My son Matt shows up the Diamond Dons one year but just to watch, wants really bad to ride the race after seeing all the neat people there. I tell him maybe someone will loan you a vintage bike to race (thinking no way), comes back real excited with a margarita in his hand saying some guy just loaned me a 400CZ to race! Who? A really cool older dude with a full bar set up at his motorhome? What was his name? Brad Lackey. I shake my head and say: You just had Americas only 500cc world champion loan you a CZ. One of the most down to earth guys you'll ever meet.

I was a young man stationed at Rhein- Main Air Force Base outside of Frankfort Germany and me and a buddy drove to Luxembourg,camped out and watched the races. Brad signed my USA hat. Good times 😎

I was born in 1979, so I missed most of the Brad Lackey era. The older I get, the more I realize Brad is one of the best American motocross heroes we have. Thanks Brad and thanks Ping. Great interview.

My friend was the spectator who Brad ran over when he went through the fence at Sears Point after tangling with Hannah, and I was standing right next to him. After the race Yamaha tried to protest saying Brad had outside assistance to get back on the track, my friend testified to the refs and the protest was thrown out...!

Great job Ping and staff! Brad is my childhood moto hero and I remember him coming to Indian Dunes to race in the early 70’s a couple of times. I had the pleasure of meeting him a at Bakersfield Speedway in Cali. If I remember right he had Danny Chandler with him and Brad and the Fox Bros. were putting money together for Magoo’s custom van. Let me say that Brad is such a gentleman and I’m so happy that he finally was able to find his championship Suzuki from the 82 season.

My ultimate childhood hero. He trumped them all; because he went to Europe and never gave up. I’ll never forget when he won that world championship…. I was living and racing Mx in Japan and I have never been more proud of an athlete…. He never disappointed👍

My friends and I rode our bicycles down to the Carlsbad shopping mall back in 1972. Roger DeCoster was there with his works bikes. There were quite a few people around him asking questions. This was for the Carlsbad Trans AM I think November 7. when the crowd thinned out I got to ask him a question. It was one week after Halloween and I asked him if they had Halloween in Belgium. (lol) He was very courteous and explained to me that they had something similar to it. My friends and I were very good at sneaking into the pits at Carlsbad raceway. I have some good pictures of Brad Lackey and other European riders. Back then they were like from a different planet we were in absolute awe of them.

Great Interview! and Wow great stories!!! - I watched Brad Lackey Race at Carnegie at Local MX races back in 1970 (I was 10 years old) - Of course he kicked @$$ in both classes - Lee Sutton has a Photo with Brad Lackey and me and my brother in it watching Brad back then - I also used to ride at the Richmond Ramblers MC track and Met Brad Lackey there when I was 11 years old. Ping: great interview as always! So much I didn't know or forgot about BL racing career. Growing up in SoCal, racing Saddleback, Carlsbad, and Escape Country in the early 70s was a blast. Brad reminded me of all the Trans-AMAs I attended, the Euros came to kick the our asses, but we always hoped and cheered our American heroes. I'm 66 yrs old, still watch MX/SX, but stopped riding bikes for a Can-Am X3. What an amazing life BL lived, great show!

Brad left out some things. In 1973 Kawasaki started their lime green look. Brad, Wienert, and DeSoto were the factory racers. Their first series was the winter series in Florida, which was won by Karsmakers. After that series Brad went to Europe. He did come back for the final rounds of the Nationals and finished 2nd. Brad could be found racing Saddleback park on Some Saturdays. The Expert class were 40 minute motos, and on one Saturday the line up was, Brad Lackey, Bob Hannah, Gaylon Mosier, Gary Semics, Broc Glover, Warren Reid, Roger DeCoster, Garrit Wolsink, Rich Eirstedt, Gary Jones, Scott Goodwin, Mike Bell, Rex Staten.. Plus all the locals. If was like a Nation. real cool. Hannah won.

1:44:00 Brad, c'mon, Namur is literally THE MOTOCROSS TRACK, it's above all - IDK how many times I've watched the 2001 MXdN event there (all 3 races are here on KZbin), it's the best course in the World, still is and it has been dead for over 15 years now

The USGP 500cc Carlsbad track was the best in my opinion anyhow because Roger De Coster never put two motos together there for an over all win nether did Bad Brad Lackey there either. The Carlsbad track was Adobe Blue groove rough as hell with steep up hills and down hills all which wore the bike and rider down till if not careful would destroy both. Gerrit Wolsink won the Carlsbad 500cc USGP 4 times straight and another win there a few years later. His approach to Carlsbad was not to go all out but to ride within the reach of the front when a charge was needed to pull off the win. In 1980 when Marty Moates won Carlsbad Gerrit Wolsink was with Maico and showed up weeks earlier to get things going his way before race day. He went to American Maico to get his Maico built up like he wanted thinking with his history of winning Carlsbad they'd let him have his way. Guess not, cause come race day when Gerrit showed up his Maico was a stocker which completely pissed Gerrit plumb off. Gerrit wasn't a threat all day against the factory's works bikes he was up against. I do realize the world tracks you're talking about but most were high-speed if you get off chances are things get broke including rider body parts Brad talks about. Brad also talks about some tracks in Europe the fans would swing a ball bat at you're handlebars hoping to knock you out of contention for the win. My story or my two cents worth

The United States won the motocross of nations 13 years in a row! And we lost the 14th year by one point because Mike Kedrowski‘s hand got broken from roost thrown off of Mike LaRocco‘s bike just a couple days or weeks before the race

Always good to hear Brad talk bout what every American that races moto-cross 🏁 ought to be sought after because of the great experience it is to participate at the world class events regardless the outcome instead of just staying in America hiding out like your the shit or something. Sure your weaknesses might infact surface or they might not but in my opinion your not the fastest till proven against the world participating in the Grand-Prix open class events. I've read or seen some videos that the guys putting on these Grand-Prix events has changed the way riders are paid and one of the things that needs changed is all riders pay an entry fee, where as before riders were given show up fee's, just to show up so the fans could see their hero's so the track would benefit from ticket sales from race fans. Somebody needs to grab the reins of our sport and head it off in the way it was back in the early 70's & 80's which was the grand time for the sport in its establishing world finally recognizing moto-cross as a world motosports organization. Moto-cross is good for the raising of kids as a family sport. The rules needs changed about this two-stroke four-stroke deal not getting to complete against each other PERIOD. Somebody needs to take on the AMA to get moto-cross back on track SERIOUSLY
