Like most composers of the XXth Century, Wellesz created a style of his own ( close both to neoclassiciism -including late Beethoven- and expressionism- in his case, a very interesting and intriguing language) and used it to write masterworks. This 6th quartet is undoubtedly one of them. The construction is as singular as the language. We can find clearly polyphonic sections which are transformed all of a sudden into something else. All in all, a strange masterwork, but for sure a masterwork.

At first I thought that I was hearing a reduction of Beethoven's "Coriolan" Overture. Not so, but this is dramatic too, in its' own way, and more likeable than Wellesz' 4th Quartet, to which I'd recently listened. This 6th is quite good-humored, and in fact seems quite Beethovianian - that is, if he had been a 20th-century composer.
