Great job on the video. Longtime viewer, first time commenter. Live two hours northwest of Birmingham. Most of these venues were renovated and used in the World Games two years ago and really impressed the US Olympic Committee and the IOC. It wouldn’t shock me that Birmingham is eventually used as a Trials site or goes for an Olympic bid in the future. Legacy Arena was originally built as the BJCC in the late ‘70s for the Birmingham Bulls, a WHA team that missed the cut in the NHL merger despite doing decently at the box office. If a solid ownership group could form, the city could finally get the NHL team the place was originally intended to house. That place looks like it could do a better job right now of hosting the Coyotes than the Delta Center can. Legion Field is too important to the city and Alabama’s history to tear down but too dilapidated to use on a regular basis. It wouldn’t shock me that the city tears the majority or all of it down after the Magic City Classic contract expires and use the bones of the place for the Legion if they get an MLS bid or let the high schools in the area use it. You did forget one stadium (if you could call it a stadium; it has no permanent seats). Barber Motorsports Park is the home of the Indy race that happens next week and is a hidden gem in the world of motor racing. Highly recommend going there to visit the track and motorcycle museum on the grounds, plus there’s a Buc-ee’s right outside the track.

Legion Field hosted several soccer matches during the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. That includes a game in which the US team scored 29 seconds into the match against Argentina (before going on to lose 3-1 but that is neither here nor there.)

Birmingham is nowhere near close to being able to host the Olympics, it doesn't have the infrastructure and money to do it. The World Games is tiny compared to the Olympics.
@tybrown6934
@tybrown6934 5 ай бұрын
@@richardstephens5570 I didn’t know that the city lost that much and owes that much on the World Games. I also know Birmingham will never get anything close to the Olympics in mine or anyone’s lifetime. You would have to sink at least $10 billion into improving everything from housing to stadiums to road and infrastructure projects. That’s money that the city, county and the state of Alabama simply doesn’t have and Birmingham barely has enough money to keep the city going, much less sink into an event like the Olympics. The city needs to focus on getting a major sports team first before they lose out altogether. An NHL team would do extremely well in Birmingham if marketed and given a chance to survive and Messi would sell out Protective while Legion Field is torn down and rebuilt as a full time NFL or MLS stadium instead of being used maybe once a year for the Magic City Classic or a handful of high school games and being left to rot.
@jaygremillion

@@tybrown6934 There is little to no chance of any professional team of any meaning ever finding a home in Birmingham. An NHL team? Not a chance. The Thrashers couldn't last in Atlanta and that is with a population a "little" larger than that of Birmingham. The Legion do ok but nothing more than that. The Squadron...I don't even know if anybody goes to their games. Birmingham will NOT have a major professional sports team here anytime soon.

Questionable if the sort of wholesale plunder the public giveaways necessary to bribe a pro major league sport to come to your city could happen in Birmingham, or if it could out compete whatever city they would poach it from in providing a fan base, the local population are college football fans, college basketball fans, and even college baseball with the SEC tournament usually held at the Met. They might watch NFL but they aren't going to sell out pro stadiums

I've attended a couple of football games at Protective Stadium and I completely agree that it is a beautify facility. Now, that said, I'll offer the same criticism of city planners of this project that I did for Regions Field and for the Civic Center remodel: NOT ENOUGH PARKING! There is no parking deck for Protective specifically. There is one shared with the Civic Center (too small) and there might be one at the former Social Security building three or so blocks away. But there is an open area about 2/3 the size of a city block right by Protective that just begs for an eight to ten story parking deck. Instead, they left it an open area, though paved- essentially a parking lot of one level. For one of the Stallions games, my wife and I had to park on the street and walk about six blocks to the venue. There used to be quite a bit of parking directly under Interstate 20/59, but the city decided to turn that area into a "greenway", getting rid of that parking. Regions draws far smaller crowds of course but parking is no better there. In fact, because many of the businesses in the area will block their parking lots even though they are closed, parking might be even worse for Regions than it is for Protective.

