I lived in Aspen for a number of years in the 90s. One time, after the Snowmass Rodeo, friends were hanging out around a bonfire. Out of the parking area, a man walked up with a guitar in hand....John Denver! He joined us with songs around the fire and having a beer! So down to earth.

Yes, John Denver was popular on pop charts. Much of the" Rock" back in the 70's had a "folk" or "country" flare to it. For me, John Denver was one of the reason's this Oklahoma born wound up living in the Mountains. Moved to the mountains in 79' and never looked back....

I had the immense pleasure of listening to John Denver live at the Viña del Mar Song Festival in my youth, in 1990. Memories that I will cherish until the day I die. I was in the company of my late father, who loved his music and used to play the guitar. However, I don't remember if John performed this specific song. It doesn't matter... May they both rest in peace forever. Thank you... Thank you for bringing them back.

As an Australian John Denver is one of my favourite American country/folk singers… To me his singing was just effortless. He was a true natural talent, just like John Farnham… story tellers…. John was one of a kind. I lived in the Aspen area during the last years that he was with us and provided security for his home in Starwood. I spent some time around John and Annie, and my kids grew up with his. His voice was one of a kind and seemed to come out naturally. It didn't matter whether it was on a stage with a crowd of thousands or next to a campfire in the mountains with locals, it mesmerized everyone. I miss him and will always wonder what would have come from him as he got older.

As I've said in prior posts to you, I'm a former musical theater turned rock vocalist from a long time ago. Having musically grown up in the late 60s/early 70s, there are few bands and/or songs that I'm not familiar with in some form or fashion. Bethany, you did it today! I had never heard this song before and can't fathom how that is possible as I am a fan of Mr. Denver and his works. I saw him in concert many times. One of those concerts was a solo show with just John and his guitar(s). For 2 1/2 hours he completely held the audience. On some songs his voice and his guitar completely filled the arena, and on others you could hear a pin drop. And this was a big arena-probably 15,000 people. He was wonderful live. I started playing guitar because of him, and this song, This Old Guitar, was the one I most wanted to learn. Over 40 years later, I still play it. Thanks for this video.

JD is easy to do a voice analysis of ... his music speaks for itself. I once told him that each show he does, each song he sings, is slightly different, reflecting his mood of that day, and what was going on in his life, and I could determine how he was doing based on how he sang each song on that day. He rested his chin in his fingers for a moment and looked down, then his eyes raised to mine and he said .... Ya know, I never really thought of it like that ..." then another pause, followed by "faaar out" then a huge smile. He had an 8th sense and he had more missions to go conquer. 🙏

Since I first heard it in the mid-1970s, this has been my favorite song to play on guitar. It's a simple Travis-picked progression in the key of C, with lyrics that suit the accompaniment perfectly. JD was an amazing performer; during his concerts, he would send his backup band offstage for a break, and he would stay out there, alone with a guitar, and hold the audience spellbound. We lost him far too soon.

Yup. I went to one of his concerts. It was outdoors and it was raining. I wondered if they were going to cancel it. Luckily, it wasn't. He was very much like in this video. Just him and his guitar. He didn't just sing; he told some stories in between. He really kept everyone entertained. I think he attracts a different kind of audience too. Everyone was polite and quickly quieted down as he began each song, which was quite a few. It was a great experience even with the rain.

When I took guitar in school many years ago the two singers that our teacher picked most of our songs from was Jim Croce and John Denver. Straightforward songs, and music that could be taught simply at first and made more complex. Also great for us to sing along to. Which brings me to my point: John's songs are terrific for singing along to, and I think most people do well. But (ominous chord here) there are two of his songs that simply leave me gasping for air if I try to keep up with him: Calypso, a beautiful tribute to Jacques Cousteau and his ship. The other is called The Eagle And The Hawk. The man has some pipes.

You wondered how big John Denver was at the time, if he was just on the country charts or if he had broader appeal to a popular audience. He was hugely popular to a broad audience, starting really in the late 1960s when he wrote songs like "Leavin' on a Jet Plane" and continuing through most of the 1970s. He was just hugely popular, hence TV networks giving him his own television specials like this one.

Awesome reaction to an American folk icon! Not only was he the 38th best- selling music artist of all, he was a leading advocate for environmental causes in the 70s and also portrayed that love of the wilderness and country through his music. He was a huge fan of flying, too. Which caused him an early demise in 1997, as he crashed in his small experimental plane. He was admired all around the world. His song 'The Wings that Fly Us Home' is my favorite, as it's very soulful, prophetic, and in fact played at his funeral.

