to be able to use the voice in this way is truly amazing and an ode to their dedication. leaves hope for humanity, let's keep traditional culture alive, as culture in the United States is not what it could be, we all can change that. Peace and Love.

I saw Kunqu Chinese Opera live in a Beijing theatre five years ago, I don’t speak Mandarin but the storyline was evident from the acting, together with English subtitles above the stage
@Jumpoable2 жыл бұрын
Kunqu isn't performed in Mandarin/ Putonghua (modern Standard Chinese based on the Beijing dialect). Kun opera is from Eastern China, where they speak Wu Chinese. Shanghainese is the most well known dialect of Wu, & Kun opera originated in Kunshan (Kun mountain) near Suzhou so the pronunciation is more like classical Suzhounese, which is also vastly different from contemporary spoken languages like Shanghainese/ Suzhounese/ Ningbonese. Some characters also approximate a Beijing accent, so you can say it's Suzhounese-accented Mandarin. LOL yeah it's confusing even for Chinese.

Estamos tão acostumados com a cultura europeia que chega a ser assustador. Nem parece que existe outro tipo de ópera além da Italiana. E eu adorei isso num nível absurdo! 😄🐲🌷

comparing turandot and madame butterfly (which btw is japanese not chinese) to cinese operas such as the peony pavillion is like comparing taco bell or chile's to authentic mexican cuisine. while both operas are excellent, both were written by non-asians with a marginal understanding of asian culture unlike peony pavillion. there's no comparison

Could someone possibly tell me the name of the actresses performing this scene? In particular, I'm curious who is playing lead. Thanks!
I was referring to madame butterfly being japanese, not turandot; i know turandot is set in china

Maybe it's cause I grew up forced listening to this (and as a result hated it with a passion) but I really don't like the screeching cat singing/talking which I don't understand how anyone can understand. The acting and movements are amazing though.
@surejuju939510 жыл бұрын
So sorry that you had such despotic parents who forced you to listen something that's so beautiful but totally foreign to you. I'm pretty sure most of the 1.4 billion Chinese people do understand and appreciate 崑曲.
@Feelkkari10 жыл бұрын
Sure JuJu It's part of my culture but it's not my favorite part. Something that my grandparents' and parents' generation would prefer and favor. I think most Chinese people in my generation would feel the same way. Sorry if it seemed like I was insulting it but I think after spending an entire childhood having it blasted in the car with my parents singing along off key, I lost my ability to appreciate it.
@surejuju939510 жыл бұрын
BTW, are you sure it was "崑曲" and not "京劇"?
@Feelkkari10 жыл бұрын
Sure JuJu So...I'm not Chinese in your eyes because I fail to appreciate every part of my culture? The I might as well mention that I also hate the poisoned baby formulas, the people ignoring a kid run over by cars, and the forced eviction of farmers. What about the one child policy that left thousands of deformed, female, and mentally handicapped babies abandoned? Mao's screwing over of EVERYONE in his "great" leap forward. The blatant attitudes racism towards non-Chinese. Tienanmen Square. Bad pollution and child beggars. Footbinding and not even letting unmarried girls be seen by visitors. I love being Chinese but if you think you have to blindly accept everything in your culture to be proud of who you are, I feel most sorry for you.
@Feelkkari10 жыл бұрын
Sure JuJu At the risk of offending you further, I also hate the 二胡 cause my father used to practice it every night for hours...which isn't bad in itself but he was a poor student and made a mistake every other note.
