WHY IS Stouffer's Fish Filet So Bad?

This is hands down my favorite Stouffers frozen meal, I usually have it once a week. I prefer the microwave, it's faster and pretty much turns out the same as in the oven besides the mac & cheese doesn't get a little encrusted. When I'm extra hungry I'll put the filet between two slices of buttered white bread, love it.

I've noticed a change in a lot of Stouffers dinners. I think it's budget cuts. For example I dont eat the turkey tetrazzini anymore because the turkey is now rubbery and the taste is different.

They screwed up their french bread pizzas recently too. Now 50% more cheese! But it's that weird plastic cheese that never seems to melt completely. Those used to be my go to for frozen pizzas, not so much now...shame.

@@tgatt5759 They'll still do in a pinch I suppose, and maybe it's even the same cheese they've always used, but the fact that there's more of it makes it a little off putting, which makes them disappointing from what you're used to.

@@MrStkrdknmibalz9799 If you can splurge a bit, Signature Select or Sam's Choice (I forget which, its a walmart brand) brand Bacon Cheddar Ranch stuffed crust pizza is good. The sauce is savory, the cheese is pleasantly melty, the chicken and bacon are a bit more sparse these days but the stuffed crust balances it out. For $7 or $8, its a fully serviceable pizza that satisfies; you can feed 3 or 4 people comfortably with two slices each.. The crust/dough used to be thinner but again, not really an issue.

The fish in question is Pollock (also called White fish or Hake). It has little flavor, which is why most of it ends up as Surimi. Not going to detail how that is made, it would take too long. We almost never eat this fish as is here in Alaska. When you can have fresh Salmon, Halibut or Cod, why settle for less? My sympathies!

I fish Pollock in the UK and I find it just as tasty as Cod, it is easier to overcook when prepared improperly sure but it's a beautiful fish when cooked right and just as nutritious. Your privileged to have the selection you have in Alaska of course but don't dismiss Pollock, it's a very important fish for the sustainability of the species you mention. Probably wouldn't be many Cod left without it.

I had this meal for supper tonight. I added cheese and tartar sauce and put it on a bun - like a McDonalds fish sandwich. Pretty good.

Good, cheap dinner for 2-3 people: large Stouffer's macaroni and cheese, and while it cooks in the microwave, cut up and brown your favorite polish or smoked sausage in a skillet (I like Eckrich) and mix the crispy sausage slices with the macaroni when it's done. Always good, and filling!

I’d say the biggest difference between a normal oven and a convection oven is that a convection oven/air frier is that there’s a lot of air movement, and more drier and hotter air can get to the food, which creates a better environment for perfect crispification! The easiest way to achieve the best results in a normal oven is to put food on a mesh rack, since it allows air to circulate around food and it almost can mimic a convection oven perfectly.

Really appreciate the air fryer instructions. Yes, I know you can find them online, but they can be all over the place. My rule of thumb is to set the air fryer at same or close to the same oven temp and half the cooking. time. Ive had varying degrees of success with method, and then nail it down through trail and error.

The last breaded fish I bought was so tough it was horrible and went into the trash. I "treat" myself to salmon or tuna from Aldi or Walmart once every one or two weeks. At $10 or so a pound, it is not cheap, but it is a delight to eat. I found a good recipe for a sauce. Sour cream, mayo, salt, pepper, a tad bit of sugar, a tad bit of lemon, dill weed. It is very good. Otherwise it's chicken or ground beef for supper.

Larry, I've never been a fan of microwave fish of any swort. Stouffers usually makes decent products, and their Mac and cheese is one of their best. What shocked me more than anything in your video was the cost. I can't believe the container of 9 ounces of macaroni and nasty pollock filet was over $5.! But thanks for the videos.

Stouffer's meals have steadily gone downhill for quite some time. I still like the baked apples and spinach souffle but the others are just not good. Even the stuffed peppers are not what they used to be, although the red sauce on them is still spot on good. Oh, well.

About ten years ago these were really good. At some point though the mac and cheese part changed in flavor, (just like the Stouffers Mac & Cheese did, which figures), and the fish became lower quality. Now you will get a lot of silver skin or blood veins or whatever it's called in the fillets.

Gosh! The breading has the most ingredients. My thoughts on this meal are, I'd slap the mac and cheese on one piece of bread, top it with the fish, top that with canned fried onions (or sour cream/green onion potato chips), spread some tartar sauce on another piece of bread, put it on top of the whole mess and make a fish sandwich. Nine ounces of food is NOT enough to make a meal, at least not for me. PS I had a Deni counter top hot air oven that I loved. If these new air fryers work as well as my old Deni, I want one!

I used to buy this Stouffer's frozen fish meal regularly but I started getting a lot of them with dark meat inside which turned me off. Now I just cook fish I buy from the fish market or frozen and thawed from the supermarket.

Here in the UK, we've always had Haddock or Cod in our 'fish and chip' shops. But some have been rumbled for substituting Cod and Haddock for the much cheaper Pollock but not passing on the savings for the cheaper fish. Bit of a national scandal here in the UK.
