more so for W&H growing up in such an emotionally unstable home. I have no doubt that both boys were adored by their parents and they did their best individually. But discord in a marriage always leaks out and the children suffer often without really understanding what is going on. 💔💔🥲😭😢🤗🤗

I agree with everyone’s comments, I love your delivery when you read stories to us. I also could listen to you for hours. I am sad when your presentation is over and I have to listen to my own thoughts. I feel sorry for Diana, Charles and Camilla. It is too bad that Charles did not have the internal fortitude to stand up to his family, the Royal courtiers and marry Camilla before she got fed up waiting for him and married Anthony Parker Bowls. Charles still has not got the fortitude to deal with Harry and Meghan.

Emotional instability makes a person - unpredictable as opposed to how you have set certain behaviour or acts in stone. I think it unwise to weaken an argument by being judgemental to this extent. Real men didn't trim any excess hair from any part of their anatomy once upon a time. It was considered unmanly! I met Major Ron at a staff Christmas party. His mother was cared for by the nursing agency I was with. Saw my red hair and gave me a big smile. He supported various charities near where he lived.

I'm really not a fan of men grooming themselves beyond basics, but ear and nose hair I would include under that category. It's just about looking tidy, which is a gentlemanly trait in my book. The eyebrows I'm on the fence with... you could trim the unruly hairs for a cleaner look, but then they're such an expression of character and personality.

Men should be well groomed, as women should be. There is no excuse for bad grooming. Pets in the bed, my cat is tidy so he is okay, dogs are a no. I have had dogs and cats, goats and ponies but only a tidy cat may sleep in my bed.

I understand Diana's feelings toward the dog. My husband got a hunting dog, without discussing it, and they can be very hyper. My son has Asperger's and it was very distressing having the dog bark loudly and run around the house all the time. It peed all over the carpet, and my husband would throw a paper towel on top of the stain. I guess that was his idea of "blotting." It left a tick in my bed and I now have Lyme disease. We are divorced and he has the dog. 11 years later, the dog is very sweet but both my son and I are still on edge when it is around. Maybe Charles dog just added that extra layer of energy in the house that created more aggravation.

Another fabulously cheeky episode, I just love your delivery! As an FYI, in the UK we pronounce valet the French way with a silent T - all of us, it’s not just a regional difference. The only time someone might say val-et (not va-let) is in reference to having a car cleaned ie “I need my car valeting”, “my car was valeted yesterday”. Also the Isles of Scilly has a silent ‘c’, making the pronunciation “silly”. Don’t take this as nitpicking, I just know you love language and linguistics. Keep up the fantastic work! 🥰

I'm wondering if as this book was banned in Britain that possibly it was re-edited and submitted again sans details of Camilla visits to Highgrove to try and avoid the ban. Which could be the reason why there are a few disconnected mentions of her as if she had already been covered in an earlier chapter. I've heard about the soda and blotting paper trick being used by the Queen's staff too on those expensive carpets, so it must work. I can understand Charles loving his dogs so much that they go on his bed, some of mine slept on and in the bed. It must have hurt him so much when Diana wouldn't except his old dog and demanded he got rid of it. Charles gave the fog to friends. As for dog smells, having had several lovely dogs i found only my female Saluki didn't have any doggy odour, in lots of ways she was like a cat, but being a sight hound though ment dhe was a b•gger to get back if she decided to run off. Wonderful, beautiful dogs and very obedient accept for the You Can't Catch Me walks. Putting a chest harness on her with a grab handle was a huge relief as other dog walkers would grab the handle for me when she was playing hard to get. Instead of doggy treats i should have carried around a bag of Quality Street chocolates for all the helpful dog owners haha.
