Dude is amazing. Not sure how long I can repeatedly listen to Oboe Concertos. That said I'm exploring other works by him and they are quite satisfying too. Eighteen months and more listening to Maderna repeatedly; enjoying it immensely and no closer to having a clue what is going on on a global scale. I usually start my day of listening with Babbit or Webern followed by Maderna and Carter.

If I am not mistaken, Maderna wrote three concertos for oboe. I suppose that he was charmed by the play of Holliger. Of course, Maderna is a pionneer and we cannot expect to have a classical concerto. The principle of the dialog, or contrast, between the soloist and the orchestra is nevrtheless kept, although drasticly revisited.

Remarkable! I'm finding the not so dialectically engaged work a wonder apart from Nono and Berio who are so mch better known while each work of Maderna comes as a revelation from this era!

Still not a Carter fan? Carter's Concerto for Orchestra, Variations and the Piano Concerto are stunning.

@@stueystuey1962 Ive always been a Carter fan . I use quintuplets just like him often with rests cuz I get that ruch in a beat . Carter amazes me everytime I look.I just got the flute concerto and amm ordering more as expensive as his orchestral scores are .Its not enough to see the m on youtube -I must study and learn.Have 5 or 6 papers downloaded about him and Wuorinen.Dont know if I can understand but will try . Check out my compositions if you can,.

Borderline interchangeable with many of the late EC concertos. For atmospherics Maderna may actually be the more subtle of the two. Apart from some of Babbitts chamber works i don't think anyone can compete with Maderna and EC as the greatest of the radical modernists. Though it is always possible there are works yet to be presented.
