This film is an example why most African countries rich in natural minerals are poor. It is an eye opener. African states are being manipulated with massive corporations making huge profits. It is the reason why these kind of trade exchanges need to be discussed and debated before any documents are signed. How do all these trade agreements come into existence between these corporations and African states. These companies would not do this in their own countiries. Is it that they have no value for the lives of these black people. I would like to apologise for my rant comment 2 months ago. I left it there because it was how I felt at the time. I think this all boils down to standards. Africans need to set higher standards for themselves across the board. I have lived in the USA and in Zimbabwe and the major difference is that standards are set high in America. Nobody here gets handouts at all, they really do work for everything they have. I work way harder in the US as I did in Zimbabwe. What I realised is that the average standard set here is different at home. I went to the best school in Africa in Zimbabwe and we had extremely high standard. The environment we lived in did not allow us to slack off so when we had competitions with other schools we had fewer election pool but we always kicked ass to the point where when other schools saw us on the schedule fear just crept over them. So I urge you young business people in Africa to set your standards higher and that way you can compete on the world playing field.

African continent natural reserves combined worth at least tens or even hundreds of trillions of dollars! The blame for African poverty cannot only be blame on foreign companies alone; but African leaders are playing a big role in creating poverty in Africa as well. Most African leaders in the poorest African countries keep their money overseas and not in their respective countries for development. How can Africa eradicate poverty when our leaders only think of enriching themselves and care less of the people they represent? African leaders need to invest the money from resources to African banks and let the bank lend that money to Africans to establish small businesses and that’s how prosperity begins.

+ Ellotus Perhaps you missed the bit at the beginning where we learned Zambia didn't even have time to get its resources valued. It had foreign "aid" loan repayments due it couldn't pay and the IMF and World Bank pressured it to accept this deal with Glencore or never receive loans again. I'm confident Zambians are well aware of what's needed to extract their resources at profit without needing white saviour experts to come in and tell them how it's done. Zambians know the first thing you need is investment, for instance. Unfortunately, they don't get investors turning up, they get thieving multinational corporations instead right at the time they are being squeezed by those wonderful humanitarian organisations, the IMF and the World Bank. Perhaps we could crowdfund copper mining in Zambia? We'd need to raise several billion, but hey! we'd be teaching those Africans how it's done wouldn't we? You may not be blaming the victims, but you certainly are patronising them.

That Swiss community in the beginning really makes me sad and lose faith in humanity. They’re already so privileged and so rich yet they refuse to even consider giving away some of that wealth to people in need and not just any people, but the people who’s work and suffering they directly benefit from. These type of deals made by those governing African nations like Zambia, only created a vicious circle of dependency on outsiders (foreign investors) and thus puts these Africans at the mercy of another country. Instead wouldn't it have been more ideal if the people in leadership would have thought about their country's future, the value of these assets and have found an ecologically feasible way to mine these copper mines by using African people and Africa's own financial resources. As a people, Africa should have been able to be the one's who sponsor, govern and oversee their own county's assets, thus benefitting the people of Africa in the long haul. These leaders, it seems are were only worried about immediate gratification and their own bank accounts, instead of their nation's well being. Reminds me of the Biblical account of Jacob and Esau, Jacob like the European nations and the USA. knew the long term value of these natural resources and was welling to invest and do whatever it takes to get control of these assets and thus reap long term benefits, like Jacob, who knew the long term value of a birthright, which Esau possessed. On the other hand, the African leaders who sell their people future, and well being for their own gain are like Esau, who sold his birthright for a plate of beans. These leaders only want a quick payoff at the expense of their people. How sad, this type of behavior on the part of leadership is why many African nations don't get the respect they would have otherwise. It's not what African Nations have in their mines it's the ability to know the value of these mines and knowing how to make these assets work for their people that make for rich nations. Because like all things valuable, if the one possessing it does not make good use of it, someone else who knows it's value will. If one wants to be rich, one has to be shrewd as well. This type of shrewd doesn't mean dishonest, by this I mean having the skills and wisdom to know a good opportunity and find a win-win way to make it work for the rightful owners. All this problem is the product of greed and the inability to truly value one's country and people. It's also greed that is drowning Europe and America, because it is creating great disparity in the Western World as well. Greed is like sweet poison, then again wealth in natural resources without good management skills is worthless. So stop chanting to foreigners we need you to give us jobs extending the cycle of dependency and find ways to say to yourselves, we will unite as people and find a solution that will get us ahead, regardless of how hard it will be, or the price that has to be paid, nothing is free. I had to shut this video off at 36:00. This isn't complicated at all. The Zambian Government should shut this mine down immediately and charge Glencore $750-Million to restart it. The $750M will go to medical treatment for affected citizens. Afterwards, that mine should be charged $5-Billion a month to operate and will pay it's own electricity and other utility bills as well as a $10-Billion dollar yearly tax to operate in Zambia. The problem is if these mines are nationalized, the government employees make a mess of it and soon the mines run gigantic losses. Then they start needing funds from the public and taxes rather than contributing to it. While Glencore may not be paying taxes as we want, we should be ok that they are paying taxes based on LME prices. Making it into govt run company is a decision that would decimate both the company and the Zambian tax revenue. It is sad but that is the way economics and human behavior is. Govt workers just want salary and no work and most businesses collapse. I am talking from Indian experience.

This happens in most poor countries with resources. Some locals with power want to stay in power, help write laws to make deals legal where only they benefit from it. If the population is poor and starving, any deal is better than their current state. Getting real people into a position to represent their people is the only way to make a new deal. If most of the people understood, or had the willingness to learn, the inner workings of their government; they may have more motivation to take action. This can easily happen anywhere around the world, the richest of the rich have more money than the rest of the world combined. How they got in such wealth and continue to keep it, this is where the interest of the people should lie. Considering the conditions of anyone being taken advantage of everywhere in the world, this is the perspective a society needs to make effective changes.

Why is everyone here so discriminatory? Do people really believe that reverse racism is going to make a difference? The real reason it's important to acknowledge the abuses a person is capable of doing in a capitalist society is to figure out a way to make them end. No one here has solutions. Which means poverty continues, BUT this is an over simplification of the fact that people deserve to live in better economic climates simply because we have the knowledge and resources to help.
