The Etihad was purpose built to end up the way it did. The structure of the lower seating bowl was already in place before the Commonwealth Games, but a temporary surface for the track and field was installed. After the games the lower bowl was ‘excavated’ before the second tier and roof canopy were completed (plus the later extension at one end).

I’ve been to the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum twice. Once in 1984, and then again in 1991. In 1984, we went there to watch an AMA Supercross event. Before the Olympics, they had put a very sophisticated watering system, so the race track had to be built on the running track, with a section of the track going up into the stands, and down the Peristyle. My visit in 1991 was for a preseason game between the Raiders and 49ers. Is still has the track. I’ve been to Turner Field a few times to watch the Braves play. It was a nice stadium for baseball.

The old Wembley had a running track which was also used for greyhound racing. Famously the owner of Wembley wouldn't cancel the dog racing during the 1966 World Cup so the planned game was played at the White City Stadium in West London. QPR also played there for a while The other notible one is the Red Bull Arena in Leipzig, where they just plonked the new stadium inside the old bowl.

They tied Auburn in the Sugar Bowl and finished the year ranked 4th in the AP polls. Don McPherson was the QB and finished 2nd in Heisman voting that year.

Looking at this title makes me think of a local one, Exhibition Stadium, which went from: - A 1/3-mile paved oval (used for car racing at one point) with an infield that could be used for soccer and Canadian football (1948-1958) - A 1/4-mile track and Canadian football stadium (1959-1974) - A Canadian football and baseball stadium, with no track (1977-1989) - After removing the artificial turf, an oval track for stock car racing (1991-1999, when the stadium was demolished) Since 2007, it's been the home of a soccer specific stadium (BMO field), though it was modified in 2016 to support Canadian football by removing some of the stands.

I saw several Jays games there, terrible stadium but we had lots of fun. Caught a ball there one night or rather chased it down. I think it was George Bell who hit a long foul ball that hit a puddle just before the foul pole down the 1st base line and it skidded up into the bleachers and rolled WAY down way out past where people would watch and I ran after it. Also saw the Toronto Blizzard a few times there, most memorable was against Benfica in a summertime friendly.
