Taking out the weaker player and taking their resources worked for me back when I played 3v1 in Supreme Commander. That would turn 3 players worth of resources against one player worth of res into 2 res vs 2 res. Never lost after that happened.

Why did they take 2 civs that focus on cav and cav achter? Seems like they don't complement each other well. There's no team bonus or unit synergy.

Unit comp matters more in 2v2. You need one melee player and one range, you see this if you watch a lot of 2v2 or 3v3 tournaments, to take the best fights you want one player to go heavy range units and one to go heavy into cav. Because of the way patrol mechanics work the cav work as a meat shield protecting the damage output of the archers. Common 2v2 teams are things like franks + britons, Spanish + chinese, vikings + persians, Mayans + Huns etc. Pairing tend towards one strong xbow civ and one strong knight civ.

It is not that bad, you get amazing scouts with Magyars that pressure early and then get the Mongol player to FC into Mangudai.

​@@matthewmcneany I added the question for unit comp later. So here the Mongels would do the archer side and Magyars the cavalry. It's just that they both have bonuses for both options. So if they both focus on one of them, they'll be wasting one of their civ bonuses.

​@@voswouter87 Yeah you're right that the bonus isn't used but it's a trade off against other factors like the fact that it's much harder to control both melee and ranged units at the same time, you also need to factor in the fact that paying for upgrades on more than one type of unit can be very expensive reducing the numbers of units you can field to the point where you can just die if you try it, so in a 2v2 you will generally see one unit type made quite exclusively by each player. It's not quite the same here because Viper isn't going to be playing like 2 players, which is probably why they picked the civs they did in the first game. Mongols are very strong especially on Yucutan with extra hunt, Magyars are super flexible but lacking an economy bonus so they could have provided either CA or knight line support depending on how Nili is playing if the game had gone on long enough. I think the plan for game one was for Nili basically to try to make it a mismatched 1v1 against viper and then HoB can provide whatever was needed to win the game in castle age. I think Viper made the point well that if that is the case Nili needs to be really aggressive which he wasn't.

i think the malian crossbows were good to control the map, but you had to kill one of them early. i think a siegepush against hand of blood would have helped; and champscarls against nilis plumes was tough. they need so many upgrades; maybe farimba wouldve been the better choice here
