Nice to see the process and how small the steps are. Ideal training for endurance horses or when you want to travel long distances. :)

Awesome. Could you maybe elaborate a bit about automatic waterers? I am trying this approach with my mare. She knows 'touch' and then touches it and also drinks when i put some water in the bowl, but somehow, even when she is very thirsty, she isn't getting it..

What part do you feel like she’s struggling with? Maybe pushing down on the middle piece to get the water to come out? Or the sound?

A horse does not need training to drink water. So, you think a horse is so stupid that he can't figure out how to drink water. And that you are so superior that you have to come to the rescue of the stupid helpless horse. Really?!

Maybe you should have a little think of ,,why?" before jumping to conclusions? This trick can be usefull in many ways, pheraps people do endurance or long distance trail riding, where the access to water is limited and the horse must drink when its given. Or when your horse gets injured/is sick instead of forcing water down their throat with a syringe or, even worse, dropper have them drink on cue. Obviously noone thinks that the horse is incapable of drinking water, because otherwise it wouldn't have survived up to this point. And I'm guessing (!) that you wrote this comment ONLY, because she's a force free trainer. It's just a guess though, I might be wrong. Feel free to correct me.

There are times when horses are not sure if they should drink because of environment, conflict, and other reasons. Putting drinking on cue is really more about providing the horse with information that it’s safe and good to drink right now. You’re not making them drink and they are not stupid. But they don’t always understand that there might not be another opportunity for a long while. We as humans have long plans for the day. We know that we are heading out on a 10 mile + trail ride and this will be the last water break for those 10 miles or whatever and so but establishing this way of communicating I can provide the horse with information that right now is a good time to drink. Horses do not create long term plans like that or have the awareness of what our plans are. Also, maybe horses during R+ training in the beginning are reluctant to take water breaks for fear the person may leave with the food or the opportunity for food may stop. This isn’t because of the person, but because of how many horses are fed and kept with limited access to restricted resources. So by teaching a horse that not only will food not be restricted if they take the time to drink, but the drinking will actually get more reinforcement, they become much more comfortable taking that break they need for water. Which is critical when training with food to avoid choke. And then finally there are in fact horses that do not drink enough during cold months, extreme heat, when the water tastes funny, etc. dehydration is a major cause for colic and other medical conditions. Training a horse to drink on cue can in fact be a life saving behavior, or if nothing else a major medical expense saving behavior!
