I know this tutorial and all the others of Silver Tower are roughly 2 years old, but I recently just got the game and these have been a tremendous help AND teaching me more about painting- because I’m fairly new there too! I’ve been a sub for a while now too! I can’t thank you enough for these tutorials!!

Great tutorial, just beginning to try out colour transitions with washes and this was really helpful, can't believe you paint in the tattoos by hand, I was hoping to find some cunning painting magic for them as my hands are not as steady as they used to be but I love the effect and am keen to replicate it somehow.
@PeteTheWargamer8 жыл бұрын
I was scratching my head for a while over how best to tackle those tattoos actually and the white paint with a wash to colour it was the best I could come up with using the citadel paints. There may be some other methods similar to how weathering is applied to tanks by military modellers, possibly applying a pigment 'wash' over the entire area before removing the excess with some sort of solvent.

Firstly, great tutorials, just bought silver tower and looking forward to painting the models using your guides. I have watched most of the tutorials and ordered a job lot of the colours you recommend. For some reason I missed blue horror, can you suggest a similar colour I could use instead as I don't want to order 1 paint as postage and packaging would cost me more than the paint itself.

Nice done! I've played Warhammer Fantasy 10 years ago and am currently thinking about picking up the Silver Tower and start painting again. Your tutorials are really great for this because I wouldn't be able to do such a good job without it! Few questions: 1) You use citadel paintings, did you ever try Vajello paint because it seems much cheaper? 2) What brushes do you use, I hear alot about Winsor & Newton 7. Thanks again and I hope you continue with all the models of the set!
@PeteTheWargamer8 жыл бұрын
To answer your questions 1) I haven't had much experience with Vallejo but tend to use Army Painter when tackling large forces. I mainly use GW on showcase miniatures and for these tutorials. 2) I use some Army Painter brushes and also some Kolinsky Sable brushes from Element Games (elementgames.co.uk/paints-hobby-and-scenery/brushes/masterclass-kolinsky-brush-character)

Heya dope tutorial series, i have one burning question tho. How did you attach the arm? There's no gap at all it seems. I've been thinking about sub assembly + magnetizing and how to fix the gap problem post painting but i have no solution.
@merzbeaux7 жыл бұрын
Really basic question- on a model like this, how do you handle gluing the painted components? Do you scrape glue away from contact points before attaching the arm, or gluing the feet to the base?
@patinho55898 жыл бұрын
Hi your guides are great (as everyone says) One question: what brushes do you use?
@xgdhx8 жыл бұрын
Great tutorial. How did you do the base? It looks great with the Silver Tower theme.
@PeteTheWargamer8 жыл бұрын
It's just a crescent piece of plasticard I created by drawing around the bases. Glued to the base with super glue with some sand added as well. I am hoping to squeeze a tutorial on how I did it into my schedule soon.

I soo regret I didn't see this tutorial before I assembled this miniature . Now I cannot un-glue/detach the arm with staff, which makes it really hard to paint :(
@bneffer5 жыл бұрын
I hear your pain. Live and learn - I made the same mistake. His chest on that side and the staff itself suffered some in detail as a result, but from the table point of view no harm. Next time though I'll think through the painting before I start gluing!

Can you please tell me a bit about your camera setup? Which camera do you use, how do you mount it on your painting table? Thanks :)
@PeteTheWargamer8 жыл бұрын
Sure, I use a Canon XA10 on a tripod that is in front of me and slightly to the right. It is on the floor and not the desk itself. I have a daylight strip lamp which I use for lighting my videos and also painting in general. If you have any more questions feel free to ask :)
@CorvusMiniatures8 жыл бұрын
I also tried putting a tripod in front of me but I did not manage to find a comfortable position to paint with such a setup. The legs are in the way and I cannot put my chair under the table like I used to. How do you solve this problem?
@PeteTheWargamer8 жыл бұрын
Yeh it's not the most comfortable set up in the world. It can be helped by getting a tripod that you can crank up the central pole quite high and just leave the legs quite short.
@CorvusMiniatures8 жыл бұрын
I will have to give it another try some day. Thank you for the information :)

Mix in some Lahmian medium or other similar acrylic mediums. It'll thin the blue down whilst keeping the same consistency. Apply a couple of thin layers, allowing to dry in between, for the best results.
@mrbushi10627 жыл бұрын
hey Wargaming I've been thinking about doing painting tutorials myself what is your camera set up? I don't understand how people have a camera that close to the mini while they paint.
@PeteTheWargamer7 жыл бұрын
I have a camera set up in front of me facing down. and I reach around the camera to paint. It's a bit awkward but you get used to it.
@mrbushi10627 жыл бұрын
cool didn't think it would be that simple. may I inquire as to what kind of camera you use? would something like a webcam work?
@mrbushi10627 жыл бұрын
also thanks for taking the time to reply!
@PeteTheWargamer7 жыл бұрын
I use a cannon XA10 along with a Blue Yeti microphone for the audio work. I edit using Premiere Pro and Photoshop. A webcam would be a good starting off point, I'm not sure if it would have the same depth of colour or focus though.
@mrbushi10627 жыл бұрын

what is the benefit of using medium rather than water to dilute paints?
@PeteTheWargamer6 жыл бұрын
Medium is basically pigmentless paint. When you mix it with paint you keep a thicker consistency but reduce the pigment levels giving you a translucent appearance when you apply it. Water reduces both the thickness and the pigmentation. So thinning with water is a way to make the paint easier to work with, thinning with medium allows smooth transitions and glazes.
@harrymanback34756 жыл бұрын
+The War Gamer ty very much for your response love your videos they gave been invaluable to me in tackling painting through my silver tower figures, some are so detailed I hardly knew where to start (gaunt summoner ect). Have you done any vids on figure assembly? Last figures I painted were LotR I was shocked how much assembly was required on the silver tower figures and some of the finer detail ones are quite a challenge to put together for me. Also just wondered if you've done a tutorial on the familiars yet they are some of my fav miniatures in the game. :-)

What brushes do you use?
@PeteTheWargamer7 жыл бұрын

@ronraducanu96338 жыл бұрын
Why do you use so much Lahmian Medium? I much prefer either using just plain water or a Fluid Retarder. Much cheaper and just as effective. What are your thoughts on this?
@PeteTheWargamer8 жыл бұрын
The reason I use Lahmian Medium in the tutorials is because I prefer to stick to one brand of paint that's easily purchasable by any one who has access to GW minis. But that's not to say it's the only option out there. I also use Vallejos Glaze Medium and Fluid Retarders are much the same thing. I do find them superior to water however as the pigment seems to be more easily distributed in the mediums which prevents streaking.
@ronraducanu96338 жыл бұрын
I guess my difficulty with Lahmian Medium (LM) is that it's not really thinning the paint so much as reducing the amount of pigment within the paint itself. So yes it will make the paint less pigmented, but won't really "thin" the paint to make it flow much, much better as adding water or Fluid Retarder would. LM is basically a clear paint, and some even describe it as a non gloss varnish. I would also be interested to know why in some spots on the vid you mention using water and in others you use LM. So far, one of the only things I've used LM for is as a base coat to apply decals on to avoid silvering. The other time I've used LM is to "thin" the GW washes as if you thin them with water, they dry very glossy, which I hate.
