I first started painting minis 24 years ago. Went through the blotch-painting phase and got somewhat better... slowly. Then... life happened. Studying, career, house, kids. Along the way the hobby faded. But about 6 months ago I started watching these painting tutorials and was awestruck by the skill guys like Duncan have. By now I must've watched hundreds of videos from DRPA, Table Top Ready and Squidmar. So, finally, just a minute ago, I clicked "purchase" on a sizable order of paints, brushes and a box of Space Marines (tactical squad). Thanks for reigniting my interest in this hobby. Cheers!

Funny thing: while Nids are an army where you wanna be able to paint things fast due to how many models you'll be painting, I won my first painting competition by going completely ham on one. Was a Hormagaunt that I painted in the style of Behemoth, going a little old fashioned with a very vibrant version of the model. Now, the dip wash model is awesome for how fast it is. You can easily set up a kind of assembly line and bang out 10, 20, maybe even 30 dudes at a time like this.

And i hope you get more of your brand out there. I had a devil of a time finding your band thru online stores. I found them at Warpfire. And man i was elated. And satisfied. Its an amazing formula. It flows very well and coats like a dream. It takes very little paint to paint a mini with it. Love it.

If you are painting and army get an airbrush and then spray the varnish through it. Use AK or AMMO Mig ultra matte varnish, it will look amazing and not take long. An air brush will save you so much money on primer spray cans too.

I’m a long time Tyranids player. Contrast was a massive win for mass painting hordes, and it’s what I would recommend. It’s worth using the GW sprays as your base over a cheaper product. They hold detail well and something about the surface they give works better with something like contrast that needs to be able to flow.
@AsperTheGhostАй бұрын
@@Queldonus Thanks for the advice. Do you add anything to the basecoat spray like a drybrush before adding contrast (something like slapchop) or just allow the contrast to do their job? I've rarely used contrast myself so I'm wondering about what works best. I don't mind spending a little longer on models so long as it's not hours of edge highlighting :)

This was perfect timing, I have to paint 10,000 points of Hive Leviathan for the Battle Barge Cruise crew. They are basically using the Tyranid force as an NPC faction attacking all other guest armies during a narrative campaign...but I digress...my main issue is painting 10k in a year when I barely could get through my own 2k point orks lol. I am not sure which method I will go with here, probably contrast/speedpaint and accents and washes with these recommended Two Thin Coats since they look so good.

@@DuncanRhodesDRPA Technical question for you, do you dilute your AP Dips with mineral spirits before use. I had read you should thin it with a 50/50 mixture, but i had semi good results with that. I also went with what I thought would be a more controlled method and brushed it on, but all that did was give it a very dirty appearance. What are your suggestions for proper application of the Dips?

Dip looks great but im curious. Other than the action, whats the difference between dipping and just shading, i.e. why not just broadly paint a shade like Agrax Earthshade over the whole model instead of dipping it? Itll be done faster than 24 hours. Im having trouble understanding the perks of dipping vs just shading.
@DuncanRhodesDRPAАй бұрын
Good question, but it's the finish it gives. It's an old technique, in fact, some folk back in the old, old days would dip their minis in a wood varnish! Which is something this Dip is similar too (We think lol)
@MykanderaАй бұрын
Aside from the finish as mentioned the dip does two other things. First it's a really strong protective layer, they'll take a lot more handling and beating before showing wear and tear. The second benefit it combines the benefits of an oil and acrylic wash. It's sits into the creases and depressions better than a normal wash and has the density to retain a smooth finish when a acrylic wash can be a bit spotty, while also being thick enough to stain everything more evenly than a oil wash would get you without having to put it on thick and wipe off the excess.
