Following my trip to Kenya and research on real estate and the stock market in Nairobi, I decided to interview Tim Staermose to understand his view on Kenya, its stock market, and opportunities in that market. Awareness is growing in Kenya among the youth especially on the benefits of Agriculture hence the clearing of farm land for real estate will gradually reduce. Currently Kenya is the largest producer of Avocados in Africa and top 10 in the world largely due well publicized info on its commercial benefits. Politics here might seem intense for an outsider but the tensions tend to fizzle-out quite fast.

Of more interest is the intellectual capital at sib capital's Mansa-x fund is generating 25% pa although its riskier , however the nse and kenya itself is and will be in dire straits a brazil like situation has developed too much non performing government debt and corruption has decimated most counters on the nse

In your other video, you alluded to the fact that most of the trading on the NSE is driven by foreign money. How come Kenyans are not investing their money in Kenyan companies and what do they invest in?

@@TheWanderingInvestor That's a red flag. In China the same situation exists because the stock market is largely a scam with completely fake balance sheets. Doesn't stop foreigners from investing interestingly enough, and you probably wouldn't know unless you have in depth knowledge. Not that China's economy is anything like Kenya's but cultural differences can only go so far explaining stock aversion in any country. In the end people chase money wherever they're from. If stocks were a good deal, locals would buy them.

@@ramdas363 Financial literacy is a thing. If you don’t understand complex financial derivatives generally you stay away from them. Same thing with with stocks, most people still don’t quite undertand them. But real estate, they do. Developing a country’s affinity with capital markets takes time.

@@TheWanderingInvestor Most people around the world do not understand finance, be it in the US or Kenya. That does not stop them from investing and neither does it stop them from making bad investments. If markets were rational and people only invested in things they understand, there would barely be any scams, but the opposite is true. Most Westerners who buy stocks (in the form of ETFs) for example have no idea about the details. Likewise real estate is very volatile in many places and far from the safe bet the average person thinks it is. The average Kenyan isn't an expert in macroeconomics and has no inside about the political deals that move the market. Real estate prices have recently declined in Kenya. If you put in money 3 years ago, you'd now be down. Bad investment, had better bought Bitcoins. Speaking off: Cryptocurrency and SACCOS are recent investing trends in Kenya. I guarantee you the vast majority of people who buy into these investments doesn't understand a thing about them. So what you're saying is obviously wrong. If you'd bought the NSE 20 in the year 2000 and held till now, you'd be down. That is a horrible performance in 22 years! These markets are highly volatile but they aren't actually good value, it's gambling. Locals know this because they got burned buying the top, as people always do. The difference is that people buying something like the S&P500 at the top only have to wait and they'll be fine. The same doesn't work in such markets like Kenya. And so they come to view stocks as a scam. The truth may be somewhere in the middle, since there is real growth beside the shady deals, but there's also real political and regulatory insecurity in these markets. Especially the latter I'm unsure if you understand because I see you recommend people do their research and check the fundamentals of the companies they want to buy. Fundamentals shmundamentals, this is Africa! Completely pointless reading their filings, you have to know insiders to know what actually goes on. The often high yields reflect the risk, when you factor that in the stocks often aren't that attractive.
