Nice work, amazing how metal shrinks and distortion is always fighting you. Prevention is best as I was a lazy welder ( retired a few years back ) and happy to find heat distortion addressed. With thin stainless ( 308 ) food process piping any excess heat or travel speed can cause rework. Thanks for sharing you adventures.

To keep the pipe straight without a big hassle get you two sections of heavy heavy duty angle iron, make sure they are thick enough and heavy duty enough to wear the heat won't bend them that easy then c-clamp them around your joint that you're welding and once you get your first root pass and hot pass in you can take them off you will have to move it back and forth while doing it but those two heavy angle irons that are sea clamped on both sides around what you getting ready to weld, will hold it absolutely straight you can make it in a quick jig to where you can go ahead and just slide The jig of the two angle irons around the pipe I wish I could draw it out for you but I can't in this text message.
@Justin-BrianBurdick7 күн бұрын
I can see that working, but I'm sure other welders or QC giving u hell cuz ur using angle irons , prolly call u a shitty welder by using them, but really eeeeeeeverybody gives the welders hell, always talking shit

I am new at tig welding, when I am backfeeding I always move the rod too much when feeding and I stick it because sometimes I can not keep it in the gap. I am practicing on a 10 inch pipe (about 5mm= 3/16 thick). I freehand the root, because I can only walk the cup at capping yet. Do you have any advice how not to move the rod too much?