Mobile you'll have Ladd-Peebles, the Mobile Civic Center, the Mitchell Center, Hancock Whitney, Stanky Field, and Hank Aaron Stadium. Two of those venues don't have a regular tenant and Ladd-Peebles is about to be that way, although they may hold onto Williamson since the school is literally across the street. Montgomery would be even shorter since it basically would just be Alabama State's facilities, the Cramton Bowl, and the stadium where the Biscuits play. Huntsville might actually have more of not depending on how big the gyms are at UAH and Alabama A&M, but he'd at least want to rope in Madison to pick up the baseball team that used to be the Mobile BayBears. I do see lot of opportunities for jokes between those three markets, though.

As a season ticket holder for the Legion, you're spot on about the pitch conditions being the primary reason for Legion leaving PNC for Protective. It doesn't drain properly so water would puddle up whenever it rained, which Birmingham gets quite a lot of during the USL season, and most games the pitch would have sand spots and dead grass. The team would often have to cancel games due to how horrible the pitch would get. Despite many complaints from Legion's FO, UAB refused to properly maintain the pitch. Hell, the team actually offered to buy it from UAB so they could maintain it themselves but the university declined. Once the city offered the team to play in Protective, they cited UAB's failure to maintain the pitch as failure to uphold their end of their agreement and moved out. I will say that most Legion fans hate that they play in Protective now and are hoping the team is planning on getting their own soccer specific stadium in the future. The stadium is too big for the team and the game day experience is abysmal at the best of times no matter what sport is playing there.

While Birmingham, Alabama has never had a major pro sports team, I feel like an NFL team would have good fan support in the city, with Alabama being a hotbed for college football. Most NFL teams in college football hotbed are well supported (Saints, Falcons, Titans, both Ohio teams).
@Nonfiction79

Unfortunately, people in Birmingham don’t show up to support their local college team (UAB) and it costs less than 15 bucks to get into a game there. People aren’t going to pay NFL prices when they can sit at home and watch the Bama game for free.
@richardstephens5570

You would have to find owners and financial backers who would want to have a team in Birmingham, and that's not happening. On lists of cities that could get a new NFL franchise, Birmingham doesn't even crack the top ten. Not enough people would show up to support an NFL team in Birmingham, people in Alabama already spend their money on college football. And not to mention the cost it would be to build an NFL stadium(it cost 1.6 billion dollars in Atlanta seven years ago).

We have so many nice stadiums that literally nobody uses. Unfortunately, Birmingham will never have any major, large skill, professional teams because we are not viewed as a big enough television market for leagues like the NBA or the NFL to think that they can make money here.

It's less that and more that there isn't a billionaire here that's willing to buy a team and move one here. Salt Lake City's metro is only slightly bigger than Birmingham, but they have two professional teams now due to having a dedicated owner.
@gracielynn9623
@gracielynn9623 8 ай бұрын
@@UAShortround actually Salt Lake City has three. They have had an MLS team since 2005 and it’s one of the best supported in the entire league. They also have the Utah Jazz and now whatever the NHL team will be called. The main difference between Salt Lake City and Birmingham is that the fans actually show up and support teams there. They got these top-tier professional teams because they showed out and supported the minor-league teams that they had first. Salt Lake City has had a hockey team that has been below both the NHL and the AHL for a long time and they still bring 10,000-12,000 people per game to that. That shows that it works. They had basketball before the Utah Jazz as well. They also had soccer. Birmingham may bring 1000 people to our hockey team, maybe 5000 on a good day to our college basketball team, maybe 500 to our NBA league team, we can’t even bring close to 10,000 most of the time for a spring football team… They look at that and they’re like why would we bring anything nice there? it seems difficult for people to comprehend, but you don’t get nicer and better stuff. If you don’t show that you care with what you have first.

Like others in the comments I assumed that this would be the original Birmingham in the West Midlands. If, as hinted at towards the ed of this video, yo do do the English Birmingham there are going to be issues of what geographical area you actually include. You usually do the wider metropolitan areas, which is fine, but with Birmingham the wider metropolitan area includes several towns and cities that are definitely NOT Birmingham. St Andrews, Villa Park and Edgbaston would be fine, but places like Molineux, The Ricoh Arena and the Bescot Stadium might be more controversial if you suggest that they are in Birmingham.