The Mamas and the Papas, who he sold a song to, Gordon Lightfoot, Joan Baez, Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Jim Croce, Steve Goodman, Arlo Guthrie, and many others. He was such a talented song writer, and he and Joni Mitchell both had incredibly clear and beautiful voices. It's an era I'm glad I got to live through.

You want to know about JD reputation when he was in his prime? Much more than a country/folk singer. The purity of his singing voice, music writing and personality where all genuine, touching and natural. He was so popular in his prime that he: had multiple TV specials, starred in muppets movies, and other movies. He occasionally guest hosted the tonight show. Everyone loved him, but teens who were trying to be cool - thought he was a bit nerdy, and he kind of was in an endearing way. But I think those that publicly thought he wasn’t “cool” secretly loved his music. JD was a rare gem of honest, genuine, natural singer/songwriter that has nearly disappeared from the over-marketed, computer corrected music of today. He could perform live as well if not better than his recordings. His voice got better with age. Sad that he’s gone, appreciative I was growing up during his prime!

Yes, he was mainly played on the pop/rock stations back in the day. I say this as someone who grew up in the 70s, graduating from high school in '76. He wasn't really considered a country artist at that time, given that country music was much different than it is today. If I remember right, I believe it took some time for him to really be considered a part of that genre. He was a part of the era that spoke of simplicity in our lives, along with other artists of the day such as Gordon Lightfoot, Jim Croce, The Carpenters, Cat Stevens, etc.

I saw JD about 10 times live in the 70's. Great performer and probably the only entertainer that truly loved his audience and you could feel it viscerally. He was huge star in both music and movies. If I may comment on the divisions of music and race/gender in the old days. I do not remember anyone feeling any kind of division in all things as we simply enjoyed good music. You will find what some people categorize as a crossover hit in all directions, country, R&B, Soul and rock crossed over simply because it was good music. People like John had a different look as did many others but again it never meant anything to most of us as we always judged the music alone. Simpler and better time to not allow any division and the only style/race/gender we ever saw was great music.

John was quite popular in the soft-pop sector - Barry Manilow, Helen Reddy, Carpenters, Olivia Newton-John, etc. in fact, there's a lovely duet he does with ONJ called Fly Away, from a Christmas TV special he did.

Loving the Tie-dyed bell bottom pants! Yaaa I need to put John in my Top 10 favorite male singers list! Never heard of this song either. Wasn't on my Greatest Hits album! YES!! John was huge across the Globe in his day and quickly drowned out by the BEATLES and screaming girls!! Great Reaction Bethany!! Curious! Have you heard his song CALYPSO?? Very Nice! Peace 🕊️☮️♾️😎🎸🤟🏼

John Denver was MASSive in the 70's, there was some crossover between country/folk into pop and soft rock (Eagles, Willie Nelson and more) That type of shirt you see him wearing in this video even became popular. He appeared on the Muppet Show, and was in a movie called Oh God with George Burns (comedy). Yeah , he was huge. This style of guitar along with Jim Croce, James Taylor i that sort of singer/songwriter fingerpicking style caused me to pick up a steel string... SO awesome.

Yes, John Denver was huge on the pop charts, as well. Virtually everything that he recorded could be considered "cross-over" music, as it was popular across genre`. Either country-pop, country-folk, folk-pop, adult contemporary, etc... His music appeared on all the charts except R&B in his time.

As far as John Denver's popularity: He was very big in the 1970s. Remember that the Top 40 charts were dominated by a kind of soft rock, easy listening sort of vibe. You'd have Elton John, Debbie Boone, Jim Croce, The Carpenters, and so forth. John Denver fit right into that, so it's not like he was relegated to some "country" or "folk" bin -- that's what hit songs sounded like in the mid 70s. He had a string of #1 hits and was everywhere on the radio in the early to mid 70s. He also showed up on television pretty frequently in the 70s and early 80s (including a series of collaborations with the muppets, as he and Jim Henson became good friends), as well as starring with George Burns in the movie "Oh, God" (which was a big hit). So, very mainstream and widely appreciated.

In the 70s, acoustic singer-songwriter was not exactly a genre, but dominated pop and country charts. He was country adjacent but was in same category with James Taylor, Carole King, Jim Croce, and even early Elton John
