In terms of his high note singing, I wouldn't say this is a great representation of it. He's really holding back on these notes and there's many videos where he's actually singing them and even more clearly. Great singer. Hope you keep reacting to their stuff.

I believe that on this tour, incluiding the fact of not beeing able to sing in a healthy way back in those days, Bruce forced his voice several times, so on this show, his voice was already tired and note able to sing in a high pitch

Saw this and had to watch immediately. Taking my 10 year old stepson to see them next week. Bruce can’t hit some of those notes anymore, but it doesn’t matter, he’s garnered so much goodwill through the years (he beat throat cancer about 6, 7 years ago), and still gives 100%. just saw them last Sunday, awesome show, with a ton of pyrotechnics. I'd recommend bringing some foam earplugs, and seat them just enough that it doesn't distort/muffle the sound, but lessens impact. People around me were complaining afterwards about how bad their ears were ringing, mine were fine. I was about 100 feet from the stage, on the floor.

I suggest just once you listen to the studio version of Hallowed to really feel the full impact of his voice. 2 Minutes to Midnight is a good one, too. I am LOVING watching you experience these bands that I grew up listening to and playing along with (I'm a guitarist of 45 years now...), and I played in many bands doing covers of Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Metallica, Helloween, etc. I realize this video is now a year old, but I just saw it today. If it hasn't been mentioned in the comments previously, Bruce Dickinson has HUGE energy and really expends himself 1000% in every show. I don't know if he is still active in it, but at one point in his life he was a world-class fencer, and he also flies the band around in their own 747. Yes, he's the pilot. It's so cool watching your facial expressions as you are experiencing these songs for the first time, and I know what's coming next - even if you don't. The joy is obvious! Love your channel... new subscriber, and I'm going to keep on watching!! ~Jason

I've been listening to Iron Maiden since 1982, at the age of 15. This song is probably Maiden's most popular on KZbin, from the Live After Death Tour. The beast one IMO is the Beast Over Hammersmith 1982 version Iron Maiden is: Bruce Dickinson - Vocals Born: August 7, 1958 (age 63 years) Started with Iron Maiden in 1981, left in 1993 and rejoined in 1999 and present singer Steve Harris - Bassist and Founder Born: March 12, 1956 (age 66 years), Started the band in 1975 and has never left Dave Murray - Guitarist Born: December 23, 1956 (age 65 years), 1976-1977, 1978- present Adrian Smith - Guitarist Born: February 27, 1957 (age 65 years), 1980-1990, 1999-present Janick Gers - Guiarist Born: January 27, 1957 (age 65 years), 1990 - present Nicko McBrain - Drums Born: June 5, 1952 (age 70 years), 1982 - present The next songs I'd recommend are Rime of the Ancient Mainer - LiveFlight666, Fear of the Dark Live Rock in Rio 2001, The Trooper (Live After Death 1985), Iron Maiden -- Phantom of the Opera (Live at the Rainbow 1980 - with first singer Paul DiAnno, The Clansman - Rock In Rio 2001 9/16, Iron Maiden - Dance Of Death (Live At Estadio Nacional, Santiago) also the ones listed below. Highlight of songs I'd recommend are: From Iron Maiden------ Phantom of the Opera - A must for live version Strange World (this one will be totally different Iron Maiden) From Killers ------ Murders in the Rue Morgue (Very loosely influenced by Edgar Allen Poe's short story, a story of a fugitive being sought for murder) ***You have done Genghis Khan (an instrumental - perfect for air drumming) Innocent Exile (continues the theme of Murders in the Rue Morgue of an unjustly accused fugitive) Killers (A journey into the twisted mind of a deranged killer) Prodigal Son(about a repentant man reminiscent of the prodigal son parable found in Luke 15 of the bible) Purgatory(lyrics of song read like a poem) Drifter (focuses on the possibility of new beginnings) From The Number of the Beast------ Invaders (It graphically depicts the violence and horror of a defense against a Viking invasion) The Prisoner (based on the UK television series that ran briefly in the late 1960’s) 22 Acacia Avenue (The continuation of Charlotte the Harlot) The Number of the Beast (Inspired by a dream Bassist Steve Harris had after watching the movie the Omen2) Run to the Hills (about the European arrival in America told from the perspective of both the oppressed Cree and the invading white soldiers) Hallowed be Thy Name (about a man who is about to be put to death and what he goes through) * Do this song live at Hammersmith 1982 From Piece of Mind------ Where Eagles Dare (based on an Alistair Maclean novel, (1967), and film (1968) about a WWII rescue of an American general from a Nazi stronghold in the Bavarian Alps Revelations (Starts with the Hymnal from Oh God of Earth and Alter, the next two verses on the Hindu philosophy, the third verse in Yoga a snake called Kundalini that lives at the base of your spinal cord, during meditation a spiritual entity is created symbolizing the transcendental union with God) Flight of Icarus (loosely based on the ancient Greek myth of Icarus) The Trooper (based on the Charge of the Light Brigade at the Battle of Balaclava 1854,which took place during the Crimean War) To Tame a Land (the song relays the story of Paul Atreides, Paul Muad'Dib, from the book Dune by Frank Herbert) From Powerslave------ Aces High (about aircraft dog fighting between the British and German fighter pilots of WWII) 2 Minutes to Midnight - About the Doomsday clock for the End of the World Back in The Village (The continuation of the song The Prisoner) Powerslave (about an arrogant pharaoh in his dying hours, he can't understand why he's about to die and fights it in vain) Rime of the Ancient Mariner - (From the poem of the same name by Samuel Taylor Coleridge (story about about an ocean voyage) From Somewhere in Time------- Wasted Years (A song about the admonition to appreciate the present and not to take things for granted) The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner (based on a short story of Alan Sillitoe which was made into a 1962 film Alexander the Great (About the story of Alexander the Great From 7th Son of a 7th Son (a concept album)------ Infinite Dreams (Detailing someone who is tormented by paranormal dreams and nightmares) The Evil That Men Do (Title taken from a quote in Shakespeare Julius Caesar but the song is unrelated) The Clairvoyant (relates the reflections of the 7th Son of the 7th Son on his life and his powers) From Fear of the Dark------ Wasting Love (About the emptiness of relationships without love. Another Maiden ballad) Fear of the Dark (About being afraid of the dark and the things in the dark that might be there - absolute a live performance for this one) From Brave New World------ The Wicker Man (about the apathy of our modern society and our egotistic disinterest of what is happening until something happens to us) Ghost of the Navigator (The lyrics are a metaphor of life, with the ship sailing west towards the setting sun representing death) Brave New World (Loosely based on the 1932 novel by Aldous Huxley) Dream of Mirrors (Yet another song about reoccurring and maybe premonitory dreams) Out of the Silent Planet (Supposedly inspired by the 1956 science -fiction film Forbidden Planet) From Dance of Death------ No More Lies (The lyrics deal with someone knows his time has come with the possibility of reincarnation) Dance of Death (Orinally inspired by Ingmar Bergman's 1957 film The Seventh Seal - Another one to do as a live performance) Paschendale (about the Battle of Passchendaele during WWI) From A Matter of Life and Death------ Brighter than a Thousand Suns (About the dawn of the nuclear bomb age) The Longest Day (about the WWII Normandy Invasion) Out of the Shadows (About being born)

