This song choice was a last minute change and her guitarist friend flew in overnight from the Philippines. Very little time to prepare and I’m assuming lots of intuitive choices, turned into one of KZ’s iconic performances

Yes the problem with this is it followed upbeat performances and also the performances that followed it was upbeat. The emotions was delivered but the impact wasn't hitting as it is supposed to be.

Can you imagine competing in the Philippines, which has a crowd of great singers on every corner of every street? That she is so unique and such a great artist to be such a star in a place with that much competition is super human. She is so much more than just a singer. She a true artist in so many ways.

Why don’t you watch her rendition of “close to you“ where she imitates a trumpet halfway through and even at the end as well? You could also watch KZ doing “Royals“ by Lorde. Rendition of that is so creative and interesting. KZ Tandingan is so versatile, and can do anything Strange and interesting with her voice!

KZ is a force of nature. Everything she sings is an event. She is in a small group of singers that can make me cry from start to finish. I have a quirk in my brain I don't get chills, unless I'm cold. But where most of you 'normals' get 'goosebumps' or 'chicken skin', I cry! I've been that way since I was 5. Let me tell you when you're already the smallest kid in school (from Kindergarten on any class picture I was always on one end or the other of the first row. When I graduated from eighth grade the next smallest kid in school was in the first grade and he had skipped Kindergarten because he was capable. Anyway, in case you can't tell I have terminal ADHD. My original point was instead of like most people I don't get chills I cry. Which made me a target all through school. But as an adult it wasn't so bad. Again I was 2 seconds away from another ramble. So this artist can get me teared up in the blink of a tear-filled eye. I'm sorry I was all over the place today but some things don't get better with age.

I would encourage you (and anyone else new to KZ) to watch all of her Singer 2018 performances, they are not just good, but “special.” KZ is just one of those rare “once in a lifetime” artist who stylizes her performances in her own unique way. I was thrilled that you mentioned all of "the choices she's making." I love them too, and I think they are a large part of why this performance is so moving. KZ is a very raw singer; she wears her heart on her sleeve. Need to add that Makoy Portado's wonderful work on the guitar here added more to the song than we can say. Hua Chenyu told Jessie J that he thought this was the best performance. She asked if he meant "tonight?" He said, "No. In the whole season." The original of this song was lovely. This is 100x better. After countless hearings, it still makes me cry.

It's too bad you've already reacted to the Wish Bus "Rolling In The Deep". Her version in this competition was a show stopper, and won the episode (Ep.5). "Say Something" was a last minute thing. The show didn't want her to sing the song she had planned, so she had her guitarist flown in, and I think they had 1 rehearsal. Two other singers worth checking out from Singer 2018 are Hua Chenyu ("Nunchucks", among many good performances), and Tengri ("Heaven") from Inner Mongolia, who showed surprising dynamic control on that song. Also on Singer 2018 was Dimash's guest performance of Lionel Richie's "Hello", which had a surprise in it.

So, you mention loving seeing singers so emotionally invested in what they are singing. Maybe consider coming back to LiSA. Like KZ, I think that's LiSA's superpower. I suggest her First Take performance of Homura, and if you hit CC you'll get subtitles. Hang around for a minute after the song and she talks about it. Anything by Dolores O'Riordian and the Cranberries, too, although I may be bringing a little emotion in from myself, because it's still sad she is gone. I think you mean be more technically impressive. High notes and vocal gymnastic. She actually is more versatile than all of your faves in the Philippines. And I say this, as a huge fan of Regine Velasquez, Sarah, Geronimo, Kyla, Jaya, Lani Misalucha, and Katrina Velarde. They’re all amazing women, and they have some versatility to, but KZ has the most creativity and versatility. She is insane!
