Why? You have 5 to 10x more entertainment value for the same DLC. Like with skiing, the better you get the worse it is: As a beginner 10min in the cold on a lift after 5min queuing is rewarded by a good 45min "skiing"; later you bomb that in 5min tops, so every hour you have some 15min skiing for 45min of overhead where initially it was the other way around.

@mashek331

They're Sicilians. There's an option in the scenario editor to change the civilisation name to whatever you choose. In this case, the designer changed Sicillians to Normans, but the civilisation is still Sicilians in every respect. It's a very handy option when creating historic scenarios.

Ah, mate, it's OK. Some English names we just have to learn - their spelling almost doesn't matter. 😉 Weird? Yes. 😵 BTW, it IS a disgrace that the AoE2 voice actors DO NOT KNOW how to pronounce the names correctly. VERY bad. 😠 So you are 100% correct to be unsure..... 🤔
@IschmarVI
@IschmarVI 3 жыл бұрын
no, they knew EXACTLY how to pronounce these names. Here's the thing. The campaign takes place in the middle age and, to make it short, the language shift that eventually caused speakers to drop the "ces" in "cester" hadn't happened back then so it's is historically correct to pronounce it "glouCESter". That is the reasoning the devs gave and it makes perfect sense to me. Of course, one can argue about that, but claiming that the devs "do not know how to pronounce the names correctly" is strictly false.

@mashek331
@mashek331 4 жыл бұрын
@@InceyWincey You see, as a scenario designer myself, I would do exactly that! You cannot avoid modern English as it is the language of the day, so we're always looking for ways to bring a little more authenticity to the story. Pronouncing the place names as spoken during the day gives a sense of time and history. For example, if I wanted to do a 'Romans in Britain' scenario, I would be calling London the latinised 'Londinium'. It's also a nice simple way to acknowledge the words themselves, when we may never use them at any other time!
@InceyWincey
@InceyWincey 4 жыл бұрын
@@mashek331 personally I find it has the opposite effect, even worse the switch between Modern English and Latin is so jarring that it highlights the fact that you are listening to or reading written dialogue as opposed to genuine conversation.

“Worchester” and “Glowchester”, lol! Good effort on the part of the game devs, but British place names aren’t very intuitive to pronounce. I’m slightly surprised the voice actor didn’t give the correct pronunciation, though, since he sounds British (or at least is giving a pretty good imitation of the accent).
@zeroyuki92
@zeroyuki92 4 жыл бұрын
That was the correct historical pronounciation, basically brits got lazy to call the long name and shortened it and then later insist that the lazy pronounciation is the correct one
@KorKhan89
@KorKhan89 4 жыл бұрын
@@zeroyuki92 Shakespeare was already spelling Gloucester as “Gloster” (spelling wasn’t so standardised back then), so we can deduce that these pronunciations - even if not original - are pretty damn old. And since the narrator is speaking modern English and not Middle English, it doesn’t make much sense to selectively give a pseudo-authentic “medieval” pronunciation to the place names and not to everything else. I suspect it was a mistake on the dev’s part. This wouldn’t be the only one either. Elsewhere, they pronounce Scone the way it’s spelled, rather than “Scoon”, which would be the standard pronunciation.
@zeroyuki92
@zeroyuki92 4 жыл бұрын
1. Engish dictionary at 1709 (A Guide to English Tongue) still spell Gloucester as three syllable Glou - ce - ster. While it's true that in Shakespeare it was already two syllable, seems like the spelling at that time is simply not consistent, with the people in higher status tend to spell it with the original spelling. I'm not exactly historian and it was the only thing that some googling could show me, but since the campaign designer also mentioned that this is the more correct pronounciation for this time period I think it's better if we discuss this with him instead if we really wish to know. 2. The narrator is speaking in modern English, true. However, usually spelling for name of places and person is following the original language (clearly shown in every other campaign that was not about English) and thus there's an argument that the same could be said for Middle English as well. 3. While I agree that two syllables should be a good (or even better) approach for this case, I think there are enough argument to use the original three so that I won't protest about it.
