This is the first time I heard Wei Choon breaking into tears. That's the raw vulnerability that we rarely see, and we should respect that.

You are such a wonderful parent. I really teared up when you said doing your best is good enough. And spending time with your children growing up. It's amazing to see how emotionally mature your parenting is. Your children are so lucky to have you.

Hearing Christopher describe his childhood bring back memories. Our monthly treat was egg porridge or a visit to Swee Kee for a bowl of kway Teow every 2 to 3 months. Daily meal are mainly plain porridge with black soya sauce or preserved vegetables. Children today doesn't know how lucky they are.

Thank you for this podcast - it's amazing and totally heartfelt. I can totally relate to Wei Choon about how he feels about his dad. My dad was also super pro-China in his ideals and would sing the chinese national anthem any chance he gets. For sure he has his flaws but man, the older I get, the more I appreciate what he had done to raise me up.

Our parents, the baby-boomer generation had such big dreams, and yet so much acceptance in their current financial status then (granted the outlook of the economy was super different back in the 80s and 90s). But their views on the value of money has very much remained. Fast forward to 2023, our generation, people who don't do wealth-signalling are considered to be the odd ones. Humility is almost non-existent and not celebrated enough. What a world we live in. This is an amazing episode btw - great guest and little exchange of "i love yous" haha!

the ironic thing about Financial Advisory is that the people who need it the most (i.e. in debt or in bad financial situation) are the ones that can't afford to pay for good financial advice. It creates a bigger and bigger divide between the poor and the rich. But also I'm not really sure how to solve this issue.

The issue with commission based agents are that they only sell products that they only selling and not motivated to provide/sell you other financial products or advice (e.g. I have never heard from commisionned agent that promotes CPF planning before). An analogy is a Toyota salesman will never sell you a Honda car even if it is actually more economical for your lifestyle. If commissioned agents say that they are financial advisors, i will not listened to their advice 100%. A normal consumer who is not very financial literate will miss out on other potential products/opportunities and this is the opportunity cost.

Awesome ethic here. All PROPERTY AGENTS need to be paid this way as they are in conflict of interest with society at large when they are paid by a percentage commission. They diminish people's ability to afford the basic necessity of a roof over their head just so that they can earn higher comms. Forever hyping the market and pushing higher prices because it is in their interest to do so. Even the conveyancing lawyers who shoulder actual liability are paid by a fee for their services instead of percentage of property value!