This particular recording is all the more impressive if you watch the entire show, and see Bruce blowing his voice out completely trying to get the high notes in the first song they play... 4 consecutive nights at Long Beach Arena during a 192 date tour, a couple of those (I believe New York and one of other) were cancelled due to Bruce being ill, and his still pretty raw style of singing, it’s hardly a surprise his voice was on the edge. Compare his first run in the band (81-93) with his current run (99-present), and you can tell his style has matured over the years. His performances are just as big as they ever were, but that rawness is gone.

Aces High is not a vocal melody Bruce would have ever written to sing, the song sucks for them because it’s really un-singable live for Bruce with Maiden. It’s all Steve Harris to blame here. Almost the worst song to have to open a set with. Dickinson can simply not sing the A4-B4-C5-D5 part of the verse with any consistency… and compared to the beautiful album version the chorus simply does not translate live, it falls flat. I’d also like to point out that Bruce has no trouble hitting the D5 note on a song like The Talisman. He can swoop up to the note in that context. Aces High is simply an unsingable melody that Steve forced Bruce to sing. Well, OK it wasn’t terrible on the Flight 666 movie version… but it’s a ball buster vocally.

I was at that concert; what an incredible experience! I remember being absolutely gobsmacked by their performance. I was really into Twisted Sister before this concert, (TS opened for Maiden), but was a diehard Maiden fan immediately after the first song, (Aces High) Looking forward to hearing more vocal reactions from you!!! Thank you!!!

Bruce Dickinson really impresses people when they listen to him. He can be a story teller, sing higher, sing lower, belt like a beast and then lightly lull people with beautiful singing/vibrato - all while running around stage like a 5 year old! 4 decades later - yup - still doing it. Fear of the Dark live is a soul filling experience. The Trooper gets the blood pumping. You will find that Iron Maiden does a lot of songs about historical people/events. Try the song Paschendale live for a great story of a WWI battle. Iron Maiden always impresses with their composition, meter changes and (haunting) guitar work with a rock solid bass/drum foundation.

Great reaction to an awesome group. I have seen them live 4 times spanning from the mid 80's to the early 90's and there aren't very many singers that can energize the crowd like Bruce Dickenson.

if you're dwelling into rock and metal, rob halford from judas priest and Ronnie James Dio are great example of how metal and rock singers can develop so many different uses for their voices. Like bruce dickinson has a storytelling type voice in some songs, yet can hit really long, high notes. not to mention, he is VERY active during performances which i know makes it difficult on breath control

Their "The Talisman" performance in 2013 en vivo live album is Great and It would be a good way to see how his vocal performance evolved through the years. So Please do The Talisman en vivo Live in Chilie 2013 as the next maiden video. It's also one of the unpopular performance video among the vocal coach youtubers.

B, I totally agree. I think The Talisman may be Bruce's most demanding performance for, if nothing else, stamina due to the pace and duration of the song and abundance of lyrics. It may not be one of Maiden's best known tracks, but it's a hidden gem that I wish more vocal coaches/reactors would check out!

I really like this song and I think I like it more now after seeing your reaction. I'm not a singer nor do I pretend to be one, but with your reactions and analysis of what happens in these videos, I now know many things that I didn't know before, thanks for that. Now I appreciate more what singers really are and that it is not only having a good voice, but all the technique and learning that it requires. In conclusion, my most sincere congratulations for your channel and its content. And finally, I hope that one day you will react to the cover of Shallow by Floor Jansen, I am almost sure that as happened with the sounds of silence from Disturbed, you will like this version more than any other cover of this song.
